Hi, Thank you so much for your comments. I looked at the CodeProject article you suggested, and it had a pretty much similar idea. I would like to reformat the source code according to the boost coding standards and integrate with boost.interface. I believe this is possible because "The Code Project Open License (CPOL) 1.0" http://www.codeproject.com/info/cpol10.aspx seems to be compatible with the boost licence*.* IANAL: Somone please help me to verify this. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Hi, while I was trying to compile my project with boost trunk I saw several warnings coming from Boost.Thread. These are always shown: ...\boost/thread/win32/thread.hpp(183) : warning C4251: 'boost::thread::thread_info_mutex' : class 'boost::mutex' needs to have dll-interface to be used by clients of class 'boost::thread' ...\boost/thread/win32/mutex.hpp(20) : see declaration of 'boost::mutex' ...\boost/thread/win32/thread.hpp(184) : warning C4251: 'boost::thread::thread_info' : class 'boost::intrusive_ptr<T>' needs to have dll-interface to be used by clients of class 'boost::thread' with [ T=boost::detail::thread_data_base ] Additionally, these are shown with /Wp64: ...\boost\thread\win32\basic_timed_mutex.hpp(36) : warning C4312: 'type cast' : conversion from 'long' to 'void *' of greater size ...\boost\thread\win32\basic_timed_mutex.hpp(142) : warning C4311: 'type cast' : pointer truncation from 'void *const ' to 'long' ...\boost\thread\win32\basic_timed_mutex.hpp(142) : warning C4312: 'type cast' : conversion from 'long' to 'void *' of greater size ...\boost/thread/win32/thread.hpp(530) : warning C4267: 'return' : conversion from 'size_t' to 'int', possible loss of data ...\boost/thread/win32/condition_variable.hpp(58) : warning C4244: '=' : conversion from '__w64 int' to 'unsigned int', possible loss of data I believe, 4251 can be safely disabled with #pragma (along with 4275 if it comes up somewhere I didn't notice). In case of 4267 it seems like the return type should rather be changed. As for others, most of them come from interlocked macros and probably could be disabled as well, although the casting pointers to integers bugs me. I haven't checked the 1.35 RC branch but if the issue persists there too, I'd like to ask to make the release warning-free too. I guess, a couple of #pragmas won't break anything. And I have some other notes: 1. I found BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT macro usage in some places. On VC 7.1+ it expands into a static constant member which has to be defined in a namespace scope despite of that it's a compile-time constant. Nevertheless, these members are not defined. I know that MSVC just works without it but strictly speaking this is not C++ compliant. Since these constants are members of non-template classes I would suggest to use enums instead of the macro. 2. VC 8.0 and later has _ReadBarrier and _WriteBarrier in addition to _ReadWriteBarrier. These could be used in interlocked_read.hpp. 3. There are tabs in win32/mutex.hpp:21 4. There is a potential memory leak in win32/thread.hpp:480. If the push_back throws the thread object is leaked. Remarkably, the pthread version is safe since it uses auto_ptr.

shared_ptr / auto_ptr

Hi, is there any reason why shared_ptr does not have a ctor that takes an auto_ptr and a deleter? I also wonder if there is a resource leak if I just write: auto_ptr<T> a = ...; my_deleter d = ...; shared_ptr<T> s( a.release(), d ); Regards, Daniel

Boost 1.34.1 and Visual Studio 2008 compiler

Hi All, I am recieving a "Unknown compiler version - please run the configure tests and report the results" during the compilation of our projects. I am aware of why i am receving this output. However, i would like to know if tested are being done for this version (1.34.1) on VS2008 Compiler or/and if is there a document describing known issues with this compiler. shifted_ptr crash quest & intrusive_list revival

Greetings: I have uploaded a cleaner version of shifted_ptr including better intrusive containers (intrusive_list & intrusive_stack) stripped from redundant information. The containers were initialy designed for shifted_ptr but proposes an interface that could be extended from ground up. Indeed, in this concept containers have no idea what the element_type is; it only knows about pointers to nodes. The responsability of knowing about the element_type is forwarded to the iterator, usualy using within a loop, which is eventually dereferenced appropriately. Having stricter containers could have been there but this is primaly a tool that is adapted to shifted_ptr and removes a lot of forward declarations because the type needs not be known. Secondly right now I would be happy to learn segfault are detected using shifted_ptr. Please provide simple case scenarios and I will trace the problem. [1.35.0] Test regressions

For a full list of 1.35.0 test regressions, see http://beta.boost.org/development/tests/release/developer/summary.html There are a few 1.35.0 regressions I'm not particularly concerned about; VC++ 7.1 is now old news, and no one seems to care much about the Intel/Windows compiler. Given that VC++ 9.0 has been out for awhile now, it would be nice to kill off a few more of those regressions before 1.35.0 ships: * Conversion * Graph * Python * TR1 Red regressions I'm concerned about are: * Numeric/interval on Darwin. * Serialization on Darwin. * Spirit on Darwin. If anyone can quickly come up with fixes, there is still (barely) enough time to get them into 1.35.0. --Beman

As far as I understand it is possible to use in boost::any techniques similar to boost::function. I.e. split virtual behavior and actual data. It will help to avoid heap allocation while copying boost::any with stored small objects. What do you think about adding it to next releases of boost?

[smart_ptr] enable_shared_from_this enhancement

I'm curious a patch to boost::enable_shared_from_this that makes shared_from_this() work inside constructors would be considered? The implementation I've got in mind (haven't actually tried it yet) would work as follows. I'd add two shared_ptrs to enable_shared_from_this, call them "internal_shared" and "external_shared". external_shared would be assigned the external shared_ptr which first takes ownership of *this. internal_shared would be initialized with the "this" pointer, and a custom deleter which would reset external_shared. internal_shared would be reset right after external_shared is initialized (when an external shared_ptr takes ownership of *this). Any calls to shared_from_this() that occur prior to an external shared_ptr taking ownership of *this (such as in the constructor) would get a copy of internal_shared. So the idea is, external_shared would keep the object alive as long as any copies of internal_shared that got made in the constructor are still around. -- Frank
