Hi, Upon trying to create the new shifted_allocator class that is to be passed as a template parameter on STL containers, I got stuck in a circle or errors. It turns out there was no way to replace internal pointers used by containers with smart pointers... which is very unfortunate. There are different solution I could take but hopefully I won't need them. By trying compiling shifted_ptr_test2.cpp in the Sandbox we'll get the following errors. [date-time][threads] Integrating C++0x clocks, time points, and durations into Boost?

A slightly updated version of http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2008/n2615.html was accepted at the C++ committee meeting last week. It provides clocks, time points, and time durations for the C++0x standard library, and slightly modifies the threads interface already voted into C++0x to use these features. The only change in the version of the proposal actually voted in, IIRC, was to leave identity alone. The final document will appear in the post-meeting mailing in about two weeks. Although these clock and time features evolved from Boost Date-Time, the actual realization is quite different. So we've got a transition that has to be managed. I'd personally like to see that transition occur quickly, both because Boost.Threads depends on these features, and because I can now bring forward an improved Boost.Timer based on these features. One suggestion is for Boost to provide an implementation of the headers to be added to C++0x, and then to use those headers in the various Boost libraries that need them. But I haven't thought it out in any detail. How should we proceed? Comments? Ideas? Suggestions? --Beman

The current code is not really modular so I propose the following new/modified features: we have a defenition for "cipher" that is "some thing" that encrypts/decrypts message within a stream. How to use GIL effectively with boost::fusion or boost::function or any of the other cool generic libraries on boost.

One thing you can do to make Gil algorithms more generic and usable with boost::fusion or boost function is to wrap them like below into generic functors. Grouping your drawing algorithims like the following examples allow you to create really powerful generic drawing algorithms. See example below. You have to follow each step. I've used this technique to good effect and I"m thinking about writing an article about this. FYI, I just merged value_init from the trunk to the release branch: http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/changeset/46464 It now has a little const object, boost::initialized_value, that has a generic conversion operator, so that one can initialize any CopyConstructible, DefaultConstructible type of object as follows: T obj = boost::initialized_value; boost::initialized_value provides a workaround to compilers that haven't yet fully implemented value-initialization. Including compiler versions from MSVC, Borland, Sun, and GCC: http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/browser/branches/release/libs/utility/value… For example, suppose your class Foo has all its data stored in a simple aggregate struct, called Bar: class Foo { Bar m_bar; public: Foo(); }; struct Bar { std::string s; int i; }; The default constructor of Foo would typically want to value-initialize its data: Foo::Foo() : m_bar() // Value-initialization. { } This may not work properly, because of those aforementioned compiler issues. (Bar::i may be left uninitialized!) Workaround for a msvc 7.1 & 8.0 bug surfaced in the boost 1.35 release part II

Hi all, Boost 1.35 triggers msvc 7.1 & 8.0 to export a local type named CRITICAL_SECTION declared in detail/lwm_win32_cs.hpp into the global namespace. This causes 'ambiguous identifier' compiler errors upon attempts to use (the global Windows type) CRITICAL_SECTION. Please refer to; [boost.pool] Workaround for a msvc 7.1 & 8.0 bug surfaced in the boost 1.35 release 4/8/2008 3:52 PM and; Changeset link: http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/changeset/44480 Above fixes problems caused by usage of CRITICAL_SECTION in Boost itself namely in pool/detail/mutex.hpp. However usage of CRITICAL_SECTION outside Boost still gives problems. For example; #include <boost/archive/text_iarchive.hpp> typedef int CRITICAL_SECTION; CRITICAL_SECTION cs; or (real live case); #include <boost/archive/text_iarchive.hpp> #include <atlcore.h> Results in 'ambiguous identifier' compiler errors. I attached a patch of detail/lwm_win32_cs.hpp that fixes this. Note that; 1. a real solution to the problem would be to alter Boost such that the VS compiler bug is no longer triggered. 2. more local types, other then CRITICAL_SECTION, may have the same problem.
