Hi, If I understand correctly, regression tests are now run using build 2. I would also like to use it, but I am getting an error (see below). Jamfile.v2 was created by Vladimir Prus some time ago, and apparently works fine for regressions. What's wrong with my setup? bbv2 bison/yacc windows unistd.h - Build Problems

I am trying to build the boost library from cvs HEAD, using bbv2. The problem platform is windows. (On linux everything works ok.) I've noticed that bbv2 uses more tools than bbv1 did. I.e. the bison/yacc within the graph library. So I installed bison, but during build, when the compiler tries to translate the file built by bison, it does not find unistd.h. This file is not available in the standard include path of the compiler used (msvc-7.1) but in a subdirectory of the bison path. How can I now tell bbv2 to use this directory? Sorry if my question sounds silly, but I am still rather new to bbv2. I guess I'd need to tweak site-config.jam? If yes what shall I put in there? Thank you for help. Roland

Interest in a flyweight library?

During some conversations with a colleague I came up with a very sketchy realization of what could be converted, if there is interest, in a flyweight library. Please see flyweight.hpp at Vault/Patterns: http://tinyurl.com/l6lt4 The so-called Flyweight Design Pattern, upon which this is inspired, is much too OO for current C++ tastes IMHO, what I'm proposing takes a more generic stance. A minimal use example follows showing the syntax: #include "flyweight.hpp" #include <string> #include <iostream> int main() { using boost::flyweight::flyweight; flyweight<std::string> str("hello world"); std::cout<<str<<"\n"; } Briefly put, a flyweight<T> is an object that can be used as a const T (i.e. flyweight<T> provides an operator const T&) but whose size is that of a pointer. The trick is that identical flyweight<T> objects share their representation globally, which drastically reduces memory usage when there are much more objects than different values. Additionally, comparison of flyweight objects can be made faster than that of the underlying type T, since we it reduces to pointer comparison --contrast that with what takes to compare the underlinyg type T when T=std::string, for instance. So, is there interest in having such a lib in Boost? Please note that the provided implementation is still a primitive one, but OTOH it does have all the advertised functionality, so one can use it to test it locally and form an opinion about its suitability: if somebody, for instance, can plug it into some scenario with massive quantities of elements, I'd appreciate knowing about resulting memory and performance improvements. Supressing warnings

I have raised this issue before, inconclusively, but the question has now become more urgent now that I am packaging some math functions produced by John "Doing the Impossible" Maddock. IMO Boost-worthy code should be able to be compiled in strict mode, for MSVC level 4, without producing a blizzard of warnings. Including a list of warnings that the authors of the library consider unhelpful, and in some cases, unfixable (specifically the warning "conditional expression is constant. ") by using, for example #ifdef _MSC_VER # pragma warning(disable: 4127) // conditional expression is constant. # pragma warning(disable: 4100) // unreferenced formal parameter. # pragma warning(disable: 4512) // assignment operator could not be generated. # pragma warning(disable: 4996) // 'std::char_traits<char>::copy' was declared deprecated. // needed ifndef _SCL_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE or == 0 // #define _SCL_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE = 1 // Avoid C4996 warning. // #define _SCL_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE = 0 // get C4996 warning. #endif is fine for that package, but also supresses these warnings for other code, which users rightly object to. It also doesn't help other platforms, except to list the ignorable warnings. Pushing and poping warning levels is VERY tedious, and almost impractiable, and doesn't help non-MSVC platforms. What is the best way to deal with this? Is it to provide for MSVC includable files, say math_strict.hpp, test_strict.hpp, filesystem_strict.hpp ... containing the above (tailored for the library, if necessary)? What about other platforms? A typical idiom in C is to initialize map data structure statically. For example: static struct name_age { const char* name; int age; } name_age_map[] = { {"Will", 50}, {"James", 32}, }; static const struct name_age* map_begin = ...; static const struct name_age* map_end = ...; void foo() { const struct name_age* na = lookup_by_name(map_begin, map_end, "James"); if (na != map_end) { /* process */ } } This is very convenient when one knows that the contents of the map will never change at runtime. However, writing the map data structures and lookup code gets old quick. I have not found an existing way nicely mirror this style in C++. I have being playing around with something similar in spirit to boost::array. Similar in that it can be initialized statically using an initialization list relying on a POD class for the implementation. So the above example would look something like: static static_map<const char*, int, 2> name_age_map = { "Will", 50, "James", 32, }; void foo() { static_map<const char*, int, 3>::iterator it = name_age_map.find("James"); if (it != name_age_map.end()) { // process } } Static_map::find would just be a simple linear search. However, there could be another type, say sorted_static_map, that relies on the keys in the initialization list to be sorted by the user. They make sense in other ways as well. For the scenario static_map is trying to solve you only want the map initialized once. I guess you could use boost.assign with a static object. Or you could right your own init code. For example: // namespace scope struct name_age_map { std::map<std::string, int> map; name_age_map() { this->map["Will"] = 28; this->map["Joe"] = 30; } }; static name_age_map my_map; // class scope class foo { static name_age_map my_map; }; name_age_map foo::my_map; // function scope void bar() { static name_age_map my_map; } I have three gripes about this solution: 1. The scaffolding code is a pain to write over and over 2. It is not thread safe 3. You may not want to pay the runtime initialization cost if the map is huge .
