Defining compilers suggestion

It would be much easier, and less confusing, when looking at compiler workarounds in Boost code if their were defines for various compilers/versions in a configuratiion header file such as: #define BOOST_COMPILER_SOME_COMPILER_LOWER (PREPROCESSOR_TAG >= nnnn) #define BOOST_COMPILER_SOME_COMPILER_UPPER (PREPROCESSOR_TAG <= nnnn) #define BOOST_COMPILER_SOME_COMPILER (BOOST_COMPILER_SOME_COMPILER_LOWER && BOOST_COMPILER_SOME_COMPILER_UPPER) where SOME_COMPILER might be VC71,GCC40 etc. Then in code one could see: #if defined(BOOST_COMPILER_VC71) etc. rather than the less understandable #if defined(MSC_VER == nnnn) etc. I would just like to see more readability in the Boost code regarding compiler workarounds. I am also aware their is a workaround macro, but even that deals in compiler preprocessor tags rather than a more readable compiler version. I am aware that many workarounds have to deal with versions before or after a certain version number but even that can be made more readable by macros which tell one the actual compiler which is involved. I realize I am just a reader of Boost code and not a Boost developer but I think this suggestion would make for a little more readable code in its own small way.

Hi, I'm trying to deserialize objects from an xml archive containing some gregorian dates. Using VC7.1 I get the linker error: serialization.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "enum boost::date_time::special_values __cdecl boost::gregorian::special_value_from_string(class std::basic_string<char,struct std::char_traits<char>,class std::allocator<char> > const &)" (?special_value_from_string@gregorian@boost@@YA?AW4special_values@date_time@2@AB V?$basic_string@DU?$char_traits@D@std@@V?$allocator@D@2@@std@@@Z) referenced in function __catch$??$load@Vxml_wiarchive@archive@boost@@@serialization@boost@@YAXAAVxml_wi archive@archive@1@AAVdate@gregorian@1@I@Z$0 Any ideas what's causing this? [filesystem] operations failues on gcc-3_4_4-cygwin

I inadvertently upgraded my cygwin installation this morning to what __VERSION__ reports as "3.4.4 (cygming special) (gdc 0.12, using dmd 0.125)". The good news is that two freshly added dll tests which had been failing under gcc/cygwin 3.3.3 pass under 3.4.4. The bad news is that even though operations_test_dll is passing, statically linked operations_test fails. The reason for the static link failures is that the Windows function ::GetLastError() is returning 0 after several critical functions return error indications. I'm guessing from the "cygming" name that mingw is being used, and is the cause of the problem. Why the same problem doesn't appear when dynamically linking is unclear to me. My initial reaction is just to note the problem in the docs and move on. It seems to close to release to try workarounds, which would have to be very carefully done. Any other ideas? --Beman

A solution is to add a conversion operator to a type that can be used in Boolean contexts, but as little else as possible. [date_time] day_of_week function

date_time::date::day_of_week() calls two functions from the calendar template parameter: the first to convert the internal integer representation into a ymd_type, and the second to calculate the day_of_week for this ymd_type. Both do some non-trivial arithmetic. I wonder why the following simpler and more efficient approach is not used. In date_time::date: day_of_week_type day_of_week() const { return calendar::day_of_week(days_); } In date_time::gregorian_calendar_base add a method: static unsigned short day_of_week(const date_int_type& d) { return (d + 1) % 7; } As far as I know, the sequence of weeks in the gregorian calendar is completely regular and this simple calculation is correct. This approach would also not limit flexibility of the date template. If for another calendar there is some irregularity, we could for this calendar implement static unsigned short day_of_week(const date_int_type& d) { return day_of_week(from_day_number(d)); } Is there any problem in this reasoning? static templates in BOOST

We recently corrected the way our compiler (Sun C++) handles static templates, and ran into a problem with some BOOST code. More than 100 tests in the suite depend on code like this: template <typename T> struct S { void foo(int); }; template<class T , class U> static // static template ... void smart_cast_reference(U& u) {} template <typename T> void S<T>::foo(int c) { smart_cast_reference< T& >(c); // used in global function } int main() { S<int> s; s.foo(1); } You can't use a static template in a global template function because it violates the One-Definition Rule, among possibly other rules. I have found that other compilers accept this code, but reject it when you put them in standard-conformning mode. (To see the rejection with some compilers, you need to build the executable.)
