non-template ostream_iterator?
by Andreas Harnack 25 Nov '07

25 Nov '07

Hi @, does anybody know why the ostream_iterator class has been mad a template if a template just for the assignment operator would have been sufficient? I.e., why does it say: template<class T> ostream_iterator { ... public: ostream_iterator& operator=(T const&); ... }; instead of ostream_iterator { ... public: template<class T> ostream_iterator& operator=(T const&); ... }; or possibly: template<class os=std::ostream> ostream_iterator { ... public: typedef typename os::char_type char_type; typedef typename os::traits_type traits_type; typedef os ostream_type; template<class T> ostream_iterator& operator=(T const&); ... }; In my compiler version (g++ 3.0 and g++ 3.4) the type T is used nowhere else. As a consequence I have to specify myContainer v; copy(v.begin(), v.end(), ostream_iterator<myContainer::value_type>(cout, "\n")); while it just could be: copy(v.begin(), v.end(), ostream_iterator(cout, "\n")); or copy(v.begin(), v.end(), ostream_iterator<>(cout, "\n")); The answer is obvious for istream_iterators: They provide their input values through the operator*() and have, giving the fact that it does not take any argument, no way to deduce the required return type, so it needs to be specified explicitly. That's different for ostream_iterators. They get their output values as arguments and are perfectly capable of deducing their type, so requiring it as an explicit template argument seems to be an unnecessary over-specification. One could argue, that the template argument adds to type safety, but that sound rather weak to me, especially if standard streams are involved. After all, std::cout and std::cerr are both global, so there's nothing at all to prevent me from printing to them from anywhere else in my application, even from a call implicitly made by function used in the expression above; let alone threads or other operating system processes. So, it seems to me, that the template argument does not provide any additional value but only makes the expression above unnecessary complicate. Am I missing something? Thanks, Andreas

Old Boost Bugs [ > 36 months ]
by Marshall Clow 25 Nov '07

There are several bugs in the Trac system that have been there since (at least) 2004. That makes them more than three years old. I really think that these should be dealt with (fixed, marked as obsolete, declared "wontFix") for 1.35. [ Note that I'm not talking about "Feature requests" or "Tasks", just "Bugs ] They are: #241 Miss " = ParserT()" spirit djowel 03/01/04 #283 Compiler error for tokenizer on Solaris tokenizer jbandela 06/20/04 #284 pool::purge_memory() does not reset next_size pool shammah 07/02/04 #287 wrong usage of ios_base::narrow date_time az_sw_dude 07/12/04 #290 perfomance: memory cleanup for pool takes too long pool shammah 07/21/04 #314 spirit insert_key_actor.hpp spirit djowel 11/03/04 #315 Implement operator[] for Tokenizer tokenizer jsiek 11/04/04 #316 date_time type conversion warning date_time az_sw_dude 11/19/04 I know that Stephen Cleary (pool) and John Bandela (tokenizer) don't seem to be around any more. I am volunteering to look at the pool bugs - can anyone look at the tokenizer bugs? And those maintainers who are still around (Jeff, Joel, Jeremy), please close these bugs? Thanks in advance! -- -- Marshall Marshall Clow Idio Software <mailto:marshall@idio.com> Freedom isn't being able to do what you like, it's allowing someone else to do or say something you hate and supporting their right to do so.

[serialization][trunk] mingw non-wide char regressions
by "JOAQUIN LOPEZ MU?Z" 24 Nov '07

24 Nov '07

Hello, The trunk version of Boost.Serialization is having problems with all the DLL, non-wide char variants of MingW tests, see for instance http://tinyurl.com/2j7dq2 . Although it's not apparent from the regression tests output (the messages are totally misguiding), my local tests indicate that the problem is related to the inability of boost_serialization (no w) to build due to some mising std::codecvt<wchar_t, char, int> member functions. This is expected as MingW is long known to have defective wide char support. The reason why current tests are failing when they were passing in Boost 1.34.1 is the seemingly inadvertent move of codecvt_null from WSOURCES to SOURCES in boost/libs serialization/build/Jamfile.v2: Trunk: http://tinyurl.com/2wxjfy Boost 1.34.1: http://tinyurl.com/32bx8d codecvt_null.cpp deals exclusively with wchar_t functionality, so it need not be in boost_serialization, only in boost_wserialization. The attached patch corrects this. I've checked it locally in a MinGW installation and it makes (non-wide) serialization-dependent tests pass. OK to commit? Thank you, Joaquín M López Muñoz Telefónica, Investigación y Desarrollo

[1.35.0] Filename lengths, path lengths, leading numerics, multiple periods?
by Beman Dawes 24 Nov '07

24 Nov '07

In trying to do merges into the release branch, I'm running into precommit check failures due to filename and path issues. I've run the inspection report for name issues. See http://mysite.verizon.net/beman/inspect-names.html The inspect program is treating as errors: * Filenames longer than 31 characters. * Filenames beginning with a non-alphabetic character. * Directory depth greater than 8. * Path length greater than 100 characters. * More than one period ('.') in a name. These requirements were put in place to ensure that Boost on a CD would be readable on systems that only supported the minimum ISO 9660:1988 standard. Since then, ISO 9660:1999 has come out, removing many of the old restrictions. See http://www.y-adagio.com/public/standards/iso_cdromr/tocont.htm The only remaining ISO 9660:1999 restriction that affects Boost is a maximum path length of 207. To calculate that, we assume a root in the form boost_X_XX_X. I burned the current trunk onto a CD, and verified that the very deep and long paths could be read without problems on Windows (XP SP2), Linux (Ubuntu 7.10), and Mac OS X (Leopard). I recommend we remove all restrictions except for a path length limit of 207 characters. --Beman

[1.35.0] Progress report
by Beman Dawes 24 Nov '07

24 Nov '07

In another thread, John Maddock wrote: > Where are we with the release process? Our build and test infrastructure finally seems stable, and able to support the 1.35.0 release. Tests don't look too awful on our high-priority release targets (and I've just updated the list of high-priority targets so that the Unresolved Issues report reflects those priorities.) The inspection report is still shows an uncomfortably large number of problems, and I'm about to turn on more of the checks. Merging of libraries into branches/release is finally underway. Quite a bit of work has been done on the website. There are still lots of outstanding tickets. No attempt has been made yet to try to put the pieces together to shakedown the build release candidate process. I realize that from the perspective of not shipping a release until all but the most trivial issue are resolved, the above report seems overly optimistic. But I'm assuming we are committed to getting a release out sometime in December, and that it is better to get releases out regularly than holding releases until they are perfect. > Do we have some kind of schedule / deadlines for being ready to ship... * Merge for release complete: Sunday, November 25th. * Start testing release candidate build process: Monday, December 3rd. * Release Candidate 1: Monday, December 10th. That implies clearing most of the remaining high-priority platform test failures in the next two weeks. --Beman

[regex] patches for Windows CE
by David Deakins 24 Nov '07

24 Nov '07

Here is a set of patches to enable Boost.Regex on WinCE. Some specifics about the fixes: libs/regex/src/cregex.cpp: libs/regex/src/posix_api.cpp: libs/regex/src/wide_posix_api.cpp: Windows CE does not supply the 'safe string' functions in its CRT. boost/regex/v4/fileiter.hpp: libs/regex/src/fileiter.cpp: libs/regex/src/w32_regex_traits.cpp: Windows CE does not include the ANSI versions of the Win32 API. Additional code was added to substitute the wide-char API and do appropriate wide/narrow character conversions in WinCE builds. libs/regex/test/c_compiler_checks/posix_api_check.c: libs/regex/test/c_compiler_checks/posix_api_check.cpp: libs/regex/example/timer/regex_timer.cpp: Since these tests explicitly work with narrow character strings, it is probably intended that the test code use regcompA, regexecA, regfreeA, etc. Currently it uses regcomp, regexec, etc which will transform to regcompW, regexecW, etc on Windows CE. libs/regex/test/regress/test_locale.cpp: Windows CE does not currently include the setlocale functions in its CRT. Also some fixes to substitute wide-char Win32 API in WinCE builds where ANSI Win32 API is currently used. Let me know if there are any questions. Thanks, -Dave

[config][vacpp 8.0] BOOST_FUNCTION_SCOPE_USING_DECLARATION_BREAKS_ADL should be defined?
by "JOAQUIN LOPEZ MU?Z" 23 Nov '07

23 Nov '07

Hello, the errors shown at http://tinyurl.com/2ao9tf and other tests lead me to believe that IBM Visual Age v8.0 has a problem with using declarations at function scope and ADL, yet the macro BOOST_FUNCTION_SCOPE_USING_DECLARATION_BREAKS_ADL is not defined for this compiler. I'd be grateful if someone with access to vacpp 8.0 (like the maintainer of Sandia-AIX regression tests) would: 1. Try libs/config/test/no_using_breaks_adl_pass.cpp. 2. If the latter passes, try the attached test fsudba.cpp, which exercises an alternative way in which using declarations at function scope can break ADL. Thank you! [ 217 open bugs today, 220 Wednesday ] Anyone want to take the bugs assigned to "None" ? If you are maintaining a library, and have not logged into the trac system at <http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/>, please do so ASAP. Until you do that, no tickets can be assigned to you, and will remain under "None". Instructions on working with tickets can be found at: <http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/TicketWorkflow> and a mapping of user names to "real names" can be found at: <http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/report/16> Bug summary 20 ramey 19 dgregor 17 az_sw_dude 14 djowel 12 grafik 12 doug_gregor 11 turkanis 10 None 9 johnmaddock 9 dave 8 agurtovoy 7 anthonyw 6 vladimir_prus 6 jsiek 6 bemandawes 5 witt 5 igaztanaga 4 pdimov 4 nesotto 3 jmaurer 3 danielw 2 urzuga 2 t_schwinger 2 pavol_droba 2 nasonov 2 matias 2 ebf 2 burbelgruff 1 speedsnail 1 shammah 1 samuel_krempp 1 rogeeff 1 niels_dekker 1 marshall 1 kaalus 1 hkaiser 1 guwi17 1 eric_niebler 1 dlwalker 1 aaron_windsor 1 <Blank> <Blank> 1307 [lambda] invalid boostbook None 1048 Spirit returns full = false in 1.34 if there is trailing spaces in input None 1068 Mersenne twister disables streaming for Visual C++ None 1094 Finding the correct library to link (feature request for pkg-config support)h None 1222 lambda::ret<T> should declare result_type.
