Some interesting bits about iterator adaptors. Any context free grammar can be expressed as an iterator adaptor - or put a different way, a context free grammar satisfies the requirements of an iterator adaptor. Tokenizer is just one example of this - if the base iterator satisfies InputIterator it can be adapted as an InputIterator, if the base iterator satisfies ForwardIterator it can be adapted as a ForwardIterator (Bidirectional and RandomAccess will can also be adapted to Forward). Any InputIterator adaptor can also be adapted to an OutputIterator adaptor - hence any context free grammar can be expressed as either (you can tokenize on the way in or out). Consider expressing it as: token_iter = std::copy(tok.begin(), tok.end(), std::back_inserter (my_vector)); Now you can see that an additional check for end() on each step of the tokenizer is redundant. You might also consider writing a bounded algorithm: template<typename I // I models InputIterator typename O> // O models OutputIterator std::pair<I, O> copy_bounded(I in_first, I in_limit, O out_first, O out_limit) { while (in_first != in_limit && out_first != out_limit) { *out_first = *in_first; ++in_first; ++out_first; } return std::make_pair(in_first, out_first); } A collection of such bounded functions would be a nice contribution to boost (or ASL). You could also write a bounds checking iterator adaptor which throws on dereferencing end() [or incrementing past end()] - I would be careful with such an adaptor with standard algorithms - I'd have to survey the library to come up with a list but some algorithms are memory adaptive and not likely to be expecting a failure at these points. It should be safe though to bounds check output iterators as they could throw on assignment on the dereference which would be equivalent to throwing on dereference. Microsoft provides bounds checking iterators in their library which are intended to improve security (I very misguided notion but I won't comment further on that topic) - such iterators simply terminate if the bounds are violated - for their intended purpose this would be correct behavior. opinions on new clone_ptr semantics

There's previously been much discussion on the semantics of my proposed clone_ptr class. Taking the suggestions into mind, I've made changes to the class synopsis: http://www.peltkore.net/~alipha/clone_ptr.html I was curious if anyone had any addition input before I continue with the new design. The features that were brought up in discussion that I plan to include are: clone-on-copy A clone_ptr can't be null. A default-constructed clone_ptr<T, D> attempts to construct a D object for the clone_ptr to refer to. (where D defaults to T if the second argument is not specified) Stateful clone allocators Separate const and non-const versions of *, ->, and get function to access the stored object in either a const or non-const manner, depending upon the constness of the clone_ptr object. All these accessor functions don't throw. Since this is suppose to be an "object wrapper" and not a "clone pointer", the constructors and reset functions accept references not pointers, eg: clone_ptr<base> p((derived())); Which p then stores a clone of the derived object. Operator forwarding for the relational operators; clone_ptr<T>'s relational operators call T's relational operators. I declined to include an explicit clone function because I felt it would be confuse users into believing that the object is only cloned when the clone function is invoked and not cloned everytime the clone_ptr is copied. Furthermore, the clone function idea was a suggestion to get around problems involving clone-on-write, which I'm not implementing for now. Also, I'm still unsure of a name; clone_ptr is more recognizable but clone_obj is more accurate of a name. Kevin Spinar

Hello I've been writing a small program that expects certain number arguments from command line for any given option. <getopt.h> supports only single argument for each option, while I needed to supply three arguments, like that: ./program -f foo bar baz The easiest solution was to use Boost.Tokenizer library, which indeed is a very small and nify tool. However I was surprised to discover that Boost.Tokenizer is exception unaware! Consider following two examples. One with current version of Boost.Tokenizer, that is exception unaware.
