I rather suspect it's now boost::unique_lock< boost::recursive_mutex > Where unique_lock provides RAII scoped-lock "front end" semantics and recursive_mutex provides the "back end" for the lock. http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/doc/html/thread/synchronization.html
