Would it be possible to add: template<typename Application> struct unpack_apply { ... }; such that: is_same < unpack_apply<f<a0,a2,...,an> >::type , vector<a0,a2,...,an> > to mpl? Maybe a better name would be get_args, but since it's so closely related to unpack_args, I thought maybe unpack_apply could be considered OK.

Just for giggles, I pointed my unit test code to the boost I got from CVS. Interestingly enough, it compiled with the #include <boost/algorithm/string.hpp> (but it complained about the unit test code- I am guessing there is a broken form in cvs? I am using VC7.1 (and will also be using VC70 for this code) What I did- Executed the following from a cmd prompt: cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/boost login cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/boost checkout boost cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/boost logout went into boost\iostreams and boost\libs\iostreams- copied both into temp area- Deleted the CVS folders Copied the files into the boost 1.32 dir in my company's internal CVS server (we have the boost files under revision control to control which version of which file we are using to build) Initially I had to change the files to from namespace io to iostreams. Got through those compile errors. Resigning from Boost.Profiler

I am going to have to stop development of Boost.Profiler. IMO there is still a huge gap between where it is and where it would have to go to be both robust and simple enough to be appropriate for Boost. Honestly I don't see it happening without a more robust and portable high_resolution_timer, which requires far more time and energy than I am willing to commit. I have been talking to Christopher about this. He has been very helpful in my usage of this lib. I am currently integrating this lib and extending it to fit the purposes of a 1.7million line application. (so far have done initial integration). With Chris's resignation, I am picking up the torch with this library. I intend to continue development of the profiler (I need it for a production system) and also intend to eventually submit it to boost. I will continue working with it, and share changes on this list for peoples ideas and feedback. I will not attempt to formally submit it, until I have used it to great success for the problems I am working on in my production application. It additionally needs full support for other operating systems which will need to be taken into account. I do not have a web page at this point in time. I am looking at setting up a source forge project for continued development. serialization archive types: random_iarchive, pretty_oarchive

Hey all, Robert specifically -- I've got fascinated with all the uses for this serialize() method, and I'm kicking around ideas for a couple archive types. The use case is an "Event" that occurs in a neutrino detector. This event is very big, it contains containers of smart pointers to containers of maps of smart pointers to... you get the idea. 15k lines of just containers of data. First notion is a pretty_oarchive. Currently I have people implementing operator<<() which calls a member function virtual ToStream() (so reference-to-base works) for debugging/hacking purposes, and if everything has a serialize method anyway, it would be a big savings to forget the ToStream() stuff and say pretty_oarchive(cout) << my_class; where pretty_oarchive is something like xml_oarchive, but with the formatting somehow factored out and modified. I admit that other than the header and start/end tags I haven't looked at this too closely because I assumed it had been discussed, thought I'd check for showstoppers first. random_iarchive (written already): The other issue is that with such a large event, you'd want to be able to verify that it makes the round trip to/from the archive intact. Obviously boost::serialization has thorough test suites, but with people constantly tinkering around in these classes, I was hoping to get a test suite going that does exactly what we're doing. You'd like to be able to just Event written_e, read_e; binary_oarchive oa; binary_iarchive ia; random_iarchive ria; ria >> written_e; oa << written_e; // close, open as input ia >> read_e; assert(written_e == read_e); where random_iarchive sets fundamental types to random values, expands containers to some random length (random() % MAX_RANDOM_LENGTH), and creates a T when it sees shared_ptr<T>. I've written this already. Of course you have to write your operator==()'s so that they have value semantics, that is they compare what is on the ends of their component shared_ptrs, not whether these pointers point to the same object or not. The original idea was to set the serialize() method and the operator==() against one another for verification... but if people forget to modify both, there's no way to tell from the test suites, it seems. It kind of started as an experiment and now that it is written it looks like there's no way to keep users from shooting themselves in the foot like this. Another problem is that if a class contains vector<shared_ptr<Base> >, you'd like to be able to populate this with shared_ptr<Derived>, where Derived is randomly selected from the set of classes that inherit from Base. Since serialization requires these classes to be registered, it seemed to me there might be a way to do this. But maybe its all overkill. Anyhow, this random_iarchive exists (except for the Base/Derived thing, above), maybe it would make a good tutorial case for custom serialization archives, maybe people want to use it for something. I'd be more than glad to write up some tutorial material, I'm sure I'd get a lot out of it. As usual, thanks for your time and for a killer library... -t

[mpl] documentation bug (Fibonacci sequence)

In the MPL reference manual, in the vector_c section, an example is given: typedef vector_c<int,1,2,3,5,7,12,19,31> fibonacci; These values are not correct. I just got a message from Michel Decima regarding an interesting problem. What happens when you have to use a library which maintains static or global variables that you don't have control over, and you need your singletons to have access to them? The answer is that you have to make sure that your singletons get destroyed before or as main ends, not after. To do so, you have one of three options: A) Use the dependency_lifetime and make sure not to keep any static or global pointers. B) Explicitly call destroy on each of your singletons before main exits. C) Explicitly destroy the secret singleton boost::singleton::detail::longevity_registry before main exits. I recommend option three, combined with some RAII. For example: struct CleanupSingletons ( ) { ~ CleanupSingletons ( ) { boost::singleton::detail::longevity_registry::pointer ( ).destroy ( ); } }; int main ( ) { CleanupSingletons cleanup; //... return 0; } I wonder if this functionality is useful enough that I should add a non-member function 'cleanup' directly in the singleton namespace which destroys the longevity_registry internally. Iostreams questions

Several questions, 1) There is the (apparently) undocumented pipe operator http://www.ootl.org/boost/iostreams/pipable.hpp.htm . What does it do exactly? It appears to push filters into a filtering_stream or filtering_streambuf, but I am unsure. 2) Can we use it to write arbitrarily long chains such as: source | input_filter | bidirectional_filter | output_filter | sink? 3) why the name bidirectional_filter when inputoutput_filter (or io_filter) would be apparently more consistent with stl naming convention? 4) what is the url for the latest version and what is the status? Simple RPC mechanisms like this inevitably end up being extended piece by piece until you have reproduced most of the CORBA functionality. Select overload revisited

I was thinking about the overload resolution functions suggested a while back by Arturo Cuebas[1] and had no idea why the compiler needs to be told the number of parameters in the first place. So I took his code and removed the numbers from functions, and it worked (in gcc). I guess that it didn't work for him because of his compiler. Well, it almost worked. Sometimes there is more than the one function that fits the template parameters. So I kept the numbered overloads to be able to match them. It might be possible to get these to work without the number of parameters by making the compiler prefer overloads for functions with less parameters. I've attached a demo. Hi all, i am building build libraries for version 1_32_0 on solaris 9 but running into many errors. For example, there are similar errors like in compiling serialization/build/../src/xml_wgrammar.cpp:14: #error "wide char i/o not supported on this platform" The command i used is: bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" --with-python-root=/usr/local/Python2.3.2 install Are there any detailed procedures for build on solaris 9? Hi, I've been looking through the boost library and I haven't been able to find anything that works like typeid() that returns the exact (i.e. derived) class name instead of just the base class. I want to compare two derived classes to make sure that they are of the same class, but typeid() only returns the name of the base class. [mpl] sequence details

Hi, What is the best way to convert the result of a mutating mpl intrinsic metafunction (such as 'mpl::push_back', for example) to numbered form ('vectorN<a1,a2,..>') ? I tried using the type-member (which only works on some compilers - not with GCC for example) and figure 'copy' could probably do the trick (but is a quite complex operation) so there might be a better recipe for this. In a library I'm currently working on, I use a decorator pattern to make a class model of a sequence it holds (i.e. give it a tag type member and specialize *_impl with delegate semantics). After applying the delegate metafunction I need the sequence in a form I can match with partial specialization. Thanks for your help, Tobias

[numeric/conversion] doc's example not up-to-date

Is the documentation for numeric/conversion finalized yet ? It seems that at least the code sample in numeric/conversion/doc/numeric_cast.html hasn't been kept up-to-date. This sample 1/ includes inexistent header 2/ uses boost::bad_numeric_cast instead of boost::numeric::bad_numeric_conversion and same for the other exception classes and most of all : 3/ // This works, because unsigned integral types cannot cause overflow. unsigned char c=numeric_cast<unsigned char>(l); But this line does raise an overflow exception (as it should, I guess). I guess the comment was about unsigned types implementing modulo-arithmetics, but in the end does numeric_cast check for unsigned overflows, or not ?? -- Samuel

It mostly fixes several typos found in documentation and comments, and also solves some formatting issues in the jam build files (incorrect indentation and very long lines in help messages). Are you running it in VC in debug mode? (you have to do Debug-Start from the IDE- then View Menu- Other Windows- Output- you might have to scroll it) Too bad we don't have a boost.socket, because it would be fairly reasonable to take and make a sink for debug out, on windows it would use OutputDebugString- or on windows \ unix\ it could spit debug info to a socket). If we had a Socket library, all the rest of the pieces are there... I am going farther down the profiling path, (and Christopher Diggins has been INCREDIABLY helpful there). But as I think about it- boost isn't really that far off from having a profiler\debugger\logger. I think the iostreams lib would be an excellent thing to build that on top of... Anyways, just mindless meandering.. Hi, using multi_index_container I've got strange errors. Simple source code leaned on official examples doesn't compile. Hardly modified code that seems to be equivalent does compile however. In working with the code below, I just moved it to VC70. The iostreams docs point me to not officially supporting vc71, but they do say some of the support has been left in. While trying to compile below, I got caught up with a static assert, I noticed the #ifndef BOOST_IOSTREAMS_NO_FULL_SMART_ADAPTER_SUPPORT Was around the static assert. So being a gambling sorta guy, I #defined BOOST_IOSTREAMS_NO_FULL_SMART_ADAPTER_SUPPORT and that got rid of that static assert. I am now having issues with detail::resolve_traits // Deduces the return type of resolve. template<typename Mode, typename Ch, typename T> struct resolve_traits { BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT(!is_const<T>::value); I have been digging through trying to figure this one out. I have not yet. My Question- is there a workaround that allows for minimal \ limited useage of iostreams with VC70. (I have a project I am working on code for that is STUCK on that compiler)..
