* Problem - I have the following types "uint8, uint16, uint32, int8, int16, int32, float32, float64" called "scalar types". - The types "uint8, uint16, uint32" are called "size types". - "List types" are defined as every possible combination of size types and scalar types (24 in this case). - For every scalar type and every size type I need to store a callback. - The function templates template <typename ScalarType> void scalar_type_callback(); template <typename SizeType, typename ScalarType> void list_type_callback(); are function templates and not functions, and cannot be stored in a function object. * Solution 1 I wrote code using boost::mpl (a time ago, with some help of the boost groups) that generates a class containing a callback for each scalar type and a class containing a callback for each list type. * Solution 2 The code from solution 1 worked, but was slow to compile, and I did not fully understand it. Therefore I decided to read the book "C++ Template Metaprogramming" and reimplement the code from scratch, without boost::mpl. The attached code consists of - A number number of simple mpl constructs similar to the ones in boost::mpl (bool_, if_, eval_if, pair, inherit, identity, void_). - A single sequence list with operations push_front and reverse. It does not include an abstraction layer over sequences. - A number of simple mpl constructs needed to implement the solution to the problem above (for_each, joint_view, transform, product_view, inherit_linearly). Since sequences are not abstracted, these are implemented in terms of the list sequence and (only) the two operations push_front and reverse, using fold-like constructs. The only construct not in boost::mpl is product_view, which constructs the outer product of two sequences (it might be interesting to include something like this in boost::mpl). There is no support for lambda expressions, which causes some complications (e.g. the Operation argument for transform is a class template in my design), but the mpl code is pretty clear and usable. I am attaching this code in the hope it is usefull to anyone (e.g. didactical purposes, small mpl systems without using boost::mpl). Hi, I have a Unicode character library that I created some time ago with Rogier van Dalen, that needs a template class similar to std::string in order to provide completely generic Unicode string support. The intention was that this would be submitted to boost but we both ran out of time after doing the generic Unicode character support. Cannot build boost with MSVC9

Hi, I read a similar topic on this issue and someone simply mentioned to add some items to user-config.jam, which did not help me. I found 2 user-config.jam files. I wasn't sure which one to edit so I tried them both. The problem still happens. The build process has no problem finding cl.exe, however it states errors like the following: boost/config/no_tr1/utility.hpp(21) : fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'utility': No such file or directory Which means to me that I need to specify the visual studio include directories somewhere, but I'm not sure where. Could someone outline all of the details I need to know to get this working? Where do I add the include paths? Thanks. PS: I'm compiling boost 1.34.1

[announce] Multi-signature overload of any function or function object

Yet another C++ toy announce! After the object factory this time it comes a multi-signature function overload. My old overload zip package in Vault has been replaced by a complete new one. This one is much simpler and very small although it's completely self contained (no _any_ library needed, even not standard ones) and is, IMHO, a better example of an exercise on C++ templates. BTW it even seems to work ;-) Interested people could find it in boost Vault under the name overload_5_3_2008.zip of course any feedback is welcomed. Thanks for your attention Marco

[SVN/Trunk] ptr_map_adapter.hpp correction

I downloaded the svn version of the trunk folder and compiled boost using VC9. After using a boost::ptr_map< unsigned int, boost::variant<int, bool, float, std::string, Resource::shrd_ptr> > I got an error at line 26 inside "boost/ptr_container/detail/serialize_ptr_map_adapter.hpp" about "ptr_container_detail::serialize_as_const" not being defined for "ptr_container_detail". Seeing as how it was however defined in boost/ptr_container/detail/serialize_reversible_cont.hpp, I copy and pasted the definition into boost/ptr_container/ptr_map_adapter.hpp (which is being included by serialize_ptr_map_adapter.hpp) and now everything seems to work. I didn't have any problems with ptr_map before, so I have no clue as to why I got this error all of a sudden, but now it works fine. Sorry if this is something which was already adressed somewhere. Hooking up the exception lib for testing?

I've committed Boost Exception, complete with Jamfile under libs/exception/test. It seems that to activate the automatic testing I need to insert a line in status/Jamfile.v2, but I decided to ask before I modify it -- please someone make sure my Jamfile is correct (works for me locally.) (I have not yet committed the changes to throw_exception.hpp necessary to enable the cloning support for all exceptions emitted by Boost; before I do that I want to make sure the rest of the code works on all platforms.) A possible bug in Boost.property_tree with UNICODE XML file?

I've posted this message in the user list before with no response. I realized it might be better to post here again since boost.property_tree is still in the svn trunk yet to be released with boost 1.5.0. I am trying to use read_xml() on an xml-format config file, which starts like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"> ..... This file is well-formed and verified by "XML Copy Writer", it can also be open by IE or Filefox with no problem. I am using this code snippet to parse this file: try{ read_xml<wptree>(xmlfile,pt); } catch(xml_parser-error e) { e.what(); } and it throws an exception saying "expected <". By looking into the code I found that, this caused by the fact that the xmlfile starts with a Unicode Byte Order Mark (BOM)-0xFFFE . "fffe 3c00 3f00 7800 ......" However, read_xml() cannot handle this BOM byte and throws. It's easy to fix it by simply discard the BOM byte, but I wonder whether there is already a flag to enable/disable this that I am unaware of. BTW, I am using the svn trunk version. Hello, I am currently a second year student pursuing my B.Tech degree in Computer Science at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, India and I would like to know how I can help out with the Boost project. I have a strong background in C++ and the STL and I'm an avid user of some of the Boost libraries like Spirit and Lambda. Also, (I guess this question is pretty old and must have been debated many times), are there any plans for creation of a portable network communication library as part of Boost? [signals]question regarding header placement

I've started to look at the signals/slots libraries for a task I have to do and have found it interesting. I'm curious about the header placement of headers and namespaces used by this library. Specifically I find the following. boost/signal.hpp containing boost::signal boost/visit_each.hpp containing boost::visit_each boost/last_value.hpp containnig boost::last_value as these are part of the signals library, should they be in boost/signals/... with namespaces of boost/signal/signal ... etc.? This is especially confusing in the case of signal.hpp which is not at all were one would expect to find it. Are these things where they are due to some oversight? Or were they placed there for some special reason. Were their separate reviews of these things. They seem to be part of the signals/slots libraries. Robert Ramey
