Ideas Wanted: How best to configure Boost.TR1 with GCC?

Folks, I have a configuration problem I don't know how to solve, so I'm soliciting for ideas. Here's the basic problem: Boost.TR1 has to replace some of the std library headers, and forward to the existing "real" ones. To do this it can either: 1) Use #include_next to forward to the real std lib header. 2) Use #include <../some_directory/header_name> to forward to the std lib header. Up until now, I've been using #1 with GCC, unfortunately if Boost is installed in /usr/include then it doesn't work: because the Boost include path appears *after* the std library one rather than before it. So... in response to a bug-report I recently changed it to method 2 (on Linux anyway), using the same configuration logic as STLport to determine what "some_directory" is called. Having tested it locally with several gcc versions on Linux everything seemed fine... except it's not: the problem is that gcc has a configuration option that lets you change the name of the directory the headers go in, and several Linux distro's change it from the default, so instead of being the normal default of something like "4.2.0" it's g++-v4 or something else that we can't automatically deduce :-( Obviously I could add a user-config macro for this purpose, but it's all a real pain basically :-( Anyone any better ideas? Or should I give up before I loose the will to live ! ;-) Thanks! John.

Proposal: Polymorphic Value Objects

I am proposing the addition of the following very simple utility in Boost, and thus request a very informal and early review of the ideas and design. Idea ---- The idea is to provide an utility that allows the manipulation of dynamically typed objects, that may be of any derived type of a given base type, as if it were a simple base object. This is quite similar to a smart pointer that does deep-copying, but without any pointer or memory allocation exposed. As code, it appears as such: poly_obj<Base> b = Derived(); poly_obj<BaseBase> b2 = b; // b2 is a copy of b (Derived::Derived(const Derived&) was called), implicit upcasting Motivation ---------- The motivation for this is that often usage of dynamic typing with inheritance and inclusion polymorphism often means explicit memory allocation and deallocation, and thus are often a source of unsafety. shared_ptr is one way to solve the problem, yet the shared object doesn't behave as a normal C++ object: it has entity semantics (= reference) instead of value semantics (= copying). shared_ptr is highly regarded as being one of the most useful utilities in boost by neophytes because it allows easier and simpler programming, without the usual issues in regards with pointers people are used to. However it might not always be the right solution, and I believe I have seen it being used even when sharing wasn't needed at all. As a matter of fact, it appears that sharing is rarely needed, and makes the program more difficult to understand. (sharing between threads also cause a few issues). Indeed, the object is freed when it is no longer used, but it's not always trivial to trace whether it's still used or not. Sharing also means you can expect side-effects coming from anywhere. Pure value objects make the program more easy to understand by making it more deterministic and thus to maintain. Value semantics is what most of the standard library is built upon. And thus it makes more sense to use the standard containers with poly_obj than with shared_ptr, because this is kind of semantics they were designed for. Design ------ To implement that utility, there is a need for a way to call the appropriate copy constructor and move constructor for the right types, even with type erasure. There is no standard way, however, to simply make constructors virtual, so there is a need to do such a thing. A few implementations of clone_ptr, a similar idea, that I have seen tried to make this non-intrusive. This of course adds some overhead, mainly in size of the object, but it has another downside: it requires to assume that the types of the objects being inserted in it are their real types. Thus, writing that kind of code: poly_obj<Base> b = poly_obj<Base>(Derived()).get(); Would produce type splitting. (the get() member function returns a real C++ reference to the object) I believe this is not really a good thing. And the only way to fix that is to make the virtuality of the constructors intrusive. I thus came up with the following design: class Foo { ... public: virtual void clone(void* p) const { return new(p) Foo(*this); } virtual std::pair<std::size_t, std::size_t> size_and_align() const { return std::make_pair(sizeof(Foo), boost::alignment_of<Foo>::value); } }; (Of course, a 'mixin' can be used to not have to repeatly rewrite such code for every class) It should be quite important to stabilize that interface, so remarks are welcome. It is judged very important that the user should be able to define how the memory is allocated. Since virtual templates aren't possible, an allocator cannot be passed to the 'clone' member function. The solution I came up with allows to clone the object on already initialized memory, and provides the necessary information to know what that memory should be like. It is, however, still not really possible to use standard allocators, which need to know the type. An additional member for moving might also be needed. Code ---- Some initial code is available on the vault, in "Utilities". http://www.boost-consulting.com/vault/index.php?direction=0&order=&director… Note that the tests are just here to show how it's to be used, and are not real tests at all. No support for moving yet, and no support for using custom allocators either (since an allocator interface would have to be agreed upon, first). operator= also needs a facility to compare types, and thus it uses RTTI. Since I've seen a few times people who complained about the usage of RTTI, there is also a hack to replace it.

1.34 boost::filesystem::size() issues on OSX PPC (works on OSX Intel though)

Hello, all ... When I use v1.34s boost::filesystem::size() implementation on Mac OSX (10.4.10, Intel and PPC), I get different results. It appears to be a byte-ordering issue (since on little-endian machines (I tested on Windows and OSX Intel) it returns the correct result, while on big- endian machines (I tested on OSX PPC) it does not). While this is easy enough to code around, I don't recall reading anything about byte-ordering issues in the boost::filesystem portability guide, so i'm wondering if this is intentional? I have recently had my wrist slapped by John Maddock, not once, but twice :-(( My offences were committing both Too long filenames, and CamelCaseFileNames. Are either of these crimes that could be prevented by SVN pre-commit rules? [thread] RFC standard proposed mutex, read-write mutex, condition

Here is a link to a reference implementation and a FAQ for mutexes, locks and condition variables I am currently anticipating proposing for C++ standardization (or subsequent TR). http://home.twcny.rr.com/hinnant/cpp_extensions/concurrency_rationale.html I am posting this link here because this work draws heavily on the boost experience, and I believe feedback from boost users would be valuable. The documentation is scant, chiefly consisting of a "FAQ" which largely centers around questions regarding design decisions that differ from the boost threads package. I'm looking for both agreement and disagreement (and why) on these design decisions from users of the boost threading package. One big difference between this threading package and the boost threading package is the ability to use C++0X language features such as rvalue reference and variadic templates. The rvalue reference is used to make lock types movable but non-copyable. This comes in especially handy with the "upgrade" mutex/locks (see faq). Variadic templates are used for generic locking algorithms which can take an arbitrary number of locks. This code is compiled using Doug Gregor's conceptgcc. So far, only mutexes (including read/write mutexes), locks and conditions are addressed. Yes, C++0X will have a std::thread. It isn't covered in the link above. Any further questions you may supply, I may add to the FAQ (unless there are objections). Anyone is welcome to "boostize" any and all of this code. The reference implementation is intended to be freely shared. However it is currently only addressing POSIX systems. No problems are anticipated in porting to Windows, largely due to the existing boost thread libraries (for which I am extremely grateful to all of those who have worked in this area). Difference between tickets and bugs

I've received a couple of comments from people about the "daily bugs list" from people who want me to separate out the "bugs" from all the other kinds of tickets in the trac system. [ For the record, the other types of tickets are "Feature Requests", "Tasks", "Support Requests" and "Patches" ]. With that in mind, I will be sending out a smaller list every day, of just the "bugs". Less frequently, I will be sending either a full list of all open tickets, or separate messages for each kind of ticket. But mapped_file_source::is_open() incorrectly assumes that if the handle is invalid it will have a value of zero and it doesn't consider INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE a possibility. Obviously, adding INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE to mapped_file_source::is_open() would be poor design. A better way would be to explose a mapped_file_impl::is_valid() method that works as it should depending on the platform and have mapped_file_source::is_open() call it. Regards, Steven Burns

No more quiet days in my lab hacking out Boost.Graph code and documentation. On the brighter side, I have finished - at least to the satisfaction of mentor Jeremy Siek and myself - the goals that I had originally planned for my Summer of Code project. The end results are: - Two new graph classes (undirected and directed) which are intended to make the library more approachable for new developers - A suite of graph measures including degree and closeness centrality, mean geodesic distance, eccentricity, and clustering coefficients. - An algorithm for visiting all cycles in a directed graph (Tiernan's from 1970ish). It works for undirected graphs too, but reports cycles twice (one for each direction). - An algorithm for visiting all the cliques a graph (Bron&Kerbosch). Works for both directed and undirected. - Derived graph measures radius and diameter (from eccentricity) and girth and circumference (from Tiernan), and clique number (from Bron&Kerbosch). - An exterior_property class that helps hides some of the weirdness with exterior properties. - A constant-valued property map - useful for naturally unweighted graphs. - A noop-writing property map - useful when you have to provide an argument, but just don't care about the output. There are also a couple of other informal introductions that need to be polished, documented and tested. These include: - Graph cores - Implemented by David Gleich (@Stanford University) - Deterministic graph generators - capable of creating or inducing specific types of graphs over a vertex set (e.g., star graph, wheel graph, prism graph, etc). There are several other specific types that could be added to this, but I haven't had the time just yet. There are also some introductions in this package that can - or probably should be - backported to existing code. Specifically, issues dealing with vertex and edge indices and how they are mapped into exterior properties. There are also a couple of changes to the current codebase that can be immediately applied. Specifically, this includes new and updated concept checking classes and a completely new archetype system for concept coverage testing. I've also written quickbook docs for much of the new code - and have been slowly folding the older docs in - it's a long process. Also, if you aren't on a Linux box, you can't build the new docs since I'm using Makefiles, graphviz and latex to generate images. SVN update issue

Hi, in SVN trunk checkout I'm getting this: ghost@wind:~/Work/Boost/boost-svn/tools/boostbook$ svn up -r38168 svn: REPORT request failed on '/svn/boost/!svn/vcc/default' svn: Target path does not exist I *think* this is caused by renamed of trunk to devel and back to trunk that I observe in "svn log". However, I'm not sure what's the right way to do what I want. Any ideas? - Volodya
