I am trying to get Wave working because I have a theory it could be useful to me for an instrument tool I envision adding to the proposed profiler. I am traveling today, but over the weekend, I am going to play with this some more. I am thinking about rebuilding a separate machine, and starting over from scratch (just to remove any weirdness in config I have on my main laptop).

[filesystem] WIN32 Can not use drive name in directory

Hello, >From my application there may come a time when I want to take a directory or file name from a user. In windows, there is a file selection box that can return the full path of a file that the user chooses. The full path in windows includes the drive name with a colon and then a backslash ( c:\ ). I can not seem to get the boost filesystem library to accept this as a valid path even with the native checker. I also ran the test provided with boost for paths and it failed. The output is given below. $ bfs Platform is Windows initial_path().string() is "g:/boostfs" initial_path().native_file_string() is "g:\boostfs" d:/srcbuilds/boost_1_32_0/boost/test/minimal.hpp(129): exception "std::exception : boost::filesystem::path: invalid name "c:" in path: "c:/"" caught in function: 'int main(int, char**)' **** Testing aborted. **** 1 error detected It appears that the colon is in the list of invalid characters for a file and it is throwing things off. My version of Boost was compiled with MinGW under Windows XP SP2 using the command line bjam "-sTOOLS=mingw" stage If I am missing something please let me know. Thank you for your time, - Dave

[Windows MSI Installer] - Using WIX

Hi, I am in the process of looking at how feasible it would be to use WIX to create an MSI installer package for Boost for the Windows Platform(s). Now bearing in mind that I have never used WIX before and have been out of the programming game for a while I think I would like to help/run with this task. >From lurking on the list for a while and also from the more recent "Customer Friendlier Boost Installation" thread here is a feature/wish list of items that I have seen or would personally like: * Install boost using an installer application * Detect necessary installation information * Provide "header only install" or header and lib file install" * Install foo library and dependencies and that is it * Configure various IDE's to support using boost * Install and register an MSDN Library of the boost documentation Obviously this list has some items on it that may not even be possible but hey we need something to aim for. Also the main goal would be to develop an automated rather then hand-rolic process for creating this MSI file. To help reach this goal I am hoping someone with more experience with the boost development process could shed some light on these questions. 1. Can we write a program that could work out if a library is header only? (generating a list of all these files) 2. Can we write a program that could work out if a library needs to be compiled as a lib file? (generating a list of all these files) 3. Can we write a program that could work out the dependencies between different libraries? (generating a list of all the dependencies) 4. Is there a number of files that you would consider to be core boost files (ie something that the majority of boost libraries/users would use)? Or if we cannot write a program to work it out how feasible would it be to have library maintainers maintain another file (for each library) containing this information? *ducks for cover* Seriously this file could be used for any platform to help with creating any form of installation package (RPMS, Debian Packages, whatever Darwin uses, ...) In effect if we could some how generate these files. We can then write a script that would create an XML file that the WIX application can convert into a useable MSI installation package automatically with virtually no user interaction (just need WIX and maybe the Windows Installer SDK installed). The discussion about Boost.Build is valuable by itself, but OTOH, (why) do I need the Boost.Build to use the Boost.Book? Isn't Boost.Build just a way to run something that otherwise can be run from the command line? Regards, Arkadiy

Hmm... The only fix for this I can come up with is to add "<define>BOOST_LWM_USE_SPINLOCK", or probably more safely add "<linkflags>-pthread" to the BUILD. The current code, what's going to be 1.33, is rather different and is likely not to rely on pthreads on your platform. I think it uses native assembly in the GCC+PPC case. But more generally I would think that it should not generate *any* locking code when doing a single threaded build. The docs for function_traits.. http://www.boost.org/libs/type_traits/index.html#function_traits Don't mention if the traits work just for function types. Or if they will also work with function objects.
