Hello All, We are using the Boost Regex library for C++ in 1 of our projects. I have downloaded Boost Regex version 1.30. The library compiled fine on Linux with GCC compiler. But we use Sun Solaris 5.9 on 1 of the production boxes with Sun Studio 10 compiler. And it is giving us compilation errors while trying to install the libraries there. Is there any way you can let us know the appropriate thing to do? I am attaching the output from the ./configure script and the makefile output. We tried to debug an error and kind of fixed it. I am attaching the change that I made. unused variable warnings

A long time ago I read a post that mentioned a standard way to disable unused variable warnings in boost. Specifically this one: http://tinyurl.com/2o4ovh Although a trivial utility it seems generally useful to me and I was wondering if it existed in boost as a utility somewhere. Rene is right easy editing on a wiki does not necessarily improve documentation!! but Doug is also right that by lowering the bar for people to assist/help with writing documentation we can have more up to date documentation and improve on existing documentation. One of the IBD project's; specifically the "Quickbook as a wiki processor" project (http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/QuickbookWikiProcessor) could help. We could setup something like officially sanctioned documentation stored on the official www.boost.org website and provide a link to the beta.boost.org (or is it svn.boost.org?) wiki with the caveat that this is community developed documentation and has not been reviewed for correctness (something like the Ubuntu documentation?). Users could go to this location (at their own risk) if they are interested in documentation that might not be as polished or checked over by experts but hopefully find documentation more up to date that could help them! People interested in clarifying, improving or adding to the documentation could also go to this location and start adding or modifying documentation. Periodically (every month, every quarter, every 6 months, every official boost release?) the IBD (assistant) editors (or for library specific documentation the library maintainers (if they are so inclined)): * could review the documentation additions/changes; * seek expert opinion from library maintainers or other experts where it is not simple to determine if the update is correct; * make a diff of the QuickBook file and merge it with the official QuickBook file; * check the changes in and run the official Boost website documentation generation tool chain to update the www.boost.org website pages. Some of the benefits of this include: * Still having officially sanctioned documentation that users can refer to or be directed to; * All interested parties to easily contribute to the documentation process (no installation footprint (except for a web browser) to write and validate documentation); * Potentially lowering the bar for translation efforts; * Library maintainers have the opportunity for patches to improve their documentation; * Have a simple diff file that can be reviewed for changes during the approval process (no HTML mark-up to get in the way); * Potentially use Trac to manage the migration of the diff file's that need to be merged into the official documentation (including comments, review notes and who merged it); * Through the generation of the Quickbook tool chain have a consistent look and feel to all written documentation on the Boost websites. Some of the cons: * We have effectively duplicated our documentation between www.boost.org and beta.boost.org (is there some way to allow the user to click on a button and apply the diff (with the beta content changes) on the same page?); * Library maintainers now need to worry about another location for documentation (can this be mitigated by using the IBD editors?); * Users through ignorance updating the beta documentation with plain wrong advice. Another benefit is potential boost submissions or approved library submissions that have not made a major boost release yet could store their documentation in the beta.boost.org website for review and access in a semi-official capacity which allows interested users/reviews to more easily find this documentation. [Typeof] Why not use decltype?

The Boost.Typeof library does a lot of work to determine the type of an expression. At last week's meeting, the C++ committee voted to add "decltype" into the C++0x standard. decltype is what we want from typeof: a proper, reference-preserving way to get the type of an arbitrary expression. As of today, GCC 4.3's experimental C++0x mode contains support for decltype. I have updated the Boost Config library (on the CVS trunk) to contain BOOST_HAS_DECLTYPE, indicating the presence of decltype. A sufficiently-motivated person could certainly use this macro to give a simple implementation of decltype for C++0x compilers... There is nightly testing of Boost's trunk on the latest version of GCC 4.3 (also built nightly), so we will get appropriate testing of C+ +0x features throughout Boost. - Doug

In UNIX systems, this calls "unlink" and deletes the file in use from the filesystem but attached processes continue working with the deleted file. But I agree that I should add more explanations to the function to note the differences between Windows and Unix. I'm afraid that I won't find a portable implementation for "erase". Note that this behavior also happens with the standard C function std::remove() that deletes a file. The unix version calls "unlink" and always deletes the file from the filesystem. [graph] question regarding iterators vs descriptors

Hello, I'm developing the geometric library for the summer of code 2007. In our design, we use descriptors similar to the graph library. But we are having problems with the descriptors especially when carrying out the erase methods for containers, where iterators are needed. In our case using iterators for list and set containers seems more natural than using descriptors. On the other hand, descriptors can be handled easily on vector, and they enable a stable way to access container elements under certain operations( such as resize). We are in the process of deciding whether to continue with the descriptors or iterators, or maybe something hybrid. I guess my main question is does using descriptors have advantages over iterators in the design or the runtime of the graph library? Also are there other specific reasons to use descriptors that you experienced? Any insight on this issue would be appreciated. Thanks, huseyin
