[filesystem] patch for operations.cpp for HP-UX/gcc
by Boris Gubenko 13 Sep '07

13 Sep '07

The fix for gcc on HP-UX in revision 39130 of filesystem/src/operations.cpp disappeared in revision 39130 of the module. As a result, filesystem library stopped to compile on this platform again. Attached the patch. Ok to commit? Release Tools Analysis Part I: Build systems
by David Abrahams 13 Sep '07

13 Sep '07

This is part 1 of my analysis of our prospects for improving the Boost release process by improving the tools. I'll post something based on this to the wiki after y'all give me an earful about what I got wrong or overlooked. Build System ============ I'm only considering BBv2 and cmake here, because we currently use the former and Doug and Troy have been putting lots of effort into the latter, and Kitware has volunteered to support it for us. Cmake has lots of advantages over BBv2 for developers (e.g. instant build startup time, use favorite development environment) and packagers (e.g. one-line installer target declaration), but these factors are more important for day-to-day development than they are for testing. Instant build startup time would improve test turnaround time, of course, but build startup does not dominate our testing time yet. BBv2 also has overall speed/memory-consumption problems. These might be addressable using the Boehm GC, but the last attempt resulted in crashes (more investigation needed). BBv2 has a few advantages over Cmake for testing. 1. BBv2 can build with multiple toolsets and/or variants in one invocation. That, however, is trivially overcome by using a wrapper script over cmake. 2. BBv2 serializes the output of simultaneous tests, which makes it possible to run tests in parallel with -jN. This is really important for test turnaround time. Even uniprocessors benefit from a low N (like 2) IME, due to disk/cpu tradeoffs. The IBM testers are currently using -j16 to great effect on their big iron. However, output serialization is only important because both Boost's process_jam_log and ctest/dart currently use a parse-the-build-log strategy to assemble the test results. This approach is hopelessly fragile in my opinion. Instead, each build step in a test should generate an additional target that contains the fragment of XML pertaining to that test, and the complete result should be an XML file that is the catenation of all the fragments. Rene is working on that feature for BBv2. I don't expect it would take more than a couple of days to add this feature to either build system, so the advantage of serialization may be easily neutralized. 3. Platform/compiler-independent build specification. This one seems pretty important on the face of it. If library authors' tests won't run on platforms to which they don't have direct access, we'll need to find people to port and maintain test specifications for the other platforms. On the other hand, very few tests are doing anything fancy when it comes to build configuration. To understand the real impact of this BBv2 feature, someone would have to objectively analyze the cmake build specifications Doug and Troy have been working on for complexity and portability. If either of those guys can be objective, it would be fastest if they'd do the analysis. 4. Cmake's built-in programming language is even more horrible, IMO, than bjam's. I bet you get used to it, like anything else, but it does present a barrier to entry. On the other hand, it's my impression that most programming jobs can be done more simply and directly under Cmake because it lacks BBv2's multiple-toolset/variant builds, and so has no need for virtual targets. Neither systems can trace #include dependencies through macros (e.g. #include SOME_MACRO(xyz)), which occasionally leads to inaccurate results from incremental testing. This is an important problem that should be fixed. Based on the above points, I'd say either build system has the potential to work for Boost's testing needs and neither one is substantially closer to being ideal for us (for testing). Since our systems use BBv2 now, it makes sense to concentrate effort there. However, if cmake were to suddenly acquire the XML fragment generation and the analysis of point 3 above showed that portable build specification is easily accomplished in cmake or not very important to our testing needs, I'd probably be vote the other way. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting http://www.boost-consulting.com The Astoria Seminar ==> http://www.astoriaseminar.com

[type traits] incomplete types
by Johan Råde 13 Sep '07

13 Sep '07

When some type traits, for instance is_base_of, are called with incomplete types, then they may silently "return" incorrect results. It would be better if they failed to compile with incomplete types. Here is a suggestion how that might be implemented: template<int> struct assert_complete0 {}; template<typename T> struct assert_complete : public assert_complete0<sizeof(T)> {}; template<typename B, typename T> is_base_of : public assert_complete<B>, public assert_complete<T> ... I have tested this with with VC 7.1, and it works. Will this work on other platforms? Are there any reasons not to add this check? Johan Råde CTO, Qlucore AB

[Boost][config] limits_test is missing [Boost][test] symbols
by K. Noel Belcourt 13 Sep '07

13 Sep '07

Hi, I'm trying to run the trunk version of boost/libs/config tests and am getting this linker error from limits_test with the Pathscale 3.0 compiler. pathscale.link ../../../bin.v2/libs/config/test/limits_test.test/ pathscale-3.0/debug/threading-multi/limits_test /var/scratch/boost/libs/config/test/limits_test.cpp:85: undefined reference to `boost::unit_test::unit_test_log_t::set_checkpoint (boost::unit_test::basic_cstring<char const>, unsigned long, boost::unit_test::basic_cstring<char const>)' Now poking around boost/test, I found set_checkpoint defined in impl/ unit_test_log.ipp, which is apparently never included into <boost/ test/test_tools.hpp>. Here's how I found this. [boost/test] pwd /var/scratch/boost/boost/test [boost/test] find . -type f -exec grep -H impl/unit_test_log.ipp {} \; ./included/unit_test.hpp:#include <boost/test/impl/unit_test_log.ipp> ./included/test_exec_monitor.hpp:#include <boost/test/impl/ unit_test_log.ipp> [boost/test] find . -type f -exec grep -H included/unit_test.hpp {} \; ./included/unit_test_framework.hpp:#include <boost/test/included/ unit_test.hpp> [boost/test] find . -type f -exec grep -H included/ test_exec_monitor.hpp {} \; [boost/test] find . -type f -exec grep -H included/ unit_test_framework.hpp {} \; So how is boost/libs/config/test/limits_test supposed to pick up set_checkpoint and other missing Boost.test symbols? What am I missing? Thanks. -- Noel

[serialization] save_pointer_type::invoke - possible error
by Sergey Skorniakov 12 Sep '07

12 Sep '07

Hello, I'm developing custom polymorphic archive and noticed that virtual function save_null_pointer is never called for my archive. I think the problem is in save_pointer_type::invoke (boost/archive/detail/oserializer.hpp): const basic_pointer_oserializer * bpos_ptr = register_type(ar, * t); if(NULL == t){ basic_oarchive & boa = boost::smart_cast_reference<basic_oarchive &>(ar); boa.save_null_pointer(); save_access::end_preamble(ar); return; } save(ar, * t, bpos_ptr); I see no reasons to use smart_cast here. I think, the code sholud be: const basic_pointer_oserializer * bpos_ptr = register_type(ar, * t); if(NULL == t){ ar.save_null_pointer(); save_access::end_preamble(ar); return; } save(ar, * t, bpos_ptr); Please correct this in the next release of library (or explain).

The problem is what guarantee you can have when reading the value of a shared counter that can be asynchronously modified by other threads. In my use case, related to the implementation of copy-on-write behaviour of a smart-pointer-like class, I have the guarantee that if the ref_count is 1, then I'm sure that only one thread owns the smart ptr. This is the only guarantee I need to implement COW correctly. It holds because: * when the smart_ptr is created, the reference is set to 1. * if you want to pass it to an other thread, you will place it in a synchronized queue or other mechanism, that will provide the necessary memory barriers. * if an other thread is copying it from the initial thread, and the initial thread can do a modifying operation that triggers COW, then the accesses must be locked, or you will end in undefined behaviour. * if a third thread is copying it from a thread that has a copy, but was not the initial one (on which we suppose we are operating the COW), then the count was already >1 Note: the other implication (if only one thread has it, then the count will be seen as 1) does not always hold, but this doesn't affect the correctness. Probably there are other legitimate uses of the atomic counter that requires a memory barrier (or only an aquire), but this is not the most general case. The outcome, then, will depend on the processor semantics. Intel has just documented the memory model for both x86 and ia64 (thanks to gpd for this link): http://developer.intel.com/products/processor/manuals/318147.pdf Reading it, it seems to me that, if you always update a memory location with locked operations (that operate as memory barriers), then you don't need any acquire when reading that value, to ensure that you will see all the stores (before the update) from the thread that updated the value. In trying to commit an update, I'm getting the following message: Error Commit failed(details follow) Error MERGE request failed on '/svn/boost/branches/serialization_next_release/regression' Error 'pre-commit" hook failed with error output: And that's it - no indication of what I might to do permit this go through. Any help appreciated. Robert Ramey
