Naming issues are always interesting. You could always use 'attention' when you want the guard to pay attention and 'at_ease' when you want it to remember its commands but not act upon them. 'dismiss' would then mean go have your coffee and be more permanent. joe

BOOST_ASSERT and __assume on MSVC

Hi All, Have you considered modifying BOOST_ASSERT to use __assume on MSVC? Briefly speaking __assume(expr) is a hint for optimizer that 'expr' evaluates to nonzero. It can help optimize the code. Standalone use of __assume is not recommended because compiler does not check if the assumption is correct, and if it isn't the program is ill formed. But it fits perfectly in ASSERT macro. This way putting many ASSERTs will not only help to verify the code - it will also help the optimizer. Wow! To be sure I did a small test with MSVC: int f(int n) { // __assume(n == 0); if (n == 1) return 1; else return 0; } produces: xor eax, eax cmp DWORD PTR _n$[esp-4], 1 sete al ret 0 with __assume uncommented: xor eax, eax ret 0 And the comparison is gone. [any] documentation is not up-to-date

The any_cast documentation ( http://www.boost.org/doc/html/any_cast.html ) doesn't reflect latest changes in any.hpp. Now it's legal to get direct access to any's content using any_cast<ValueType&> syntax. New overload should be added: template<typename T> T any_cast(any & operand); All occurrences of ValueType in the overload template<typename ValueType> ValueType any_cast(const any & operand); should be replaced with T (where T is either ValueType or a reference to ValueType). In section "Returns" replace If passed a value or reference, it returns a copy of the value content if successful. with If passed a value or reference, it returns held value if successful. If T is ValueType, it returns a copy of the held value, otherwise, if T is a (possibly const qualified) reference to ValueType, it returns a reference to the held value. In section "Throws" replace "the overload taking an any value" with "overloads taking an any value" Section "Rationale" should be removed. -- Alexander Nasonov
