Optional in 1.35 seems to work okay for me with xlC version 8.0. Here's the code I tested.

So it doesn't appear that any macros or compile options need to be set for this to compile.

Thank you for mentioning the version. It appears that our xlC was by default 7.0, but we have 8.0 as well and it worked perfectly as you said.
