Trac milestones.

It was briefly mentioned that, so far, only moderators (or some other small set of people) can add milestones to the svn trac. Is there a protocol/procedure for creating milestones. It would be beneficial to have other milestones, for example so I can keep track of what bugs and patches I need to make for Boost.Jam 3.1.15. svn repository commit error

I'm getting the following error when I attempt to commit a newly svn-added file to the sandbox: command: svn commit -m "initial checkin" --username jefffaust result: svn: Commit failed (details follow): svn: MKACTIVITY of '...': 403 Forbidden (http://svn.boost.org) I am able to see the repository from a web browser and am able to log in. The C++ committee accepted what is essentially Boost.System for C++0x. See http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2007/n2241.html for the final proposal. That proposal is now reflected in the working paper for the new standard. See http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2007/n2284.pdf The committee made some minor last minute changes. Those changes are not yet reflected in Boost.System. The plan is to bring Boost.System into compliance with the standard sometime in the next month or so. There are still a few outstanding issues; missing clear() specs, constexpr needed on a constructor, error_category should be non-copyable, and perhaps one or two others. --Beman

[Test] boost_unit_test_framework and main()

I'm having trouble getting programs using boost_unit_test_framework to link. The fundamental issue is that trying to link something like this: g++ -fPIC -o algorithms_test algorithms_test.o - lboost_unit_test_framework dies with a linker error: /usr/bin/ld: Undefined symbols: _main collect2: ld returned 1 exit status The issue, of course, is that "main" lives within the library boost_unit_test_framework, but linkers don't look into libraries (either static or dynamic) to find main. I suspect this is also the reason for the FAQ item on the test library page (http:// www.boost.org/libs/test/doc/faq.html#Item_9) which says that Boost Test components cannot be compiled as DLL, but perhaps there are other issues there. Our tests pass because BBv2 decides to put the archive file on the link line: g++ -fPIC -o algorithms_test algorithms_test.o libboost_unit_test_framework.a For some reason, this non-standard practice seems to work... but I can't imagine it's truly portable, and it forces users of boost_unit_test_framework into statically linking in a non- traditional way. Why must main() be in a library? It seems a trivial matter to fix. - Doug

Hi, I would like to be able to compare preprocessor state between different points / different contexts. But I can't see a way to inspect such preprocessing state (include paths, pragma's and macro definitions). The Windows CE CRT does not have support for structured exception translation via _set_se_translator and the eh.h header is not present. Attached is a patch of execution_monitor.ipp on CVS-HEAD to disable the structured exception translation code when _WIN32_WCE is defined. Thanks, -Dave

BoostCon07 testing sprint, results.

First... Thanks to all those who made it to the testing session at BoostCon, especially Victor for the beer :-) Even though I was dead tired by the end of it, it was a lot of fun. The rest... I'll be posting the slides and notes from the session at some near future (when it's clear where they get posted). Don't worry it's nothing exciting ;-) The immediate result from the session is that the current system is very brittle. In particular Thomas identified getting reliable testing results as the most imminent failure point. Unfortunately we didn't get to discussing longer, and hence conclusions, as to the longer term issues. The plan for the near future is to try out the Dart testing results system <http://www.na-mic.org/Wiki/index.php/Dart2Summary>. We are attacking that task from three sides: * Doug & Troy, are going to do a test case of using CMake+CTest which support posting results to Dart. * Noel and myself, are going to make changes to bjam and Boost.Build to support posting results to Dart directly. * I volunteered to make changes to the regression Python scripts to allow posting current results to Dart in addition to posting them to Meta-Comm. I finished doing those changes last night, and the new scripts are in CVS-HEAD. Now, by default, testers doing HEAD regression runs will also post to the Dart server at <http://beta.boost.org:8081/>. Take this also as a notice to testers... > If you are testing CVS-HEAD, please update your regression.py and/or > collect_and_upload_logs.py scripts. * Everyone else is hereby drafted to look at the Dart results, when available, and comment on the system. There was also discussion about using BuildBot for the front half of the testing problem, controlling testing resources. Sorry if I can't remember the persons name, but there was one person and myself willing to look at setting up and developing a test use case for BuildBot. The future... Since we didn't get to discuss much past the above topics, I'd like it if we continue the discussion in the testing list. Topics to still discuss: * Other possible immediate solutions than the ones above. In particular Stefans mentioned QMTest before the conference, so it would be nice to get someone to work on a test use case for that. * The longer term question of how to get more testing resources and how to manage them is still up in the air. Finally, I'll set up a section in the new wiki to keep track of testing information as needed. PS. I've avoided bringing up the subject of CMake vs. Boost.Build, mostly because it's a subject with personal ramifications, and partly because it's mostly a topic a separate topic. Using multiple versions of Boost

Hello, Assume that you have multiple developers developing plugins for a commercial package and that we recently deployed boost 1.34 to our facility. For some informed developers, they will switch over to 1.34 whereas others might not know and stick with 1.33.1 or even 1.32. Now imagine loading in all these plugins into the 3rd party app, wouldn't there be some sort of symbol problems especially with boost run-time libraries (take the regex library for example) ?? Does anyone have suggestions on handling this? A typical way we solve versioning our open source libraries is to add a namespace to it. eg. SomeLibrary::v1_33_1 (although we never did attempt to fiddle around with boost). Any other ideas? Thanks!

Hi everyone: If calling convention is changed to __stdcall in vc8, there will be a link error like this: error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "class boost::filesystem::file_status __stdcall boost::filesystem::detail::status_api(class std::basic_string<wchar_t,struct std::char_traits<wchar_t>,class std::allocator<wchar_t> > const &,unsigned int &)" ... Hello, I have packed up and posted the most recent iteration of the remote procedure call library. Docs and code available at: http://dancinghacker.com/code/rpc/ It is also available from the boost sandbox under /rpc The major improvements are: * futures are now used to handle return values and "out" parameters. this allows the rpc library execute all of the calls asynchronously, with the futures interface allowing the user to decide whether the call indeed behaves asynchronously (by taking all the returned values into proper futures) or behaves synchronously (either by storing a return value into a non-future variable, where the future->variable cast will block until the future is set, or by sending a non-future variable as an "in/out" parameter) * what gets to be marshaled back is completely determined by how the call is made, rather than having to be specified explicitly: // embed the function id and parameter for an int (int) call rpc::call<std::string, int (int)> call_inc__1("inc", 1); // if the returned handler is ignored, nothing is marshaled back: client(call_inc__1); // if the returned handler is stored in an acknowledgement, only a confirmation of completion // is marshaled back. ack = client(call_inc__1); BOOST_CHECK_NO_THROW(ack->completion().get()); // if the returned handler is stored in a proper handler, the return value will be marshaled back rpc::async_returning_handler<int>::ptr handler_int = client(call_inc__1); boost::future<int> future_int(handler_int->return_promise()); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL(future_int, 2); // handler returners are imlplicitly convertible to futures, which will carry the returned value boost::future<int> result_inc = client(call_inc__1); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL(result_inc, 2); // handler returners are also convertible to values, which immediately // get assigned the value of the return value future, making the call synchronous int inced1 = client(call_inc__1); BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL(inced1, 2); More examples are in the HTML docs.
