[Parameter] Regression test failures

The change applied to Trunk for Ticket #1535 has caused a bunch of regression test failures in the Parameter library, due to some missing preprocessor includes. I have opened Ticket #1541 for this, and attached a patch which allows the tests to pass on MSVC 7.1/8.0/9.0. Thanks, Richard Webb

[random] poisson_distribution problem and fix

The poisson_distribution code will fail for any mean larger than 750 or so (on my x86_64 machine). The problem is a comparison with exp(-_mean) which evaluates as zero right around there. The easiest fix is to operate with logs instead of exponents. I changed the operator() code to be something like this: RealType product = RealType(0); for(result_type m = 0; ; ++m) { product += log(eng()); if(product <= -_mean) return m; } This also makes it possible to get rid of the init() function and the _exp_mean private member variable. A far better fix would be to use an algorithm other than Knuth's for this. Knuth's algorithm is simple, but O(n). Here is some code I wrote, converting some old Fortran code that a friend had got from Numerical Recipes once upon a time. [integer] Implementing long long and others

As I understand the integer.hpp does not support types over 32 bits at present. I used this library in my work and I had to implement long long type. I suppose it is not too hard to implement other needed integer types (like _int64, _int128 on Microsoft and Intel compilers) using types from boost/cstdint.hpp file. But it requires slight redesign of library (integer.hpp) and it may requires to introduce a recursion (not too deep). I would like to implement this if it interests somebody. Also I think user may get understandable error reports through dummy types like struct too_much_bits_error; or struct negative_number_of_bits_error; with no body. Best regards. Igor Mikushkin

[fusion] variant adapter going away

Hi, I intend to remove the variant adapter from fusion. After thorough investigation, I think now that the move to make variant a fusion sequence is rather quirky. A variant will always have a size==1 regardless of the number of types it can contain and there's no way to know at compile time what it contains. Iterating over its types is simply wrong. status of trunk and merging in changes

I've made all the changes that I want to make for now on serialization_next_release. Now I want to merge these changes into the trunk and close the branch. a) Is this a good/appropriate time to do this? If not, when would be a good time. b) I've assumed that the best way to do the merge is just to do it the way its described in the SVN documention. I have both the trunk on my branch on my local machine and all changes are checked it so I should be able to just move to the branch and do a merge of all the changes on the branch. I've noticed some posts which describe a different procedure but its not clear to me that I can or should use a different one. Robert Ramey

[result_of?] New regression test failures on Trunk

The Trunk test results are showing that a number of new failures (e.g. xpressive/parameter/bimap) have appeared in the past couple of days. The failures appear to have occured as a result of the change to result_of.hpp for Ticket #1535 (at least, reverting result_of.hpp to the previous version allows the xpressive tests to pass on VC9). [dataflow] update: simple GUI dataflow editor added as an example

Hello, I am getting close to wrapping up version 0.9 of the Dataflow library (I think the 9 stands for how many times I've revamped the concepts :-)). The exciting new addition is that I have completed a simple GUI dataflow editor! Screenshot: http://tinyurl.com/3cblmo I have never been more excited about making an app that doubles a number :-) For this version, I want to iron things out a bit more (docs need a ton of work) before I package it up (current code is available in the sandbox and docs on website). When the ironing is done I will request review for the generic layer and Dataflow.Signals. Dataflow.Blueprint has a long way to go but I think it shows that the generic layer is useful. And the GUI shows that Dataflow.Blueprint is useful :-) The GUI is built with FLTK (quick and easy), but I hope to switch it to the new cppgui lib at some point. Best regards, Stjepan

Venerable 403 Forbidden Problem

Hello, I know this has been asked before, but I'm running into the "MKACTIVITY...403 Forbidden" error when I try to commit a file. A previous response to a similar query in this message list said that you need a developer account (which I'm pretty sure I have; I've created an account with SVNManager) not just a Trac account. Okay, assuming my developer account is hunky-dory, I guess the next step, according to http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/BoostSubversion, would be to invoke svn switch --relocate http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost https://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/ your-username/ --username Well, that would be great, but svn.exe isn't installed with Tortoise SVN, so if that's what I need to do I can't do it with just my TortoiseSVN installation. So... Is running svn switch what I really need to do? If so, do I have to download a separate installation of SVN? (That seems redundant, as TortoiseSVN appears to incorporate the functionality of SVN in one of its executables.) How can I commit my changes successfully and not get the Forbidden 403 message? I am very interested in the recently accepted Boost.Units library. I'm interested enough that I'd really like to read the documentation.... I have checked out the sources from the svn sandbox, but I can't seem to turn the units.qbk into something more readable. I tried the "obvious": run bjam in the docs directory, but that issues the complaint below. I added 'using boostbook;' to the user-config.jam in the top-level source directory, to no avail. I fear that I'm in a maze of twisty tools, all alike. a) is there an easy way to build the documentation or b) could some kind soul who has found their way through the maze of bbv2, boostbook, xsltproc, etc. do the rest of us a favor and put the html docs up on the web somewhere. $ bjam Building Boost.Regex with the optional Unicode/ICU support disabled. Hello Lubomir, Hailin and the other boosters, I implemented support for more png file types, including palette and grayscale with alpha images. For the implementation I had to add a gray_alpha layout, and extend the color_type metafunction for homogeneous bit_aligned_pixel_* types - packed_pixel is still missing. I tested 1,2 and 4 bit images with http://www.schaik.com/pngsuite/pngsuite_bas_png.html and some images with I also added additional calls to png_packswap to get proper results for 1bit images. Could you review the changes? A svn diff of boost/gil/ is attached to the email. I have a boost svn account, and could add that stuff myself, if you want me to. That's actually not possible without changing folks library code: it's a per-library decision which is the default, with the static library being recomended as the default unless there are reasons to choose otherwise. There's a great deal of documentation that would have to change to reflect this as well. There's also a rationale for why static linking is the default behaviour in our docs here: http://www.boost.org/more/separate_compilation.html#static_or_dynamic There's a further issue with building only one variant under MSVC: it doesn't work! By only building a release build, then the only thing that will work "straight out the box" is building a release build of your application against the dll runtime. Debug builds will generate linker errors (can't find the auto-linked library etc), as will builds against the static runtime, this means that Boost will appear totally broken if users try and build the default debug builds that their IDE gives them. We need to be *very* careful with this, or the complaints will be loud and vociferous! If the aim is to reduce the number of variants built, then I would suggest: Dymanic *and* static lib, as Release, multithreaded, dynamic runtime single build on Unix variants (2 build variants). Dynamic *and* static lib, Release *and* Debug, multithreaded, dynamic runtime on Win32 compilers (that's 4 build variants). That's an absolute minimum IMO. Even then we will have to be very careful that our build instructions indicate very clearly how to build the other variants, especially for those msvc users :-) Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news, John. PS this is too important and far reaching to be discussed only on boost-build IMO.

Getting "Factory functionality" out of the Lambda library does not deprecate the utility we are reviewing: Using Boost.Lambda just to create a single class instance seems sorta wasteful. Factory's greatest strength is its simplicity: We can easily make it compile (and optimize decently) even with legacy compilers and it's lightweight in terms of dependencies and template instantiations. old style streams support?

Hi, My DSP compiler comes with an ancient version of STL which only has old-style streams support (non templated streambuf etc.). It seems that in order to use some parts of boost that use streams, I would need to either modify boost to allow old style streams or use something like STLPort to get a more modern version of STL (My compiler vendor is unlikely to provide me with a more modern version). Using STLPort comes with its own porting issues - I have tried it briefly and it could probably be made to work but it would definitely require some modification. Is there any interest in supporting old-style streams in boost? Andrew

Hi, I've been continuing my quest to try and use Boost for my DSP and its C++ compiler. I've been looking at Boost.Thread and it seems that it relies on one of a fixed few threading libraries to exist. I have my own native implementation of mutexes etc. and it doesn't seem like there is any easy way to plug it in without editing a lot of the boost source. 'indexed' multi arrays?

In a recent project I've been working on, we had need for something that I'm calling (for lack of a better, more inspired name ;) an 'indexed' multi array. Essentially, we wanted something like a boost multi_array but that also allowed indexing along each dimension using some kind of indexing function. For example, along one dimension the indexing function may except a string as input and use a map to return an integer index, while along some other dimension the real line may be cut into non-overlapping intervals and a double value is looked up returning the index of the interval it belongs to. We looked at various solutions, but in the end rolled our own based off of the boost multi_array and a new concept of an 'indexer'. Is this something that anybody else would see as useful? Non-thread-safe thread library (Boost.Function)

Dear All, In November Sergey Skorniakov wrote to this list asking about the non-thread-safety of Boost.Function and consequently of Boost.Thread itself. Steven Watanbee replied pointing out that the problem is resolved in the trunk. See: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.devel/167877 My thought at the time was "chocolate teapot". I put understanding this issue on my to-do list and it has finally got to the top. However, looking at the trac pages that Steven linked to, I am none the wiser; they contain patches but with no comments in the code and don't mention thread safety in the commit messages. So can someone please help me understand the scope of this problem? i.e. - Are all uses of Boost.Function affected, or only certain uses (e.g. member functions vs. free functions)? - What exactly is the race between? E.g. if I know that I'll never create two threads at the same time, do I still need to worry about other uses of Boost.Function that may be concurrent? Is the race between creating the function objects or between using them, or both? - Can I avoid the problem by using a new version of Boost.Function, without upgrading other libraries? (Is Boost.Function header-only?) - What would the symptom of failure be? I'm currently debugging a double-free somewhere below std::string::assign, which is probably unrelated. I'm also curious to know how much more serious than this a bug would need to be before a Boost release would be recalled, or a new point-release released, or an announcement made on the Boost web page (which links to bugs fixed in 1.34.1, but not bugs introduced). Surely there aren't many users of Boost.Thread who are happy to use a non-thread-safe thread library..... Many thanks, Phil.

A recent thread in spirit.general NG suggested to me the need for a 'tagged variant' extension to boost::variant in order to emulate the tagged-union mentioned in this post in the thread: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.parsers.spirit.general/12611 A prototype of such an extension is available in variant_tagged.zip here: http://www.boost-consulting.com/vault/index.php?&directory=Data%20Structures Use of the variant_tagged could be used whenever non-string processing is required in a spirit parser. Each tag in the using corresponds to a token-id and each value associated with that token-id is the attribute for that token-id. This closely emulates the way yacc does it, IIRC, except it just uses a union and the tag is somehow "implicit". Is there any interest in using this in spirit or boost in general?

Hi, Is there any interest in my implementing support for a specific threading model? The library would expose an event manager (driven by an external thread or self-sufficient) with which modules register a callback to be called from any number of registered single-shot or periodic interval entries. A natural extension of the model is to include support for socket triggers. Another would be to provide a pool of such event managers. This code would leverage existing boost libraries such as thread, possibly function, etc. One example of use is with server frameworks wherein processing of several client connections can be handled by a single event manager. [asio] How many outstanding async_ operations allowed?

To my surprise I was not able to find anything in asio's documentation that would tell me 1) whether it is allowed to have more than one async_* operation waiting for completion and 2) how many such (if allowed at all) are permitted. Hi Guys, Is there a definitive guide in the Boost.Graph documentation about how to create custom selectors? I'm particularly interested in selectors that return STL types that use a different allocator parameter. How about a selector that chooses an STL vector using the Boost.Pool allocator, or a selector that chooses an STL set using the Boost.Pool Fast Allocator? I've gone through the BGL book (which is a bit dated, though still very much relevant) but I haven't seen a discussion about custom selectors. Pointers would be most appreciated. In particular, Visual C++ *still* does not ship with TR1 ("no plans until 2009" was the rumour I found), so anyone wanting to ship portable code is relying on Boost. My point is, I guess, that general-purpose one-size-fits-all libraries have historically been hard to use and slow; libraries that are easy to use and fast are not applicable to all uses. I personally think this issue is rather fundamental to the "computer linear algebra" problem, and nobody has yet come up with The Good Solution (not for lack of work). (BTW, I think that UBlas + template typedefs [in whatever form we get them] will grow up to be a big, strong, fast, and very useful library some day. If I do a: bjam stage --toolset=msvc-8.0 --with-regex Then with 1.35 I don't get any static libraries built, just the dll's. Was this a deliberate change somewhere? It's a problem because the default for auto-linking is to look for static rather than dynamic libraries. John.

For the headers that appear in boost-root/boost, rather than a library specific subdirectory, it is very helpful if they self-identify what library they belong to. This allows scripts to associate the header with a library. The usual way to do this is to include a comment. A typical example: // See http://www.boost.org/libs/config for documentation The exact format doesn't matter. What does matter is that the library name be found somewhere in the file, immediately following a string which contains "/libs/". Below is the result of doing: grep -L "/libs/" *.h* I'd appreciate maintainers adding a library identifying comment to these files. Otherwise I'll do it, which carries a slight risk that I'll get it wrong. Possible bug in Unit Testing routines

In trying to track down a memory leak with my code (using Deleaker, VS2005, Windows XP, boost 1.34.1 from boost consulting), I'm getting the folowing message as being the source of a memory leak. Boost for new compiler

Hi, I apologize if this is a FAQ - I couldn't find much on other compilers I am interested in using boost with a compiler for a DSP - The compiler is somewhat archaic - I'm not using RTTI or exceptions (the compiler supports them but it is currently broken) - the STL has old iostreams and no doubt I will find some other musty corners. I don't have any illusions about getting the whole of boost to compile but I'm sure there are some large pieces that will work OK. I have no problem doing the port myself. I have successfully got shared_ptr and shared_array to work but I needed to make 3 fairly trivial changes to the code to get it to compile. Are boosters interested in folding these changes back into the main source in the interests of making boost more portable or am I on my own here since I am working with an unsupported compiler? I can post the problems I ran into if anyone is interested. Andrew

[Boost-users] Run-time flavors of Boost (aka lib suffix / runtime-options)

Hello list, [I already sent this question to Boost-users but nobody replied there, so I guess that you people might have a better idea] Boost libraries often ship compiled in various different "flavors" (compiled with different runtime-options). First off, is there an official place where this is documented? I didn't find any, besides the header `boost/config/auto_link.hpp'. Based on this header, I tried to document the suffix used by Boost libraries as follows: > A suffix is one or more of the following letters: sgdpn (in that > order). s = static runtime, d = debug build, g = debug/diagnostic > runtime, p = STLPort > build, n = (unsure) STLPort build without iostreams from STLPort > (it looks > like `n' must always be used along with `p'). Additionally, it can > start > with `mt-' to indicate for multi-thread builds. Is this accurate? What is a `static runtime'? My guess is that `-s' is Windows-specific, because on Windows it's common to see both shared libraries and static libraries using the same naming scheme `libfoo.lib' (because in the shared library case, `libfoo.lib' is not a directly shared library but rather an import library), can anyone confirm that? This entails that for most UNIX-like OSes, the `-s' variant doesn't exist, it's the `libfoo.a' static archive that is used instead, is that correct? [serialization] serialization used in multiple DLL problems

Hi, I was able to make this work on serialization after some minor modifications: PS: pseudo-code DLL1: header.h BOOST_IS_ABSTRACT(base); class base { virtual ~base() {} // serialization }; source.cpp class derived : base { // serialization }; BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(derived); void serialize(oarchive& ar) { boost::shared_ptr<derived> p(new derived); ar << p; } DLL2: std::stringstream stm; { oarchive oar(stm); serialize(oar); } { iarchive iar(stm); boost::shared_ptr<base> p; iar >> p; // deserializing a derived class defined in DLL1 in DLL2 } I had to compile serialization as a lib. And making tk_map and kt_map global objects (not sure if this is necessary though), removing the assertion about multiple inserts in static insert function of both [kt][tk]_map's and commenting line 315 of basic_oarchive: //if((cobject_info_set.size() > original_count)){ +{ I don't know the internals of serialization enough to say this is anything near correct.
