Dear Boosters, I'd like to remind you that there is a formal review of the Boost.Locale library running these days. http://lists.boost.org/boost-announce/2011/04/0298.php It is very important to provide the feedback during the formal review so it would be possible to decide whether it is valuable addition to boost (I hope so). I know that some of view provided very good and important feedback during preliminary reviews and some of you already use it in your projects. [Fusion] fold takes state by cref. Why ?

Why is the State passed by const reference ? I have a couple of use case (like using fold to access the element (i0,...,in) of a fusion sequence of pointer to ... pointer to T array) where I need to be able to discriminate the constness of the State to forward to the proper PFO overload of operator(). Is there any intrinsic stuff I am missing ?

Boost Verify

Does it just evaluate the expression or does it also fail is it evaluates to false? Boost MPL metafunction shortcut

I was thinking lately that it is a shame we can't do the following : boost::mpl::transform< SomeSequence, _1&> instead of the lengthy boost::mpl::transform< SomeSequence, add_reference<_1> > same goes for *, const, volatile : boost::mpl::transform< SomeSequence, volatile _1**&> Could it be possible to get such a behavior in MPL by having a pass of replacing type qualifier by corresponding metafunction until none are left then apply the lambda ? In the same vein, having a MPL trandform turning a sequence of std::vector into their corresponding value_type require out of line small metafunction to be written. I guess a macro like BOOST_MPL_ADAPTED_PLACEHOLDER( v, (type)(value_type)(reference)(const_reference) ) builds a whoel familly of _v1, ..., _v5 placeholder which behaves like _n and expose typedef called value_type etc ... that resolve to said small lambda function directly. This would allow for a terse: boost::mpl::transform< SomeSequence, _v1::reference> Are these ideas out of the question due to some internals of MPL I missed ? Are they worthy a patch ?

[serialization] conflicting declaration in version.hpp

Hello, I've just updated the trunk version of Boost (rev. 71184). Now GCC 4.6 fails to compile due to the following error: --- [error] --- boost-trunk/boost/serialization/version.hpp:57:17: error: conflicting declaration ‘int boost::serialization::version<T>::value’ boost-trunk/boost/serialization/version.hpp:52:5: error: ‘boost::serialization::version<T>::value’ has a previous declaration as ‘const int boost::serialization::version<T>::value’ boost-trunk/boost/serialization/version.hpp:57:17: error: declaration of ‘const int boost::serialization::version<T>::value’ outside of class is not definition [-fpermissive] --- [/error] --- It seems that adding the const specifier fixes the problem, that is: #ifndef BOOST_NO_INCLASS_MEMBER_INITIALIZATION template<class T> const int version<T>::value; #endif Could you fix it? Greetings, There is more to come but I just documented the main classes of the Shifted Pointer code. To generate & look at the docs simply use: $ cd shifted_ptr/ $ svn up $ cd libs/smart_ptr/doc $ doxygen $ firefox html/index.html Some people like and some people dislike Doxygen but in my opinion it keeps the docs and the code in perfect harmony and requires no duplication of the function names and parameters. [GSOC]Proposal withdrawn

Hello I made a big mistake when submitting my proposal. On April 8, I was not able to see my proposal in the proposal list, so I click the button "Withdrawn" (as suggested in the gsoc mailing list) to after resubmit a new one. But nothing happens so I submit again but it seems that nothing happens again because my proposal status is now "withdrawn". Can I have a chance to resubmit ?

help with including boost.log into the current trunk

I would appreciate some help in including the logging libs into the boost compilation process. I am using the recent SVN trunks, Cygwin 1.7.9 and g++ (GCC) 4.3.4. Unfortunately there is nor README or INSTALL docs as I am used to in a GNU automake environment. So I tried my best based on what I found google-ing it: I downloaded the current boost SVN trunk and the current boost-log SVN trunk. Then I linked the log directories into the boost trunk: $ ln -s boost-log/trunk/boost-log/libs/log/ boost-trunk/libs/ $ ln -s boost-log/trunk/boost-log/boost/log/ boost-trunk/boost/ Compiling boost with normal ./bjam does not recognise the log components at all: ... Component configuration: - chrono : building - date_time : building - exception : building - filesystem : building - graph : building - graph_parallel : building - iostreams : building - math : building - mpi : building - program_options : building - python : building - random : building - regex : building - serialization : building - signals : building - system : building - test : building - thread : building - wave : building ...patience... Explicitly including it gets me an error message: $ ./bjam.exe target-os=cygwin --with-log error: wrong library name 'log' in the --with-<library> option. What am I missing? Proposed Library Boost.Algorithm

(Finally) I have uploaded to the vault <http://www.boostpro.com/vault/index.php?action=downloadfile&filename=Boost.…> a proposal for the Boost.Algorithm library. This has been a matter of interest and discussion for a long, long time. Some of this code was written during the "Library in a week" session at BoostCon 2008. More was written last summer after this year's BoostCon. There is no way that I can write and submit all the algorithms that people want/need/are interested in, so I am proposing to set up a system by which people can submit algorithms to be included in the library, and have them reviewed, much like how new libraries are reviewed for acceptance into boost. The difference will be that a new algorithm is generally a much smaller piece of code than a new library, so hopefully we can lower the barrier to getting small pieces of code into Boost. So, what's in this proposal? 1) Three search algorithms: Boyer-Moore, Boyer-Moore-Horspool and Knuth-Morris-Pratt. (search.hpp) 2) A set of predicates for determining if a sequence is ordered (by some criteria) (ordered.hpp) Originally written by Grant Erickson during the "Library in a week" session at Boostcon 2008, and reworked somewhat by myself. 3) A set of predicates for determining other properties of a sequence, based on some suggestions for C++0x. (all.hpp) 4) An algorithm for restricting a value between two endpoints (clamp.hpp) And, of course, test cases and documentation. -- Marshall

I study a lot about your libraries.I saw ideas on graph in 2010 GSoC.I had studied graph theory,algorithm engineering.One of my interests is planar graph. I have found that some features may be added in your graph library.As: 1. For max flow and min cut Ford-Fulkerson and Dinitz Blocking Flow algorithms. 2. Fow min cut, the library has only Stoer Wagner algo.There are several randomized algo with high success rate as Krager's contraction or Recursive Contraction algo.These can be added. 3. Check if a graph have an Euler tour and find one and/or all possible Euler tours. 4.There are nine algorithms implemented on Planar Graph.We can implement some more algorithms as there exists a lot of algorithms on it. I have details plan on every topic.So I am just curious if you are interested in these types of algorithms.I thought you might be interested.So if you express interest on any topic,please let me know.I am eager to send you details. Hi Everyone, Apologies for the cross-post, but I just want to announce that after a couple months delay because of some outstanding bugs and TODO items that needed to get dealt with, I am now ready to package a 0.9 release and with that in mind I've just uploaded the 0.9-beta release of cpp-netlib. When the beta period (1 week) is over and all outstanding bugs are addressed, the 0.9 release will be the basis for submission for review to the Boost C++ Library. You can get the beta from: https://github.com/cpp-netlib/cpp-netlib/downloads What's New in 0.9 (taken from the documentation): - IMPORTANT BREAKING CHANGE: By default all compile-time heavy parser implementations are now compiled to external static libraries. In order to use cpp-netlib in header-only mode, users must define the preprocessor macro BOOST_NETWORK_NO_LIB before including any cpp-netlib header. This breaks code that relied on the version 0.8.x line where the library is strictly header-only. - More consistent message API for client and server messages (request and response objects). - Refactoring of internal implementations to allow better separation of concerns and more manageable coding/documentation. - Client and Server constructors that support Boost.Parameter named parameters. - Client and Server cosntructors now take in an optional reference to a Boost.Asio io_service to use internally. - Documentation updates to reflect new APIs. This Beta has been tested mainly on Linux (GCC 4.4, 4.5) and Mac OS X (10.6.7, Xcode 3.2.x w/ GCC 4.2.1) builds against Boost trunk and Boost 1.45. Note that cpp-netlib does NOT work with Boost 1.46.1 because of some breaking changes in the Boost.Spirit customization points have caused cpp-netlib to cease to play well with it. [QNX] Which macro to identify QNX operating system?

Students and other interested parties, I would love it if there was a Boost quality JSON data parser, and optional printer, library. Currently I use one based on Spirit1 which has many drawbacks. I've been waiting for someone in the Spirit team, i.e. Joel, to have some mythical free time and inclination to write such a thing. But I'd really love one sooner, rather than later. Having one that is good and based on the latest Spirit would be wonderful. I can't say I have the time to mentor such a project. [GSoC] NLP Idea for GSoC 2011 project

Hello list, I have worked with Boost on my projects but haven't really thought of using C++ as a language for NLP. The NLP that I have done is on Python and Java, for their built-in string methods. I don't know if this is inexperience or ignorance, but does C++ work well for NLP? I was thinking of having a GSoC project that is devoted to provide support for NLP. I mean like the kind that looks real easy on python. Also, I was looking at some C++ code using Boost/tokenizer.hpp that tokenized some text and it looked a bit scary. I've got this message after running a bjam warning: mismatched versions of Boost.Build engine and core warning: Boost.Build engine (bjam) is 03.1.19 warning: Boost.Build core (at I:/boost-trunk/tools/build/v2) is 2011.04-svn Should I worry about this? I've tried to re-build using I:\boost-trunk\tools\build\v2\engine>bjam --toolset=msvc >build_bat.log but it still complains ### No toolset specified. Please use --toolset option. Is this supposed to be --toolset=msvc or --toolset msvc Suggestions? Greetings, For those who are not aware in 2008 I wrote a memory manager running in real-time so that heap objects are being destructed instantly. [config] Boost PP and variadic macros

This is largely directed to John Maddock, the maintainer of config, but of course anyone else can respond who is interested. I have been working to integrate my VMD library, and essentially variadic macro support, into Boost PP, with help and discussion offline of Paul Mensonides. I am now at the testing phase and all is now going well. This is currently being done in a separate library but when Paul and I are satisfied we intend to update the trunk with our changes. The library is at https://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/branches/pplib/variadics. One problem that I have can be explained by the fact that Boost PP currently does not depend on any other Boost library, not even Boost config. The reason for this is that Boost PP has been designed to work with C compilers ( or C++ compilers in C mode ) as well as C++ compilers. This means that the code to detect variadic macro support in Boost is duplicated in two places, both in config, which I basically started with the blessing of John Maddock with the BOOST_NO_VARIADIC_MACROS macro, and in Boost PP in a configuration file which I have coded and essentially duplicates the code in config for variadic macro support. I do not like this. Duplicating functionality in two different places, even as simple as determining variadic macro support for compilers, is error prone and a maintenance problem. Changes in one place have to be done in the other, and this would need to constantly be tracked. My initial thought was to see if config could work with C compilers, but all investigation there has led me to believe that it would be too many unnecessary changes to config, would complicate config greatly, would need extensive testing against all compilers, and that since config is central to all of Boost such a potential massive change to it it is a bad idea. So my current thought is to remove the code in config which tests for variadic macro support for a given compiler, to determine if BOOST_NO_VARIADIC_MACROS should be set, into a separate header file for each compiler which might set BOOST_NO_VARIADIC_MACROS, and then #include that header file in the compiler's header file, at the place where currently the setting of BOOST_NO_VARIADIC_MACROS exists ( or possible at the end ). The separate header file itself for testing variadic macro support is easily C compatible and I could use it in my Boost PP configuration file. This would eliminate duplication of the code to test for variadic macro support in config and Boost PP while keeping the goal of allowing Boost PP to still work with C compilers. Is this possible/desirable as far as config goes ? It would only affect the current code for setting BOOST_NO_VARIADIC_MACROS, hardly a Boost world-shaking event, and can easily be done by me and tested in regression tests. If it is, one further consideration is that the code in the Boost PP configuration file still would have to internally duplicate the checking and order of each compiler in the 'select_compiler_config.h' in config, but this is at least much better, and much less of a maintenance problem for Boost PP, than having to duplicate the code for checking for variadic macro support itself. Even this could be worked around, with a probably undesirable change to 'select_compiler_config.h', which I will proceed to suggest nonetheless. If we could add to that file another set of #defines for the corresponding variadic macro checking header file for each compiler that needs it. Something like: #define BOOST_COMPILER_CONFIG_NVM "boost/config/compiler/somecompiler_nvm.hpp" then in my Boost PP config header file I could go: #include <boost/config/select_compiler_config.hpp> #ifdef BOOST_COMPILER_CONFIG_NVM #include BOOST_COMPILER_CONFIG_NVM #endif and I could then check BOOST_NO_VARIADIC_MACROS and this will work for C compilers ( 'select_compiler_config.hpp' itself has nothing related to C++ and should work with any C compiler AFAICS ). But I would understand that littering 'select_compiler_config.hpp' with another set of #defines just to satisfy my need in Boost PP may not be acceptable to the clean design of that file, even if it would eliminate my need to reduplicate its logic in the Boost PP configuration file for variadic macro support in Boost PP which I have created.

[chrono] Interoperability with ICL and common concepts

Hi Vicente and Boost Chronoists, thank you for implementing Boost.Chrono! It's a very fine piece of software :) Currently I'm checking out the usage of chrono types with icl::intervals and interval containers. Obviously, using intervals of chrono::time_points or chrono::durations can be an important use case. Also ICL already works well with other date and time data types from boost data_time, so chrono's interoperability should be at least as easy. A problem here is, that Icl, while working instantly with built in data types (e.g. int, short, double or even int*), for other numeric types (e.g. boost::rational) or types "based on integral types" (e.g. data_time::ptime) I needed to provide adapter code. I think it'd be ideal, if boost libraries interoperated with each other just out of the box, of course. To achive this, we have to find a common understanding of those concepts, that make a seamless interoperability work. I think, this is important work to be done, because it widens the view from one's own library perspective to a broader horizon of generic interplay. The problem: There is a minimal set of requirements that Icl expects for the domain types of intervals and interval containers (1) A zero element, more precisely an identity element w.r.t. the type's composition operation, which usually is +. An assumption that works well for all built in types and many STL-types is, that we get this element by the default constructor T(). (2) A strict weak ordering < (3) For all discrete types and for continuous numeric types: Operators ++, -- (Only pre-variants needed e.g. ++x) (3.1) For discrete types ++/-- increments/decrements by a *least step* (3.2) For continuous numeric types ++/-- increments/decrements by a *unit step*. Most of the functionality of Icl works if requirements (1) through (3) are met. In addition, there are some functions that require a distance type, but only for more specific types, namely for numeric types that use varying interpretations of the origin (zero), like epoch based date and time and pointer-addresses. BTW, do we already have a name for this type of concept? origin_based_equidistant_scalar origin_based_equidifferential_scalar because they are based to an arbitrary origin, but have comparable differences or distances. Or shorter equidistant_scalar equidifferential_scalar because if we emphasize, that by "comparable differences or distances", it is implied that the origin is choosable. May favorite is "equidistant_scalar". This concept reminds me of "Levels of measurement" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_of_measurement (4) For such equidistant scalar types D the ICL assumes, that the type of the difference values of D is D::difference_type. To summarize, for a domain type Dom, Icl expects Dom(), <, ++, -- and if dom is a equidistant scalar type we expect an associated type Dom::difference_type to be defined. Now boost::chrono::duration (D1*) Has a default ctor that leaves the type undefined. (D2) Has <, Ok. (D3) Has ++, --, Ok. boost::chrono::time_point (T1) Has a default ctor that implements the semantics assumed by the ICL, Ok. (T2) Has <, Ok. (T3*) Does not have ++, --. (T4*) Does not have difference_type So I end up with 3 of my requirements not met (D1, T3, T4) D1: Default ctor for chrono::duration leaves objects undefined. I assume this is due to efficiency considerations, nevertheless unfavorable from the view point of my library. For all built in types and most of the STL there has been something like an intuitive maybe unconscious may be conscious agreement to assign the identity element w.r.t. the fundamental composing operation of the constructed object's type as the semantics of the default ctor. From an algebraic, generic and interoprability point of view (and IMHO) this is the best choice. This choice has not been taken for chrono::durations, which is a little inconsistent also, because interestingly for its chrono::time_point type the semantic is just the desired one. The possibility of default ctor customization is no remedy, because ICL should ideally be completely "chrono agnostic" and still interoperable. For the same reason duration::zero() is not an option. T3: chrono::time_point does not implement ++ and --. I assume this is because of the specific maths that is designed for chrono::time_points (P) and durations (D) where - : P x P -> D + : P x D -> P + : D x P -> P but + : P x P -> P //verboten But this should not be an argument against ++ and -- because the "least steppable unit" for integral rep types as well as the "unit" for floating point rep types, that is processed by ++ and -- is the same for time_points and durations. T4: Finally, difference_type as the associated type for time_point is not defined. IMO, it should be, because from a concept point of view, chrono::time_point falls in the same equidistant scalar concept that other types are in (e.g. T*, random_access_iterator<T>) and those associate a difference_type. These are the main problems of Icl/Chrono interoperability. There are a few minor ones as well. Let's discuss these first. I hope we can arrive at a solution, where Icl can be chrono agnostic and vica versa and still everything works well together. Based on that, we could fix similar issues for other libs like data_time. There is already lexical_cast and Boost.StringConvert (to be reviewed soon) that use an intermediary type or mechanism. Boost.Conversion is intended to provide an interface for direct conversions which should be more efficient in most of the cases (as you have shown). Why Boost.Build?

Hey everyone, Is there a reason why Boost uses Boost.Jam/Boost.Build for reasons other than tradition? Does it have advantages over other build systems, in particular CMake (which I consider to be its main competitor)? Are there many people/projects who use Boost.Jam/Boost.Build outside of Boost? These questions are asked purely out of curiosity due to my ignorance of Boost.Jam/Boost.Build, not because I have an axe to grind. Cheers, Greg

std::tuple vs boost::tuple clashes in C++0x

Just wanted to post a general comment, to boost library developers. There are lots of names which in C++0x occur in both boost:: and std::. The big ones are tuple, make_tuple and array, but there are others (for example locking functions from thread). I am fixing bugs which occur in the C++0x mode of clang/libc++, and the vast majority of these bugs are tests which write things like: ... using namespace boost; using namespace std; .... tuple<int,int> t; Even if you don't include <tuple>, a definition of tuple gets pulled in by <utility>, which almost everything includes. Please don't write "using namespace std; using namespace boost;" in boost tests. You probably shouldn't write it at all :) Chris

Hello, I want you to address several points: It would be very hard to get the consensus about the way to solve the problem. Probably the best and the most wishful thinking solution is to assume that all strings are UTF-8 based, however it is not the reality. The problem is actually not the string but rather the way you code. Even if you create a perfect UTF-8 string and then call fopen(your_perfect_string.c_str(),"r") Under windows... And it would not work <sigh... damn Windows> As you can see from multiple discussions, there are many contradicting requirements about how should string look like and what should it bring with. If you want to provide better Unicode awareness to Boost you don't need new cool utf-XYZ string, you need a policy. I think boost::filesystem v3 is a big step forward, it allows you to use UTF-8 strings on Windows which I think is a really good beginning. This is my opinion. Boost.Locale and several other my projects (CppCMS, CppDB) live happily with std::string. The problem is that in vast majority of cases you don't need encoding aware string, as so many operations you usually do on strings are encoding agnostic. But this is other story. Bottom line, if you want to improve Unicode awareness of Boost I think you need to adopt Boost.Filesystem v3 like policy all over the code base of Boost. 1. Use Wide API as native one in Boost everywhere under Windows 2. Use char * API as native one in Boost everywhere under non-Windows platforms 3. Use std::codecvt to handle this (after many tricks... ) The Unicode String/Encoding Aware String is the last thing to do not the first thing. Why? 1. Because you will never get the consensus about what is the "right-thing" to do (wide, narrow, utf-8, utf-16) etc. Project that are handled and directed by a single source or management like Qt, GTK(mm), Java, C#, Python or others may decide what is the right thing. This will never happen in Boost as it is too pluralistic even in cases where it does not always make sense, just because the way libraries are developed, reviewed and got in - based on public reviews that eventually encourages diversity. 2. Because you would not likely to be able to enforce users to actually use your string. As boost is more about collaboration then enforcement of specific style. 3. Even heavy discussions there hadn't got to any conclusion. So what would happen and final review of your library? My $0.02 Artyom

[release][1.47] Release branch open + schedule

Hello everyone, It's been over a week since the release, so it's time to open the release branch. Since we're running late, and we haven't discussed the changes to the schedule, and I think it helps people to pace their development, we should probably decide on a schedule for this release pretty quickly, and then discuss the schedule for future releases later. We discussed having longer betas, 4 weeks was suggested. If we do that this time, it'll leave a very small window for merging to release, so I think 3 weeks might be better. Something like: 4th April: Release branch closed for beta (bug fixes only). 11th April: Beta target date. 2nd May: Release target date. Note: That's just a proposal, not the actual schedule. It isn't up to me. That's still a tight schedule, maybe a shorter beta or a delayed release would be better. Any thoughts? Daniel
