The review of Andy Little's Physical Quantities System begins today, May 31, 2006, and continues through June 9, 2006. Download: pqs_3_1_0 is the Official Boost Review version of pqs. (Please note that pqs_3_1_0 has a bug in one header. This can be either patched according to the latest release notes, "relnotes.txt" available from http://tinyurl.com/7m5l8 or alternatively download pqs_3_1_1, which is basically equivalent to pqs_3_1_0, except the bug has been fixed there. Description PQS (Physical Quantities System) is designed to replace the use of floating point types for modelling physical quantities in C++ programs. Advantages include automated dimensional analysis checking, automatic unit conversions, self documentation of code and uniform mechanisms for dealing with physical quantities overall, allowing better interoperability, accuracy and repeatability among engineering, physics and trade applications. The library will ultimately consist of various types for modelling quantities in different situations. The t1_quantity, which is the first to be implemented, performs all its dimensional analysis checks as well as parts of its unit conversion calculations, at compile time rather than runtime, for maximum efficiency. PQS is designed with a firm commitment to the SI system, as being the internationally agreed preferred system of units. A reasonable selection of common quantities and units is included in the review version for demonstration purposes. The intent is to expand on this to include all the common quantities mentioned in Appendix B.8 and B.9 of the NIST SI document: http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/pdf/sp811.pdf The library also defines a selection of physical constants again intended as a flavour of the constants that would be included in a full library implementation as outlined in: http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/pdf/chart1.pdf Review questions: Please always explicitly state in your review, whether you think the library should be accepted into Boost. Endian library - request for comments

I've dusted off some old code from Darin Adler, gotten his permission to use the new Boost license, and have put together a library. Infinite precision integer draft

If you don't mind I start a new thread here. The unsigned infinite precision integer is different from the base type unsigned int, which is actually a modular integer with modulus 2^n. Therefore two integer derived classes are needed: unsigned_integer and modular_integer. The unsigned_integer is an infinite precision integer which can only be positive or zero. The negate() of a non-zero unsigned_integer will always throw an exception. A subtraction which results in a negative value will do the same; therefore in my opinion there is no fundamental problem with this, as negation is subtraction from zero. The modular_integer has a static method static void set_modulus( const integer & ). When the modulus is not set, it is zero, in that case the modular_integer is identical to integer. Users that like an unsigned integer with a negate() that always works, will have to use a modular_integer and set its modulus to a positive value. In the document I will specify unsigned_integer and modular_integer, and thus implementations can provide them. Regards, Maarten.

The Filesystem proposal accepted by the C++ committee's LWG for TR2 includes components for reporting system errors from library functions that depend on operating system API's. There are error_code and system_error classes, four free functions, etc. They will go in a TR2 header named <system_error>. Presumably for Boost it will be called <boost/system_error.hpp> or similar. See http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2006/n1975.html#Diagnost… Boost.Filesystem is the first Boost library to use <boost/system_error.hpp>. Chris Kohlhoff is planning to use it in asio, and has suggested improvements that I'll incorporate. Presumably the header will be used by other Boost libraries in the future. What should the roadmap be for moving this header into Boost? Should it be a separate library? Seems smallish for that. Does it need a formal review? A mini-review? Is it OK if I put in CVS now in boost/detail? Opinions? --Beman
