Hello! I don't understand why the Adobe team is contributing an image library? I see that you have in the ASL something like Unicode String classes? Sorry if this is not right but that is what I see. I think it would be best to contribute such a Unicode lib to boost. Because Unicode is a much more issue <ende?lp=ende&p=/gQPU.&search=issue> in the C++ world. Best regards Amin

GIL - is there interest for an image library in Boost?

Hello, We have developed the Generic Image Library (GIL) - a library that abstracts away the image representation from algorithms written for images. It allows for writing the algorithm once and having it work for images in any color space, channel depth and pixel organization with performance comparable to writing the code for each specific image format. GIL is currently part of the Adobe Open Source Libraries and we use it for several imaging projects inside Adobe. Its only dependency is boost. You can find the sources and documentation at GIL's home page: http://opensource.adobe.com/gil Is there an interest for having GIL be a boost library? Your hint lead to a solution that works for: bjam --v2 install msvc-7.1 link=static,shared The Wave/FileSystem issue is solved by adding 'r' when rtti=on. The DateTime issue is a more global one relating to building link=static and link=share at the same time. The msvc compiler produces a LIB file in both these cases (static produces a STATIC_LIB target and share produces an IMPORT_LIB target). These targets clash, hence the error. The solution I have gone for is to add "-imp" for IMPORT_LIB targets. Therefore, link=static will produce: boost_date_time-***.lib and link=share will produce: boost_date_time-***-imp.lib boost_date_time-***.dll This causes the above install to work. I haven't done extensive testing, just the above. If this is approved, I will commit it. Hi, I've given a lot of thought lately to Boost.Xml and how it could be implemented. In the typical lex/yacc-like scanner/parser separation, XML requires a very complicated scanner: if the parser is supposed to be streaming, the scanner must replace all entity references by their replacement token stream. This is because they can appear almost anywhere, and are mostly not directly recognized by the XML grammar. Entity reference substitution is rather complicated, as are the rules affecting it. For example, pure token stream insertion by the scanner doesn't work: the scanner must keep track of whether an entity is allowed in a certain place (they may appear only /almost/ anywhere), which depends not only on the previous tokens, but for example whether the current context is that of an internal or an external DTD subset. In addition, the scanner should check several constraints of the replacement text, such as parentheses nesting in content expressions. The original idea was to implement Boost.Xml using Spirit with the existing XML grammar. I've given up on that. I believe it is not, with any reasonable effort, possible to implement a completely compliant XML parser with the merged scanner/parser-system that is natural to Spirit. The grammar would have to account for entity references in too many places, replacing character references at the scanner level would present problems with the characters representing <, > and &, and so on. So I'm wondering, does Spirit support in any way the separation of scanner and parser? Is it possible to write a Spirit grammar specification that acts on some token type instead of characters? There are currently some issues when running: bjam --v2 install msvc-7.1 # [1] and bjam --v2 install msvc-7.1 link=static,shared # [2] These were identified in the "[Boost-build] boost.build v2 and toolset=" discussion on the boost.build mailing list. Running [1] highlights a problem with Boost.Wave. Since wave adds <rtti>off for msvc-7.1, this is causing problems when it is pulling in Boost.FileSystem. The <tag> rule is using the <rtti>on version of filesystem, not the <rtti>off version, so BBv2 ends up trying to create two versions of boost_filesystem-vc71-mt-gd-1_35.lib. The workaround is to open the following files: $(BOOST_ROOT)/tools/wave/build/Jamfile.v2 $(BOOST_ROOT)/libs/wave/build/Jamfile.v2 and comment out the line: <toolset-msvc:version>7.1:<rtti>off # workaround for compiler bug in each, however this is not an ideal solution :(! Running [2] gives an error for boost_date_time-vc71-mt-gd-1_35.lib: error: Duplicate name of actual target: <pC:\install\lib>boost_date_time-vc71-mt-gd-1_35.lib ... error: added properties: <define>BOOST_DATE_TIME_STATIC_LINK <link>static error: removed properties: <define>BOOST_ALL_DYN_LINK=1 <link>shared This appears to be because the different <link> values aren't being interpreted independantly. Both of these appear to be problems that arise due to when <tag> is evaluated. Given: lib foo : bar.cpp : : <tag>foo.bar ; exe bar : foo.cpp : : <rtti>off ; the <tag> rule appears to be applied before <rtti>off updates the property set for foo. This results in the boost_filesystem problem (when inheriting the <rtti>off property from boost_wave) and I suspect (although I have not confirmed this) that it is the cause of the boost_date_time problem as well. As running bjam install is a common thing to do as a user, why isn't this a part of the regression tests?
