[shared_ptr] Optimization suggestion

Hi All, For my own work in the thread-safe smart pointer arena, I have used a technique to reduce the number of mutex objects from one per object, yet minimize induced contention. The basic idea is a static pool of mutexes indexed by hashed pointers. Or in pseudo code: mutex & get_object_mutex (const void * p) // see below { const size_t pool_size = 127; static mutex pool[mutex_pool_size]; unsigned long ul = reinterpret_cast<unsigned long>(p); unsigned long hash = ...; // munge ul in some clever way return pool[ hash % pool_size ]; } class foo { public: void bar () { #ifdef BOOST_HAS_THREADS mutex::scoped_lock guard(get_object_mutex(this)); #endif // ... do something ... } }; This is a tad simplified. For example, I used my Singleton template to manage the pool, but the idea is the same. Instead of allocating one mutex per object that might need one, allocate a pool of them and hash the object's pointer so that all references to the same object use the same mutex. Has anyone considered using this technique in shared_count? The extra contention could be controlled by the sizeof the pool, and it would be a big savings where lots of objects are used. It would also be better than the lightweight_mutex used on some platforms (such as Windows) to achieve similar savings. singleton allocators

In my code, I use the term allocator for policies that mirror the Loki singleton creator policies. For example, my dynamic_allocator class maps almost directly to Alexandrescu's CreateUsingNew policy. It has been suggested that allocator is a misleading term, because users will think that such classes were meant to work with the allocator policy used in the standard containers. Is the term allocator really that misleading? Should I make the massive change in my code to refer to these classes as creators? -Jason

I've also run some speed comparisons between auto_ptr and AutoPtr and (on Windows at least) they appear to be virtually the same speed when doing the same operations. [filesystem] Major changes before standardization

I'm currently working on a major revision of the Boost filesystem library aimed at getting it ready to be proposed to the C++ committee for the next Library TR. The critical technical change required is internationalization. The plan is to provide a templated basic_path class, with typedefs for path and wpath. In other words, an approach very similar to the current std::basic_string, std::string, and std::wstring. Doing this adds a certain amount of complexity compared to the current path class. For example, a path_traits class has to be introduced to give basic_paths on user defined types a way to import the conversions, delimiters, and other traits. To offset the added complexity, I'd like to reduce some of the complexities in the current design: * Eliminate the distinction between native and generic grammars; either would be permitted in all contexts. As well as simplifying the class interface a bit, this will also eliminate a source of user confusion. * Move the name error checking from the basic_path class into stand alone functions. Although the current error checking could be further improved by Peter Dimov's suggested change allowing failure to be treated as either a warning or a hard error, moving it out of the class simplifies the interface, allows full path (rather than name-by-name) error checks, and eases internationalization. The primary downside of these changes will be that users who want path portability checks will have to code calls to checking functions that are currently being called automatically. The internationalization of the library is a big enough change that we will probably want to have at least a mini-review once the changes are complete. Comments? --Beman

Strange gcc 3.2.2-5.8 behavior

The following bit of code gives me an undefined symbol (l1) when using gcc 3.2.2-5.8. Is there something wrong with the code or is there a bug in the compiler or a setting I don't know about, etc? struct S { static const short l1 = 10; }; void go(const short& l) {}; // causes undefined symbol l1 int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { go(S::l1); return 0; } If I do normal, non-in-class-initialization, the problem doesn't appear nor does it appear if I accept the short by value in go.
