To spice up the networking discussion, let me announce a new version of my networking experiment, the socketstream library. The home-page is here: http://socketstream.sourceforge.net/ It's not up to date yet, but the doxygen documentation is nearly current. The SourceForge page is here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/socketstream/ The Subversion repository is here: https://mndfck.org/svn/sockestream/ In particular, here are some example client projects of the library: https://mndfck.org/svn/socketstream/trunk/example/ The bug pointed out in this list in the time server was corrected. ;) Two new examples were added last time I mentioned this library here, an extremely simple http client, and a very simple irc client library with it's own example application. The irc client library makes use of the boost::signals library, and soon I'll have a reworked version of the irc::message class that uses boost::spirit to parse messages from istreambuf_iterator's. There are some weird bugs yet to solve, but it works enough to play around. I'm planning to eventually make a "boost" version of the library as an excuse to study the Boost.Build system. -- Pedro Lamarão

Functional Programming in C++ Interest

Hi, I got this email from Jim Grundy. I thought I'd like to share this with you as I am also interested in what others might say. Here's Jim's email: <quote> I'm interested in learning about applications of declarative programming paradigms - particularly, but not exclusively, the functional paradigm - within the C++ programming community. I'm interested in part because I'm a member of the program committee for the CUFP (Commercial Users of Functional Programming) 2005 workshop. You can learn more about the workshop here: http://www.galois.com/cufp/ The CUFP workshop is co-located with the ICFP conference, but differs in that it is less formal venue and in that it focuses on the pragmatics of applications of functional programming rather less than on theory and or the study of the paradigm and the languages that support it themselves. The workshop has a broad area of interest. Although the "C" stands for commercial, its the applications aspect that is important. Open source applications, commercial or otherwise, are also of interest. The PC members for CUFP are probably most strongly associated with strongly typed higher-order functional languages, like ML, OCaml and Haskell, but we are interested in applications of the functional paradigm in any language. In particular, projects that make use of the functional paradigm (or other declarative paradigms, say via the LC++ library) in C++ would be of interest to us. <<I do not know what LC++ is, perhaps Jim meant FC++?>> I've learned a little about a variety of libraries available for functional programming in C++, notably the Lambda and Phoenix libraries available in boost. I would like to learn more about what applications are out there that use these or similar libraries in order to leverage the functional paradigm. Is functional programming generally useful within the context of C++ application development, or is it likely to be a niche technique? Are "regular" C++ programmers making use of the paradigm, or is this guru territory only? Is this paradigm actually used in end user applications directly, or is it to be found only inside other general purpose libraries like XR and Spirit (two of the the places where I have seen the paradigm applied in C++). Any thoughts appreciated. </quote> As a library writer, I guess Doug Gregor's comment a few years ago sums it all up: About functional libraries in C++: They're gaining acceptance, but are somewhat stunted by the ubiquitousness of broken compilers. The C++ community is moving deeper into the so-called "STL-style" programming paradigm, which brings many aspects of functional programming into the fold. Look at, for instance, the Spirit parser to see how such function objects can be used to build Yacc-like grammars with semantic actions that can build abstract syntax trees on the fly. This type of functional composition is gaining momentum (there are often questions about it on comp.lang.c++.moderated and comp.std.c++). Thoughts? Anyone? Reading the latest SR1 proposal to C++ standard, explained in recent article by some Google corporate entity, I could not but feel sad: Here we have corporate advertisers, pretending to be open source developers, defending half-assed, miniscule additions to C++ standards as a big improvenent. Shame to Google and Boost and C++ standards commitee. IMO, you deserve as much respect as Microsoft corporate develpoers. Tony

This small patch fixes the order of initialization of members and adds missing entries. Entering libs/thread/test/ and calling bjam didn't produce errors; but I didn't see anything running. fstream_test.cpp won't compile using VC++ 6.0

I receive errors when I try to compile fstream_test.cpp using Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0. The first error I receive is this: fstream_test.cpp c:\boost\include\boost-1_32\boost\filesystem\fstream.hpp(29): error C2504: 'basic_filebuf<char,char_traits<char> >': base class undefined c:\projects\examples\fstream_test.cpp(27): see reference to class template instantiation 'boost::filesystem::basic_filebuf<char,char_traits<char> >' being compiled Is there a workaround for this? Functional Programming in C++ Interest

Hi, I got this email from Jim Grundy. I thought I'd like to share this with you as I am also interested in what others might say. Here's Jim's email: <quote> I'm interested in learning about applications of declarative programming paradigms - particularly, but not exclusively, the functional paradigm - within the C++ programming community. I'm interested in part because I'm a member of the program committee for the CUFP (Commercial Users of Functional Programming) 2005 workshop. You can learn more about the workshop here: http://www.galois.com/cufp/ The CUFP workshop is co-located with the ICFP conference, but differs in that it is less formal venue and in that it focuses on the pragmatics of applications of functional programming rather less than on theory and or the study of the paradigm and the languages that support it themselves. Open source applications, commercial or otherwise, are also of interest. The PC members for CUFP are probably most strongly associated with strongly typed higher-order functional languages, like ML, OCaml and Haskell, but we are interested in applications of the functional paradigm in any language. Are "regular" C++ programmers making use of the paradigm, or is this guru territory only? Is this paradigm actually used in end user applications directly, or is it to be found only inside other general purpose libraries like XR and Spirit (two of the the places where I have seen the paradigm applied in C++). The C++ community is moving deeper into the so-called "STL-style" programming paradigm, which brings many aspects of functional programming into the fold. Look at, for instance, the Spirit parser to see how such function objects can be used to build Yacc-like grammars with semantic actions that can build abstract syntax trees on the fly.
