I think what I'll want to do, for a first cut, is always produce 64-bit literals for 64-bit capable compilers. I'm going to wait until after the review period to start on fixing the 64-bit support. Since I don't have a local 64-bit compiler I'll be working blind and my first few efforts will be dead wrong. At an initial glance it looks like 64-bit support should be achievable without heroic efforts. But it certainly won't come along for free. Thanks again Reece. Scott Schurr

Futures

Hi, I uploaded a new version of the futures library to the boost vault. http://tinyurl.com/9lws4 Just a remainder, futures execute functions in separate threads. Later the future can be used to retrieve the result of the function. The major change is the addition of iterators over futures. Last time some people complained during the discussion that there were operators missing which they needed for combining futures. So instead of adding more operators I added iterators which can be used to implement almost any combination of futures. simple_future<int> f1 = bind(fac, 4); simple_future<int> f1 = bind(fac, 6); simple_future<int> f1 = bind(fac, 8); future<int> f = f1 || f2 || f3; for(future<int>::iterator it = f.begin(); f.end() != it; ++it){ cout << *it << endl; // prints fac(4), fac(6) and fac(8) if(*it > XXX) break; } That way, you can wait for as many futures to finish as you want and you can decide while waiting, for how many you want to wait. I've seen errors like this that were removed by changing all of the literals in the file to unsigned by appending a 'u'. I suspect that there's a problem with the size of the literals on the 64-bit compilers. Does one declare a 64-bit literal by appending a double L ('LL')? If so, then I'll give that a try. Thanks. [quickbook] chapters and sections

Hi, I just realized that quickbook does not have chapters! Looking at the boostbook.xml output, I see many chapters. In quickbook, a whole qbk is regarded as one whole chapter. I was wondering why we were generating a 2 level deep hierarchy of html pages. Deeper than that, the sub- sections are placed within it's parent section's html page. With chapters, we have more structure. Fortunately, this is easy to fix. I can easily add a [chapter title], [endchapter] markup built on top of the section mechanism. Actually, I can even do this without necessitating syntax change by simply assuming the outermost [section] as chapters. Your thoughts? [Bug][Tools] Incomplete tool documentation, especially for building

[This is for the versions at <http://www.boost.org>.] [I don't know if this should/could be placed in the Bug Tracker.] While answering a post about BCP on another list, I noticed that the docs for BCP (at <http://www.boost.org/tools/bcp/bcp.html>) never actually say where one would get BCP from! Looking at my local archive, I see the BCP source files are in the same directory as the BCP doc file. I noticed that they are C++ code; I suspected that BCP could have been a (Python) script or (if I didn't respond to a question asking why not) pre-made executables. I feel that the BCP docs should explain how to get BCP. In fact the QuickBook and Wave tools have the same problem. (The source for both is C++-based and in different subdirectories in the "tools" directory, but the docs never tell you that!) The other tools (build, regression, inspect, and BoostBook) do have building directions, but they're either indirectly linked or plainly presented. QuickBook has another problem in that it has no table of contents. I thought the docs were severely incomplete until I finally saw the little right arrow symbols at the two right-side corners. Nor did I know how big the QB docs were until I had to traverse every page through a chain of right arrow links. The Wave-tool docs have a different additional problem in that it's mixed in the Wave-library docs. The traversal symbols on that page shouldn't be followed since they can't help with the tool (just with Wave-library).
