[1.35] Release branch status

Hi, The release branch was created some time ago, and Interprocess and Intrusive were just copied from the trunk since they are new libraries for Boost 1.35. Meanwhile, I've been committing some fixes and improvements to the trunk branch. Both release and trunk branch regression seem to be ok. I still see several issues in the release branch and I don't know when we plan to release 1.35 so I was wondering if I could update Interprocess+Intrusive of the release branch with the current trunk code. If so, this merge is something I'm allowed to do with SVN (I read something about a python script some weeks ago) or the release manager is the only person who should do this? Regards, Ion

Bug in mapped_file.cpp

In the file \boost\libs\iostreams\src\mapped_file.cpp on line 126 there is a simple member function called mapped_file_source::is_open(). It was assuming that an invalid handle was 0 but that is not true for a Windows bulid. I changed the function to the following: bool mapped_file_source::is_open() const { #ifdef BOOST_IOSTREAMS_WINDOWS return !!pimpl_ && pimpl_->handle_ != INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE; #else return !!pimpl_ && pimpl_->handle_ != 0; #endif } This was from the latest revision of svn. Organization of headers and their namespaces

Dear all, When using boost, there is one thing that annoys me. My editor can do syntax expansion quite well, but the amount of information in the boost namespace is so huge, that is really hard to locate anything, and near impossible to guess which classes and functions that belong to the same library. The obvious way to fix this to 1. let all libs have their own namespace, and 2. never let any library pull anything into namespace boost I think most recent libraries have adhered to 1., but possible not 2. My question is also if we, at some point, should start moving non-conforming libraries into their own namespace. This does break a library when upgrading, but might be worth it in the long run. Any thoughts? -Thorsten

[proto] new version, breaking changes

I've just uploaded proto v3 to the file vault (http://www.boost-consulting.com/vault/index.php?directory=Template%20Metapr…) Proto is a toolkit for implementing domain-specific embedded languages in C++ using expression templates. The new version has a completely rewritten set of transforms that are incompatible with the old transforms, so this is a breaking change. [type_traits] VC9/TR1 failures vs Boost

I've been running the Boost regression tests against VC9 with the beta TR1 feature pack, and raising some of the failures as bugs with MS. >From reading the standards, it seems that some of the test failures are in areas which have changed over time. The MS blog post @ <http://tinyurl.com/3b9ksc> mentions N2157 ( http://tinyurl.com/2r54lo ), so i assume that they're working on at least that revision. So, from the tests: -tr1_is_base_of_test (http://tinyurl.com/2hzmae) is failing because Boost thinks is_base_of<int, int> should be true and VC9 says it's false. n2157 has the example "is_base_of<int, int>::value // false", so VC looks correct here. -tr1_is_convertible_test (http://tinyurl.com/2dortk) has 2 sets of failures: 1) is_convertible<float,void>/is_convertible<void,void> are both false, and Boost expects both to be true. n2157 says "If To and From are void types, the result is true. However if only one of To or From is a void type, then the result is false", which is a change to the spec. In this case, both Boost and VC9 seem to be wrong in one case. 2)is_convertible<float,convertible_from<float&>> is_convertible<char,convertible_from<char&>> are both false. n2157 says "Given a type T, the TR1 is_convertible<T, T&>::value is true whereas this paper proposes false unless T is a non-volatile but const qualified type", which sounds like VC is correct here. Does anyone with a better grasp of the current requirements have any thoughts on this? Thanks, Richard Webb

Persistence - Multi Index Container

Hi All, A team in my development group is currently using a proprietary container with a functionality similar to the MultiIndexContainer except for an additional feature of using Memory Mapped File to store the container data. The proprietary container performance is poor with ot without using the mapped file. The memory mapped file feature is extermly important since the component must keep the entire state even if the system crushes. Inorder for them to use the Multi Index container they need some persistence feature. Serializing the container every 2 seconds or so is not possible since the container size will be too large (dozens of MB). Is there any solution or future plans to develop such a feature in the Multi Index Container and in other boost containers?
