Enums: naming question?

Hi, I'm developing a scoped enum library that use an emulation wrapping the native enum on a class to get scoped enumerators. I need some traits, to get the native type from the emulation, and the coping class from the native one. In addition there is an underlying type that is used to store the enumerators. Next follows the names I have use in the library: native_type::type underlying_type::type scoping_type::type In addition I have defined some functions that make the conversions from these types template native_type::type native_value(ScopedEnum e); template underlying_type::type underlying_value(ScopedEnum e); I have defined all these under the boost::enums namespace. Do you have a better proposal for these (meta-)functions? The timer object is local to the wrapper function, but the io_service is not, it is passed in, so it seems the io_service is holding onto the timer completion handler AND the fact that it was cancelled. Hi, all I have posted the similar one, but no reply. [Serialization] Segfaults and exceptions on 32bit Linux with Boost 1.46

Hi, I'm having trouble using Boost.Serialization on a 32bit Linux machine. I have opened a ticket https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/5212 Has anyone experienced anything similar? I cannot pinpoint what is the problem exactly so I can provide a patch. Thanks

i'm excited to present you a technique which i occasionally invented shared pointers are very good helpers they help us to manage dynamically allocated memory however it seems so natural i have never seen so far that one be allowed to delete shared pointer like this: shared_ptr<int> p = new int, q = p; delete p; assert(!p); //neither assertion fires assert(q); in fact the technique is rather trivial provide a distinct class like this: template<typename type> struct deleter : shared_ptr_base<type> { void operator delete(void *p) { reinterpret_cast<ptr_base*>(p)->detach(); } }; and let the 'operator unspecified_type_convertible_to_bool()' return statically casted address of the ptr instance itself (or NULL) like this: template<typename type> inline shared_ptr<type>::operator const deleter<type>*() const { if (!data) return 0; const shared_ptr_base<type> *base = this; return static_cast<const safe_deleter<type>*>(base); //oops! a little hack... } minimum changes are needed to the existing library sources this way the example above works perfectly codepad.org is down so i just attached a toy programm with an implementation of this technique (works at least in msvc10) -- Pavel P.S. if you notice a grammar mistake or weird phrasing in my message please point it out

How do you test complex transformations?

Hi, I know that my question is not directly associated to Boost, but it could be interesting to share the best techniques so we can improve the test of some Boost libraries, existing or future. A transformation complex is complex if I can not associate mentally the output associated to a given input. Think for example on dividing two bit integers. One technique could be to make the transformation by hand and keep track of the input -> output association. Another technique consist in re-implementing the algorithm and check that both implementations match. Do you know other techniques? Does some Boost libraries have such a kind of transformations? How they are tested? Boost.Chain over at Github

Hi everyone, I just wanted to give a heads up to say that I'm actually now trying to get the Boost.Chain idea a little more weight by defining the interface of the type -- as you might remember, "chain" was pretty much the immutable string. I wanted to point those interested over to the Git repository and project page over on Github (https://github.com/mikhailberis/chain) and either watch the repository or submit pull requests if you fancy filling in some of the blanks there. At this time I'm pretty much stubbing out the implementation while trying to define a suitable interface from the start. The idea is that I would like to build this incrementally from the chains::builder type which will mostly do the linked data structure for doing a segmented string data type, and then a chains::chain which would act as a proxy. The chains::view (to be defined) will pretty much encapsulate an encoding tag (to determine the encoding/decoding policy/implementation statically) that will enable the encoded viewing of the data in the chain. The plumbing (which could very well be the more interesting part of the implementation) is still up in the air, but I'm thinking about doing an intrusive list of blocks, each block having metadata fields that indicate the size of the block (runtime defined, depending on the page size to ensure page-aligned addresses), a pointer to the block, and a reference count. I'm still thinking about making the reference count for the blocks be hosted in a block manager that maps the block's address to a reference count that's atomically incremented/decremented instead of making the reference count field be part of the actual block. Reason for this is so that touching the reference counts will not mark the page on which the actual data block is stored to be marked as "dirty", avoiding cache coherency issues on shared pages/cache-lines across multiple processors. A possible GSOC 2011 proposal idea

Hello Community! Before I write up my proposal, I wish to solicit the community response regarding the integration of an linear programming (LP) solver into Boost. An LP solver is library designed to solve LP problems. An LP problem is any problem of the form max sum(a_i x_i, 0 <= i <= m) subject to: sum(b_ij x_i, 0 <= i <= m) <= c_j, 0 <= j <= n x_i >= 0, 0<= i <= m where m is the number of variables and n is the number of constraints that define the problem. The constants are a_i, b_ij, and c_j; the variables are x_i A concrete example is the following: max 5x_1+2x_2 subject to: 2x_1 + 3x_2 <= 5 x_1 + 5x_2 <= 10 x_1 >= 0, x_2 >= 0 It is the objective of the LP solver to find a pair (x_1, x_2) such that 5x_1 + 2x_2 is maximum (this is unique) and that satisfies the constraints. In order to do this, I will implement the two major algorithms designed to solve these problems: the simplex algorithm and (possibly) Karmakar's algorithm. Furthermore, a programmatic interface and file parsing interface using Boost.Spirit will also be implemented. A second type of LP problem is where we require all the variables to be integers. Such an LP is called an integer programming problem, or ILP. We first note that solving ILP's is NP complete, therefore, there seems to be no efficient way to solve these kinds of problems. Nevertheless, algorithms have been developed to solve them and in practice, perform well. In particular, the cutting plane and branch and bound methods will be implemented. But why should we care about LP problems? The answer is that MANY problems in optimization can be reduced to solving an LP. A list of problems with polynomial time reductions to LP's include: * Scheduling problems * Knapsack problems, including their multi-dimensional variants * Allocation of resources * Covering/Packing problems * Cutting Stock problems and many others. Even the shortest path problem from graph theory can be phrased as an ILP (although one would never do this). If the community is interested in such a project, I have a minimalistic LP solver already written. I just need to "boostify" it and I'll upload within the next week. [asio] timer cancelling

boost 1.45.0 WinXP SP3 What is the difference between boost::deadline_timer.cancel() and the cancellation that happens due to boost::deadline_timer.expires_from_now()? I'm doing an async_read_some() inside of a wrapper function I have written (based on http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2007/04/120339.php) I have a read handler and a timer handler (I want the bytes read value and could probably combine the two handlers into one with the appropriate modification to the bind call). The read handler works, and then I cancel the timer, but the NEXT TIME I call the wrapper function, the timer hander fires with a boost::asio::error::operation_aborted. The timer object is local to the wrapper function, but the io_service is not, it is passed in, so it seems the io_service is holding onto the timer completion handler AND the fact that it was cancelled. Is there a way to clean this out before exiting my wrapper function? Is the 'expires_from_now()' calling the timer handler or is it the first call to run_one()? Thanks, -- Robert G.
