Many congratulations to the eight successful Google Summer of Code applicants: http://code.google.com/soc/2008/boost/about.html We had a lot of very strong proposals this year, so our commiserations go to all those student's who weren't successful: we really appreciated all of your applications, and some of you lost out by just a hair's breadth, so I hope you'll consider applying again next year if you're able. [Fusion][Config][TR1] Some fixes committed.

Joel, I hope you don't mind but I've just committed some relatively-trivial fixes to Fusion for two issues: The Boost.Config macro BOOST_PARTIAL_SPECIALIZATION_EXPLICT_ARGS has been renamed BOOST_NO_PARTIAL_SPECIALIZATION_IMPLICIT_DEFAULT_ARGS and docs and tests have been added now to Boost.Config. Includes of <utility> by fusion have been replaced by includes of <boost/config/no_tr1/utility.hpp> - this fixes some TR1 failures caused by cyclic dependencies between TR1 and Fusions Tuples. [circular_buffer] why does the copy constructor not copy capacity

Hello, I've been finding the circular_buffer library very helpful (thanks for a great lib!), but recently found the following behavior surprising (this is using a recent svn trunk, if it matters): boost::circular_buffer<int> one(3); boost::circular_buffer<int> two(one); std::cout<<one.capacity()<<std::endl; // outputs 3 std::cout<<two.capacity()<<std::endl; // outputs 0, I was expecting 3 Why does the copy constructor not copy the capacity? It seems like capacity is an essential property of circular_buffer, and as such I'd expect it to be copied as a part of copy construction. I'm sorry if this rationale is covered somewhere, I looked but couldn't find anything. If there isn't a strong reason, would it be possible to change this behavior in the implementation? (it would still satisfy the stated postcondition in the documentation, AFAICT, except the complexity would change to be linear in the capacity) Thanks, Stjepan

[smart_ptr] optimize current enable_shared_from_this with 100% compatibility

The attached patch optimizes the current implementation of enable_shared_from_this, it saves one plain pointer. That might not be very much, but it's a start. It is 100% compatible for the users, no features are dropped. Further improvements might be possible, but I think the attached patch is a good base. Peter, do you see any chance for it? If not, please tell me why and (if possible) what needs to be improved. Regards, Daniel

Kowalke Oliver has just port a proposal to manage with user exceptions on the context of the future library, passing a mpl::vector of user exceptions to the point which could throw the exception. I need to think a little bit to see if this could be adapted to the exception_ptr library. Anthony, can I take a look to your implementation? I have make a comparaison between the 4 implementations. 0.a copy_exception/clone_exception : EXCEPTION use clone and works well for exceptions inheriting either from boost::clone_base either from boost::exception. For the other store a unknown_exception 0.b current_exception not provided by EXCEPTION 1.a _exp_throwable has virtual destructor: FUTURE & POET 1.b template< class E > class _exp_throwable_impl has virtual destructor: FUTURE 2 exception_ptr _exp_current_exception a _CATCH_AND_RETURN/_CATCH_AND_RETURN_WHAT: POET return the result of what() of the exceptions instead of the exception iteself for standard exceptions. b catch and return exceptions: each implementation use a limited set of exceptions, the standard ones, the boost ones for FUTURE & POET,and the specific exception of each library FUTURE & POET c catch and return for std::exception: PETER & FUTURE store std::run_time (with the std::exception::what() result),POET stores boost::unknown_exception d catch and return for bad_alloc: FUTURE as a header_only library has an static initialization of s_bad_alloc (Why POET don't have it) 3 header_only: FUTURE & POET 1.a 1.b This seams not necessary, shared pointer calls to the correct destructor given on the construtor not the ~T, as Peter as already explained in other posts. 2.a the catch and return needs to preserv the exception as much as possible, so _CATCH_AND_RETURN should be used instead of _CATCH_AND_RETURN_WHAT _CATCH_AND_RETURN should be boostyfied BOOST_EXCEPTION_PRT_CATCH_AND_RETURN and should be undefined at the end of the file. This should be evident for most of the boosters, but why we need this tranformation? 2.b This is the most conflictual point. It is clear that _exp_current_exception will have always a limited set of exceptions. So why not let its definition to the user, providing some mechanisms facilitating the user task. 2.c, 2.b Peter could you explain why we need to transform std::exception and std::bad_alloc onto other exception 2.d The current_exception definition must be in a single compilation unit, and so it can be in the if the point 2.b _exp_current_exception definition is let to the user there is no static initialization problem because the variable is defined in one single compilation unit. 3 As the class is not a template a binary library is possible. If _exp_current_exception is defined by the library this has the liability that the _exp_current_exception will take in account a limited number of exceptions. By the size of the library, a header only library seams also a good choice if the point 2.b _exp_current_exception definition is let to the user. The user can define this in a separated compilation unit. I have attached a exception_ptr.cpp file which must be compiled separately by the user. The user can define BOOST_EXCEPTION_PTR_CATCH_AND_RETURN_USER_EXCEPTIONS__HPP with the file including the user catch and return specifics. I know that this is not very elegant, but considering that this is only an emulatuion ... Anthony, can your implementation improve this issues? TSS performance problem

I did a benchmark on RHEL 4 64-bit with gcc 3.4.5 and found a large difference in the performance of TSS. shared_mutex deadlocks?

I'm seeing a deadlock on a dual core Pentium D from libs/smart_ptr/test/sp_atomic_mt_test.cpp when USE_RWLOCK is defined (which causes it to use boost::shared_mutex). It works on uniprocessor.

Hi ! Peter Dimov commited some refacturings for shared_ptr last weekend. One commit triggered the following warning from gcc-4.2: In file included from yield_k_test.cpp:12: $BOOST_ROOT/boost/boost/detail/yield_k.hpp: In function 'void boost::detail::yield(unsigned int)': $BOOST_ROOT/boost/detail/yield_k.hpp:114: warning: missing initializer for member 'timespec::tv_nsec' This is gcc-4.2 on SuSE-10.3 and Kubuntu Hardy. We compile our code with -Wextra. Adding -Wextra to the compile flags of the yield_k test in libs/smart_ptr/test shows this warning in the regression test. I've got a small fix attached which (hopefully) initialises "rqtp" completely in the initialiser list and removes the (hopefully) redundant assignments. [Serialization] Thread-safety of trunk code

Hey Robert, I know I promised I'd look into it a long time ago, and I finally got around to it. It appears you have addressed the thread-safety issue by ensuring that all the mutable singleton objects get created before main. Is this correct? If so, then the problem is shifted to the implementation-specifics. I see two things that need to be determined for a given compiler/OS: 1) If you dynamically load a dll/shared object (eg, dlopen/LoadLibrary) does your loader guarantee that the global C++ constructors will be called? I recall some Unices that I've had the misfortune of coming across where this is not the case. 2) Does the singleton<T> + static T reference hack work as expected on the compiler? For users, perhaps it would be most helpful to have tests that test the above. I think there are tests that test the second case indirectly. If memory serves, BBv2 is a hurdle to getting the first in a test-case. Perhaps one of the BBv2 gurus can help you there ;-) Other than that, it looks good to me. Good job rewriting the dangerous parts rather than patching in the thread-safety.
