[GTL] operator syntax proposal checked into sandbox

I have completed initial implementation of the operator based syntax I proposed for polygon set operations (Booleans) and hooked up the actual algorithms and data structures to that API. You can see the complete pattern in the sandbox: http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/browser/sandbox/gtl/gtl The operator&() declaration now looks like this: template <typename geometry_type_1, typename geometry_type_2> polygon_set_view<typename geometry_type_1::operator_arg_type, typename geometry_type_2::operator_arg_type, boolean_op::BinaryAnd, typename geometry_type_1::operator_storage_tag, typename geometry_type_2::operator_storage_tag> operator&(const geometry_type_1& lvalue, const geometry_type_2& rvalue) { return polygon_set_view<geometry_type_1, geometry_type_2, boolean_op::BinaryAnd, typename geometry_type_1::operator_storage_tag, typename geometry_type_2::operator_storage_tag> (lvalue, rvalue, polygon_set_traits<geometry_type_1>::orient(lvalue), boolean_op::BinaryAnd()); } In explanation of what is going on, the polygon_set_view just takes a const ref of each of its arguments and performs the actual algorithm only when its member function is called asking for the result, which it returns by reference because the view has a member to store the result of the algorithm. This has the nice side benefit of eliminating an unnecessary copy that would normally occur if the operator function returned the result of the algorithm by value (which could be very large.) An interesting feature of this design is that the polygon_set_view can accept an polygon_set_view in its geometry type template parameters leading to recursive template instantiation. You can see that in the test case below where the template instantiation recursion depth is equal to the number of chained operator calls made in a single statement. The drawback of the design is that I'll need to overload the operator functions to allow the user to register their own data types as operator arguments since the user geometry type can't be expected to provide a typedef for operator_arg_type. The overloaded operator would use a metafunction that registers the user type as an operator_arg_type. This leads to four declarations for each operator since either or both arguments can be of one flavor or the other. If you drop this miniature test into a cpp and compile against the gtl header files you should see that the compiler handles things nicely. This leads to a very convenient ability to produce polymorphism of generic geometry types. There are still a few more algorithms that need to be hooked up before the prototype of the re-implemented library is complete, but I wanted to ask for feedback now so that I can get early course correcting advice. I love the bar at the top of http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/libraries.htm because it makes the getting_started guide and other obvious destinations readily accessible. However, I don't see anything like that at http://boost.org. I would think, at the very least, "Get Boost" should take people to something that /links/ to the getting started guide. random access file iterators ?

Does anyone know about an implementation of a "random access file iterator"? I.e. an iterator that will allow to access a file via an iterator interface? I know istream and outstream iterators, but these are only output resp. input iterators. I am looking for something that will allow random access too. [units] failures in tests and untested non-SI code

I realize that the Units libary is still a work-in-progress, but I thought you might like to know about these failures. Using 1.35.0 with the latest Units code (SVN rev. 45355) and using GCC 4.1.2, I get these failures in test/: test_limits, test_cmath The exact compilation errors are in the file attached. Also, I cannot compile this simple test code. Hi list, I'd like to bring to your attention ticket #1470 (http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/1470) which seems to have been missed for v1.35.0, maybe because I set the milestone to "TBD". The patch (http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/attachment/ticket/1470/BTL-calling-conv.diff) fixes compilation problems for Boost.Thread when the compiler's default calling convention is not __cdecl (seen on Win32, VC9 with /Gz option). Note that r43847 already contained a small fraction of that fix -- but only for the prototype of on_thread_exit, not for its implementation or for the other functions (on_thread_enter, and their on_process_* counterparts). [GTL] redesign checked into sandbox

I checked a gtl project into the sandbox so that I can keep postings to the list more brief while allowing people to see the up to date and correctly compiling state of the re-design and re-implementation of the library interfaces. The main header file is gtl.h, which includes the others and defines free functions that may rely on any of the geometry concepts when instantiating the template function. A recent change is to the design is that rather than using SFINAE to overload a free function on return type I now call a meta-function that looks up from the related concept and provides the correct return type based upon the args given (see get() in gtl.h). This eliminates the need to register the return type in a specialized traits class since the concept can provide it for the given type generically. [Boost][ProgramOptions] Interest in a CGI parameters parser?

Hello, Yesterday I had to write a program that compiles 2 forms of executables: a standalone version that takes its parameters from the command line, and another one that serves as a CGI program and thus takes exactly the same parameters but from stdin (POST method). I naturally chose Boost.ProgramOptions for the first one, and did the job by myself for the second one. I finally realized that I was doing fundamentally the same thing as what a ProgramOptions parser basically does: parsing a name=value series of variables, checking unknown values, assign them to variables, etc... plus a few formatting work to handle URL format specificities. So in the end I was wondering if a "cgi_query_parser" would be appreciated as an addition to the parsers already present in Boost.ProgramOptions? I can directly see the benefits inside my own program since the 2 versions would only differ on one line of code. >From a more general point of view, it could be a simple way to have a CGI support somewhere in Boost. If such a thing can be interesting, I can take a few time to implement it. Regards Bruno

Did anything ever come of this? I've been searching through all the list postings on this, dating back to 2000, and it doesn't look like this library ever made it into boost proper. It's exactly what I've been looking for, and I would really like to use it in my work, but I can't justify that if it's not an official part of boost. I also would hate to reinvent this particular wheel. Please could someone get this moving again? Also, where would I now find the version of this code that was put up for review?
