I don't know if it is a bug or not, but I was surprised by the effect of a seemingly minor code change. I used to have my expressions, extending proto's ones. Till I needed to assign to ints and unsigned ints, all was good. template <typename Expr> struct my_expression : proto::extends<Expr, my_expression<Expr>, my_domain> { typedef proto::extends<Expr, my_expression<Expr>, my_domain> base_type; my_expression (Expr const& expr = Expr()) : base_type (expr) {}; using base_type::operator =; operator int () const { return static_cast<int>(proto::eval(*this, my_context<Expr> ())); } operator unsigned int () const { return static_cast<unsigned int>(proto::eval(*this, my_context<Expr> ())); } }; This was the case for the example I posted to this mailing list. In the final code, I start having a need to assign to more types (so that my integers can have smaller sizes when people optimize for size or the architecture allows for fast accesses to smaller objects). My first example involved assigning to a signed char, and if all you have are operator int and operator unsigned int, like above, this is ambiguous. Fine, we can add the appropriate operator signed char (): operator signed char () const { return static_cast<signed char>(proto::eval(*this, my_context<Expr> ())); } This works just fine, but the code is just uselessly repeated (and later will be a bit more complicated than this, so I'd like to avoid duplication). TEXT() macro in mutex.inl

Hi, I've just noticed that, in mutex.inl (boost::thread), a string argument to GetProcAddress is inproperly guarded by TEXT() macro. mutex.inl, line 27 ... GetProcAddress(kernel_module, TEXT("TryEnterCriticalSection"))); Since GetProcAddress doesn't have ANSI/Unicode versions, TEXT() should be stripped off. I'm referring to the 1.34.0 beta sources. Thanks in advance.

Java programs are easy to debug, one who catch an exception can print the stack trace, and when it crash, it would print the stack, too. [thread] patch for tss.cpp (win32 + static linking support)

Hi, I believe I've found a bug in tss.cpp, for details please ref http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/26591 . The immediate fix is straightforward, it just involves resetting the native tss value after deleting the pointed-to data at thread exit. Patch is attached to this message. The changes only affects the Win32 platform and I've run the supplied tests under libs/thread/test to verify that it doesn't break anything obvious. As the bug involves dereferencing a dangling pointer and isn't detected most of the time, I'd really appreciate if the patch could be accepted as soon as possible. I'm awaiting Roland Schwartz to "bless" the patch. If he agrees, would it be possible to accept this for 1.34? / Johan

Hello, I have uploaded some documentation and code of a prototype RPC / marshal library: http://dancinghacker.com/code/marshal/ It differs from the one I attached yesterday in that it actually works :-) Tested on Win/MSVC, *should* build on GCC (haven't tested on GCC after recent changes). The code is pretty infant but shows some functionality. The docs on the above website show an example and some discussion points. In addition to what's listed at the website, I'm wondering what the proper way of returning the function call results would be... For example, if the function is void something(int &x), should the modified "x" value on the remote computer appear in the local x after the remote call returns? I can see that as being reasonable if the RPC is synchronous, but if it is asynchronous maybe something like a future would be a good way of providing the modified value? (speaking of, could someone suggest a futures implementation out of the ones that were floating around a while back?) The alternative would be to have all modified parameter values be stored in a call structure (which is what happens now with the regular return value) and accessible from there. Hi, I am designing a server which will going to run on multiprocessor and which will going to provide service to thousand of clients concurrently. I am using boost asio library to do this. I want to use one io_service object per CPU approach for this. Let me describe what I want... 1. I want to create ioservice object as per the no of CPU I have, so that I can distribute the load evenly. 2. How to create a list of ioservice object & make them running all the time even when there is no request to process. What's the definition of idle ioservice in this case... the one which is this the one which is not handling any connection? How can I choose a ioservice out of a pool of idle service whenever a new request comes from the client. 3. Can I restrict no of clients(connections) on each io service, lets say 500 connection on each ioservice or so ? The following piece of code compiles fine: #define BOOST_PROTO_MAX_ARITY 8 #include <boost/xpressive/proto/proto.hpp> while the following gives errors #define BOOST_PROTO_MAX_ARITY 9 #include <boost/xpressive/proto/proto.hpp> and so on for any value of BOOST_PROTO_MAX_ARITY larger than 8. If there's a real problem with more than eight, it would be good to have an #error statement in that case. I'm really interested in having patterns with those many arguments, so once the variable controlling the maximum arity and the one controlling the maximum number of subpatterns in a pattern get decoupled I may be fine, but still giving a clear error message would be helpful. I only need BOOST_PROTO_MAX_ARITY=8. I tried 9 just because I was getting ambiguous conversions, which in the past were due to this. Best regards, Maurizio

Math Toolkit review

I realize that the math toolkit library review ended on 4/27 but better late than never. I have been experimenting with it for the last two weeks. In particular, I have tried to use several distributions (normal, student t, uniform etc), some special functions, and root finders. In all my tests the math library performed as expected, it was fast and reasonably well documented. Note that my testing did not include all functionality in the library. One suggestion - the "normal_distribution" which is implemented by the math library puts it in the boost::math namespace. The "normal_distribution" random generator which is implemented by the random library puts it in the boost namespace. In order to be consistent (and avoid conflicts) the random library should put its classes in the boost::random namespace. All in all, I find the library very useful and I already started using it in my code. Vladimir Valenta

multi_array: num_dimensions() not a static member

Hi, Shouldn't num_dimensions() be a static member of multi_array as it only depends on the size_t template parameter? I am trying to write some template code that takes a type that models the multi_array interface however without an instance of this type I cannot determine the number of dimensions of the array. How should I do this or should a static method be added to the multi_array type? There is a line BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT(std::size_t, dimensionality = NumDims); in the code but this is undocumented. Hi all, I've took 1.34.0 beta for a spin, and so far can report a success -- largeish project compiles fine, passes all tests with virtually no changes to the code. My only concern at the moment is boost.test library. It is not even listed as updated, yet public interface has changed. I am talking about BOOST_AUTO_UNIT_TEST to BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE rename. It would be nice to have some information on what have changed since last version together with some pointers on how to migrate code from older versions. To make matters worse it looks like all links to examples are broken in boost.test documentation, and some examples are just MIA (e.g. auto_unit_test_test.cpp, the place where I naturally tried to find what the new syntax is). Hi, I'd like to create an iostream that writes data in binary format to a pre-allocated block of memory. I'm already using array_sink to handle the 'write to a pre-allocated block of memory' part: char* my_data = new char[1024]; io::stream_buffer<io::array_sink> buf(my_data,1024); std::ostream os(&buf); int i = 15; float f = 5.1345; os << i; os << f; os << "Hello World!"; os << 'c'; However, all the data written to my_data is in text format (i.e. 15 is encoded in 2 bytes 0x31 0x35 instead of 4 (assuming 32-bit integers)). What I'd like is something like file_sink where you specify the mode as binary. The 'mode' seems to be a Device-level decision (as it is with basic_file_sink) so I'm guessing array_sink is not what I need afterall.
