Templight Installation - watch your version of svn

I have just been installing Templight and have hit a problem. Templight installation involves installing Clang and then applying a patch to it. Older versions of svn (before 1.7) do not have the svn patch command which is used on the installation. Unfortunately Ubuntu 12.04 has version 1.6.17 installed and does not offer an update. The solution to this has been to upgrade svn to a later version from WANdisco (see http://www.wandisco.com/subversion/download) After the upgrade, the patch command will still not run if the downloads of LLVM and Clang were done with the old version of svn. So the best thing is to upgrade svn before starting. Of course I did not know this at the time. I am sending this to save someone else the same trouble. Best wishes John

[Test][Thread] Regression since 9 December?

Boost build failure on master

I normally just compile and test Spirit/Fusion tests using the super project layout. That works fine; however, I'm setting up Bamboo build artifacts for all of Boost to enable slicker testing. As a result, I'm just trying to build all of Boost after a checkout. I admit that I've never found this to work properly. [thread] Timed waits in Boost.Thread potentially fundamentally broken on Windows (possibly rest of Boost too)

Dear all, CC: Stephan @ Microsoft - Stephan I'd love to know what the MSVC STL does below so we have the option of matching your behaviour. During investigating this bug report for Boost.Thread (https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/9856) I have discovered a very worrying situation: it would appear that potentially all timed waits in Boost.Thread, and potentially in other parts of Boost, are broken on Windows Vista and later and have been for some years. The problem is in correct handling of timeouts. If one does this: mutex mtx; condition_variable cond; unique_lock<mutex> lk(mtx); assert(cv_status::timeout == cond.wait_for(lk, chrono::seconds(1))); ... one would reasonably expect occasional failures on POSIX due to spurious wakeups. It turns out that this also spuriously fails on Windows, which is a surprise probably to many as Windows hides signal handling (actually APCs) inside its Win32 APIs and automatically restarts the operation after interruption. There is, therefore, the potential that quite a lot of code written to use Boost.Thread on Windows makes the hard assumption that the assert above will never fail. The reason why Windows spuriously fails above isn't due to spurious wakeups, it is in fact due to changes in the Vista kernel scheduler as documented at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2007.02.vistakernel.aspx. In essence, if you now ask Windows to go sleep for X milliseconds, Windows Vista onwards will in fact sleep for anywhere between zero and X+N milliseconds where N is some arbitrarily long value. In other words, timeouts in Windows are purely advisory, and are freely ignored by the Windows kernel from Vista onwards. Most of the time he tries to hit what you asked for, but you get no guarantees. More detail about how and why Windows Vista onwards does this can be found at http://forum.sysinternals.com/bug-in-waitable-timers_topic16229.html. This raises the question about what to do with Boost.Thread. We have the following options: Option 1: Timed waits are allowed to spuriously fail by the standard, so we mark this as wontfix and move on. Anyone using the predicate timed waits has never seen a problem here anyway. Option 2: We loop waiting until steady_clock (really QueryPerformanceCounter under Boost) shows the requested timeout has passed. Problem: This wastes battery power and generates needless wakeups. A more intelligent implementation would ask Windows for the thread quanta and transform timeouts to match the Vista kernel scheduler in combination with always using deadline scheduling, but this would slow down the timed waits implementation. Option 3: We adjust Boost.Thread to return timeouts when Windows returns a timed out status code, even if the actual time waited is considerably lower than the time requested. Problem: some code written for POSIX where when you ask for a timeout you always get it may misbehave in this situation. Boost commmunity, I turn it over to you for advice! Debugging optimisation unstable code - Stack and other tools

I am working to get the bugs out of Phoenix and have a situation where some tests are optimisation unstable - they run on Clang 3.5 with -O1 but not -O2 and on gcc 4.9.0 with -O0 but not -O1. The higher optimisation gives an erroneous return value. I am looking for tools to work with this. I have found one called Stack (http://css.csail.mit.edu/stack/) I have built it but it only has instructions for whole projects rather than individual tests. It is hard to search for because the word 'stack' has lots of other meanings. Has anyone else used this or any other tools to solve this sort of problem? It is worth noting that some of the tests run fine on develop testing. That leads me to wonder if the level of optimisation used there is documented anywhere. Thanks John

Best boost documentation

Hi, I’m preparing a library to be proposed and I’m adapting the documentation I had to be more Boost-like. I saw there is different writing styles in the documentation. Something I’m specially interested is in the document structure, I saw some start with a tutorial, others with an overview of the concepts, others just go straight to the internals. [config] [regression] Regression test failures due to compiler bugs -- your advice needed

Hi Everyone, I need the advice from the experts, on what is the recommended way to handle the following situation with regression tests. A number of tests of Boost.Optional fail. (see here: http://www.boost.org/development/tests/develop/developer/optional.html) These are the failures in optional<T&> (optional references), because quite a lot of compilers implement reference binding in a non-standard-conforming manner. (For details of these bugs see here: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/develop/libs/optional/doc/html/boost_optional… ). The question is, how these testing failures should be reflected in regression testing configuration, so that they do not appear as bugs in the implementation of Boost.Optional? 1. I hear that marking explicit failures is not recommended, and build config based on Boost.Config should be preferred. Also, the markup will not work because from the toolset name alone I cannot make the decision whether to mark the explicit failure or not. 2. On the other hand, I hear that Boost.config should not be used to detect any bug in a compiler that is relevant only to a single Boost library. These two pieces of advice appear contradictory in my case. I would like to abide to the recommendations in Boost, but in this case it appears that I am stuck. Is there any recommendation in such case for Boost developers? Regards, &rzej

Boost.Sort - new library documentation

Is there anything more that should be done to ensure that Boost.Sort new library documentation is added to the build system. It uses Quickbook, Doxygen and Autoindex. So does anything need adding to modular-boost\doc\Jamfile.v2 ? Perhaps, if I have understood this comment correctly: # Note that when refering to libraries that use auto-index we must process all the way to # docbook before including here. We must also ensure that auto-index uses it's own index # generation, otherwise we get one big index that's repeated in each library. Xslt's index # generation is also so slow that it's impractical for a build this large (takes ~ 9 hrs # to build with just 3 indexed libraries). Hence we refer to these libraries as for example: # # ../libs/interprocess/doc//standalone/<format>docbook then this needs adding ## Build the various generated docs (Doxygen and QuickBook)... <dependency>../libs/sort/doc//standalone/<format>docbook ## Add path references to the QuickBook generated docs... <implicit-dependency>../libs/sort/doc//standalone/<format>docbook but I am not clear if this is right, so I am not providing a pull request.
