The performance difference between a 16-bit integer and 32-bit integer on a PDP-11 was pretty significant. The reason long didn't become the 64-bit type is that most commercial C compiler vendors wanted to continue to support code their customers had written that assumed long was exactly four eight-bit bytes. You can argue as long as you like that the problem is in that code (and I would agree with you). [parameter] little flaw in tutorial

Hello, the example code in the Boost.Parameter tutorial #includes <boost/parameter/keyword.hpp> as only Boost.Parameter header. This is apparently insufficient, since I get errors regarding incomplete types (e.g. return type `struct boost::parameter::aux::tagged_argument<graphs::tag::index_map, const char[13]>' is incomplete ). [serialization]Thread-safety of serialization lib

There are many places in serialization library that use a pattern like the following: static oserializer & instantiate(){ static oserializer instance; return instance; } AFAIK, not all compilers guarantee the initialization of a function level (or class member level) static variable is thread-safe. If I understand the code correctly, this essentially means that simultaneously serializing objects of the same type is not thread-safe. Am I missing something here? Thanks, Sean

compiler error with Spirit: wrong internal use of regex library

Hello, when using the regular expression parser with the Spirit library, I get the following compilation error (I've edited the g++-output somewhat): g++ -c -o TestSpirit.o -ansi -g -Iboost-1_33/include/boost-1_33/ TestSpirit.cpp In file included from boost-1_33/include/boost-1_33/boost/spirit/utility/regex.hpp:46, boost-1_33/include/boost-1_33/boost/spirit/utility/impl/regex.ipp:65: error: wrong number of template arguments (1, should be 2) Command exited with non-zero status 1 I edited the file boost-1_33/include/boost-1_33/boost/spirit/utility/impl/regex.ipp, replacing line 65 boost::reg_expression<CharT> rxstr; // regular expression to match with boost::basic_regex<CharT> rxstr; // regular expression to match , and now it seems to work (at least my application). So I guess the Spirit library needs to be updated (according to the new regex-library standard). Oliver P.S. I tried it out with g++ 3.4.3 and 4.0.1, but it doesn't matter.

a question about scoped_ptr and checked_delete

As I understand, checked_delete is being used by scoped_ptr to prevent deletion of incomplete type. However, this very simple program is accepted by MSVC6, MSVC71 and MinGW (GCC) 3.4.4, even though implicit destructor of A is deleting incomplete class A::impl . Only one compiler of these that I could test (Comeau 4.3.3) throws compilation error. Could we do better? I know, there are simple workaround - declare destructor in class A or use shared_ptr . But as we know, workarounds in user code to generate compilation error (not suppress them) are rare thing. Personally I think they're more important than the debug-mode failures, since it's possible to configure GCC so that concept-checks are enabled by default, making parts of Boost unusable. But debug mode is always off by default. jon
