Bug/Incompatibility: Visual C++ 2005 checked iterators lead to major crashes

Hi, Currently with Boost 1.33.1 and Visual C++ 2005, the libraries are compiled with the default _SECURE_SCL=1 value, which means Boost *.lib and *.dll files are compiled with checked iterator enabled. When an application using Boost is compiled with _SECURE_SCL=1 too, everything is fine. However, all hell breaks loose when the application is compiled with _SECURE_SCL=0 (which is the case of our projects). The problem arises because apparently the iterator implementation and structure is different. Therefore any call to Boost *.lib or *.dll functions with an iterator passed as an argument will result in a weird and unexplained crash (I first got the problem when using Boost.Signals). Because Visual C++ 2005 checked iterators are not Standard C++ compliant, I think that it ought to be possible to disable them when compiling Boost (e.g. using an additional bjam variable in the vc-8_0 toolset?). I sincerely think that not having this option is a serious bug, as it makes Boost useless for anyone using VC2005 and having performance constraints. In the meantime, can anyone tell me how it's possible to globally define _SECURE_SCL=0 when compiling Boost 1.33.1? I tried modifying boost\config\compiler\visualc.hpp, but apparently some Windows/VisualC headers are already included before it (causing a double definition of _SECURE_SCL). Regards, Tanguy

BitSet and Integers

is there a way to turn a regular (unsigned long) integer into bitset? for example, unsigned long int a=1234567890; boost::dynamic_bitset<> b(32); can I do something similar to boost::dynamic_bitset<> b(32, a); or b |= a; without resorting to xxxUL etc? at the moment I am doing for( int i=0 ; i< 32 ; i++ ) if( (a & (1UL << i) ) ) b.set(i); Thanks

You can also do this: throw failed<read_error>() << wrap_errno(); Here, wrap_errno is a function that captures the current errno value, and returns it as an object of some type, which is then stored in the info sub-object of the exception being thrown. Of course, you can attach more stuff directly in the throw-expression, by following with more calls to operator<<. I would be interessted in your library. regards, Oliver

Half a dozen of members in path.hpp use complex "basic_path<String, Traits>::string_type::value_type" as function parameter type: template< class String, class Traits > inline bool operator==( const typename basic_path<String, Traits>::string_type::value_type * lhs, //<<== uses string_type const basic_path<String, Traits> & rhs ) The basic_path has typedef "value_type", defined as string_type::value_type, so it should be possible to replace the function signature with shorter: template< class String, class Traits > inline bool operator==( const typename basic_path<String, Traits>::value_type * lhs, // <<== no string_type const basic_path<String, Traits> & rhs ) Incidentally, this works around a bug in Digital Mars 8.49.1 compiler (which fails to deal with the "string_type"). /Pavel

[pqs] discussion is huge! - wiki

Hello all, I'm sure that everyone involved in pqs discussion is quickly running out of time to spend on the mailing list. My point here is to start doing something while the idea is hot. That something IMHO is a wiki with specifications of those libraries (when decided to decouple dimensions, units and linear algebra (not geometry!)). Then everyone will be able to write valuable ideas that will NOT be buried under continuous flow of new posts to the mailing list. So finally a concise specification may emerge. so, how to start a wiki? :) -- Janek Kozicki |
