The right page would be the current boost documentation pages. 2) This "Navigator" would be automatically generated from the Boost.Book xml files using XSLT or some other appropriate tool. This would have the following advantages. 1) Usage of this "Navigator" would be optional. Lots of times its interesting to send a page without the frame. Searching through pages without the "Navigator" would be the same as it now - tedious but relieable. 2) it would be "free". The contents/index would be automatically generated without my having to go through another layer of documentation and preparing an index by hand. Those using boost book would get a complete index while old documentation would have just an entry into the top level. 3) it would provide much incentive for boost authors to move their documentation over to boost.book Boost.book might have to add a little bit to support this. While I'm on the subject of Boost.book. I would hope that the formatting is in a .css so that I might replace it with my preferred look and feel. (I prefer the "classic" one). I believe this would resolve the essentially irresolvable about esthetics. Robert Ramey

shared_ptr question

Im very new to boost, and have just started to intergrate the shared_ptr smart pointer into one of my applications. I am storing a lot of pointers (to objects) in a std::vector. typedef boost::shared_ptr<CMyClass> my_shared_ptr; typedef std::vector<my_shared_ptr> my_shared_ptr_vector; What i need to do is to additionally store a reference to the same objects (in the vector) in a CListCtrl (MFC). The CListCtrl allows you to associate a pointer with each item (row) in the list control. Before i used shared_ptr i used to add the data as below: CMyClass pItem = new CMyClass(); my_vector->push_back(pItem); CListCtrl::SetItemData->SetItemData(iItemNumber, (DWORD)pItem); Now using shared_ptr (see below) i get a compiler error saying that it cannot convert from my_shared_ptr to DWORD. my_shared_ptr myPtr (new CMyClass(); my_shared_ptr_vector->push_back(myPtr); CListCtrl::SetItemData->SetItemData(iItemNumber, reinterpret_cast<DWORD_PTR>(myPtr)); My second question is if i was able to add the item data as ... CListCtrl::SetItemData->SetItemData(iItemNumber, reinterpret_cast<DWORD_PTR>(myPtr)); ...would the internal reference counter be incremented in shared_ptr? My vector may be destroyed before my CListCtrl and I dont want the item data to be deleted until both are out of scope. Thanks Andy

[tokenizer] default tokenizer function

The current CVS still has char_delimiter_separator as default tokenizer function, while documentation says that class is deprecated. Any chance this will be fixed? It's very weird, and I'd also prefer escaped_list_separator to be default. (I know string_algo has splitter too, but for now it does not work on all compilers where program_options work -- for example, borland and intel 7.1) - Volodya

Howard, Thank you for your time to get the spec. together. A must to move forward. A few comments. 1. explicit scoped_lock(mutex_type& m); 2. scoped_lock(mutex_type& m, locking_enum lock_it); 3. scoped_lock(mutex_type& m, blocking_enum block_it); 4. scoped_lock(mutex_type& m, const elapsed_time& elps_time); Do we need (3)? Isn't is covered by (4) with elps_time = INFINITE (blocking) and - 0 (non blocking)? If it is intended as a "convenience" interface, my expectation would be that average users would use thin and more explicit wrappers around the general lock. Like try_lock and timed_lock. Then, those thin wrappers would address the "convenience" issue better. (1) and (2) overlap as (1) is (2) with lock_it = true. Does not it mean that some functionality will have to be duplicated in (1) and (2)? How about avoiding the overlap with 1. explicit scoped_lock(mutex_type& m); 2. scoped_lock(mutex_type& m, deferred_t); Then, every constructor would do just one thing. My 2c. Spirit: Some more regressions

Hi, The CVS (Boost) state for Spirit is very good. However, there are still some few regressions remaining. I do not understand some of the reports on compilers that I do not have access to. I wonder if some of you guys can help out. I'd appreciate that a lot. Help might mean as simple as peeking into the reports and forming an educated guess. Ah, yes, intel- win32- 7.1- vc6- stlport- 4.5.3 has runtime failures (e.g. http://tinyurl.com/4tfq6) Hartmut diagnosed these: <q> These two are easy. The reason for these errors comes from the fact, that the STLPort library is compiled independently from the test application and the command line options, which define, whether the wchar_t is an intrinsic type or not are different for the two compilation units. As a result the wrong std::numeric_limits specialisation gets picked during the compilation of the test program, which at runtime leads to the failed assertion. For a long time it wasn't possible to detect from inside a program (while compiled with the Intel on the Windows platfrom), whether it is compiled with wchar_t as an intrinsic time or not (for the Intel V8 this fact fixed recently), so I don't see a way to fix the problems right now </q> Any ideas, anyone?
