is_enum implementation, why add_reference ?

Hello, I'm currently having a look at boost's type traits implementation. At the moment, I'm curious about is_enum. Can please someone explain me why add_reference is applied before testing convertibility to int_convertible ??? Trying to find more information about how to detect enum types, I only found this reference http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.c++.moderated/browse_thread/thread… where it's explained that "An enum is a user-defined type that is convertible to int without an user-defined conversion (and two user-defined conversions in a row are illegal, so you can detect that)." [type_traits?] enable_if an overload for a function exists

I want to enable a function templated on a type T if a function it relies on overloaded on that type. All I know is that this compiles for types I want to enable on and fails to compile for types I want to disable on. static float (*const func ) ( float , float ) = std::atan2; // compiles static int (*const func ) ( int , int ) = std::atan2; // fails to compile Ideally I think I'd like to do something like: template< typename T > typename enable_if< is_overloaded< T ( T ), std::asin > >::type some_function( T x ) { std::cout << std::asin(x); } I'm not even sure if I really need this or not. The best I've come up with has problems with the compiler crashing in some cases. Hi, I am wondering if there is a construct in boost which, given a type T, returns the underlying "storable" type - say if T is int & the "storable_type" should be int. I'm not sure if the word "storable" is the best word... The scenario I am facing is making a function call that takes a parameter of type T, where I need to prepare the parameter before calling (specifically, deserializing it from an archive). Hence, as far as I can tell, I need to declare a variable of the underlying storable type, and get the right value inside it. So far, I've been using: template<typename T> struct storable : public boost::remove_const<typename boost::remove_reference<T>::type > {}; but I'm not sure if that cuts it in all situations. From ld output on HP-UX, for example: ld: Duplicate symbol "boost::filesystem::basic_filesystem_error<boost:: filesystem::basic_path<std::basic_string<char,std::char_traits<char>, std::allocator<char> >,boost::filesystem::path_traits> >::what() const" The duplicate symbol is coming from the explicit specialization in boost/filesystem/path.hpp conditionalized for anything but gcc with the following comment: // TODO: Figure out why this specialization is causing problems with GCC #ifndef __GNUC__ ... With aCC (HP-UX) and cxx (Tru64), this specialization is causing linker's muldef if several modules include header file with the specialization. According to reproducer below, this is the same problem with gcc also, although I don't know what "problems with GCC" the comment above refers to. This specialization does not cause a problem with Intel compiler for Itanium: see output for intel_ecc and iVMS below. Attached patch fixes the problem on HP-UX/aCC and Tru64/cxx by extending condition under which the specialization is not provided (before the fix, it was not provided for gcc only). I verified that it fixes the problem on the aforementioned platforms. Ok to commit? The binary operations essentially have become TRInary operations; it isn't +(x,y), but rather +(x,y,context). Context participates in the operation. So the question is, how do we implement this without forcing the user to do something really ugly like: z = add(x, y, context); My solution was to wrap the expression in an instance of context.
