[uuids] generating uuids from multiple threads

I currently have a shared boost::uuids::basic_uuid_generator<boost::mt19937> which I protect by a boost::mutex when I generate a new uuid. The code looks something like: std::wstring GetUniqueName() { boost::uuids::uuid uniqueId; { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lock( my_mutex ); uniqueId = my_generator(); } return boost::lexical_cast<std::wstring>( uniqueId ); } For one thing this is yet another case where I used a default constructor on a uuid during natural coding and expected it to be cheap but I digress. Do I have to protect the shared generator with a mutex? Should I even be using a shared generator or should I be constructing it on the stack in this function? I don't expect this to be called very often (twice total in our current application) but I want to make sure it is bullet proof since it can potentially be called concurrently. -- Michael Marcin

[mp_int] Patch for deallocate(NULL)

In the version of mp_math posted to the vault in Oct 2008 there are several calls to std::allocator::deallocate where the argument pointer can be NULL. This is not compliant with the C++ standard, which states "p must not be null" (Table 6 in 20.1.5 in the Draft Standard that I have access to). Sure enough, when p is null, I get a segmentation fault (using GCC 3.2.3). Attached is a patch with a fix. -- Nathan

Half-Sync/Half-Async pattern in Boost

I was looking for library that would help me implement the Half-Sync/Half-Async pattern. I see that Boost has some of the pieces that I need but I do not a intra-process message queue. I did not see this in the Vault or the Sandbox, is this available? Thanks, Jon

[bind] virtual function pointer woes

Imagine I have a base class B with a virtual function f() that is overridden in a derived class D ... struct B { virtual void f() { std::printf("B\n"); } }; struct D : B { virtual void f() { std::printf("D\n"); } }; Now, I can have a derived object D and call the base member directly using qualification: D d; d.B::f(); // OK, called B::f But if I take the address of B::f for use with boost::bind, I get a thunk that always uses virtual dispatch... boost::bind( &B::f, _1 )( d ); // Hrm, calls D::f What if I don't want the virtual dispatch, and I really want this to behave like d.B::f()? I know this is not specifically a problem with boost::bind, but a more general property of (virtual) member function pointers. Someone correct me if I'm doing it wrong, but for example the RTTI-less and typeid-less configurations of Boost Exception, the library I'm maintaining, are tested only by me on my own computer, and I'm only testing them with MSVC and a single version of linux/gcc. Shouldn't the automatic trunk/release tests handle these, as well as other supported configurations?
