[Regex][Spirit][Test][Wave] missing include file
by Kevin Sopp 04 Apr '07

04 Apr '07

Hi, I tried to compile boost cvs with gcc-4.3 snapshot to see what would happen since libstdc++ cleaned up their header files for 4.3. This produces some errors about missing identifiers, no other include file related problems were found. I have condensed the build log to show the relevant files: ./boost/regex/v4/basic_regex_creator.hpp:1049: error: 'UCHAR_MAX' was not declared in this scope ./boost/regex/v4/basic_regex_creator.hpp:542: error: 'CHAR_BIT' was not declared in this scope ./boost/regex/v4/basic_regex.hpp:387: error: 'UINT_MAX' was not declared in this scope ./boost/regex/v4/basic_regex.hpp:66: error: 'CHAR_BIT' was not declared in this scope ./boost/regex/v4/basic_regex_parser.hpp:425: error: 'CHAR_BIT' was not declared in this scope ./boost/regex/v4/cpp_regex_traits.hpp:365: error: 'CHAR_BIT' was not declared in this scope ./boost/regex/v4/perl_matcher.hpp:34: error: 'CHAR_BIT' was not declared in this scope ./boost/regex/v4/regex_split.hpp:131: error: 'UINT_MAX' was not declared in this scope ./boost/regex/v4/states.hpp:210: error: 'CHAR_BIT' was not declared in this scope ./boost/spirit/phoenix/operators.hpp:355: error: 'INT_MAX' was not declared in this scope ./boost/test/test_tools.hpp:557: error: 'CHAR_BIT' was not declared in this scope ./boost/wave/grammars/cpp_chlit_grammar.hpp:93: error: 'CHAR_BIT' was not declared in this scope Kevin

Re: [boost] [system] Why is this not header-only?
by Alexander Nasonov 04 Apr '07

04.04.07, 12:54, Martin Bonner <Martin.Bonner(a)pi-shurlok.com>: > If shared_ptr had not been header only, I am pretty sure I could not > have got it in use in my company. There is a BIG difference between > "I've added a header tree to the 'install' folder in Source Control", > and "you need to install this chunky library on your system in order to > be able to develop this project". Luckily, parts of boost move to the std namespace and therefore have a chance to be split into include files and libstd implementation files. I'm starting to like Jeff's BOOST_ALLOW_ALL_HEADER_WITH_SYSTEM_INCLUDES. It's more work for boost developers but it would simplify an integration with the standard C++ library. -- Alexander Nasonov

You then create an ipp file and selectively #include it in the header file, with the pimpl definition. The ipp file also contains all of the includes needed for the pimpl definition. The only trick is that the "inline" keyword needs to be selectively prefaced to the class's member function definitions to make linking work correctly. That can be done with a macro. You get the best of both worlds. When in debug mode, with static libraries pre-built, the libraries have practically no compile-time performance. Flick a #define on in release mode, for example, and you get maximum inlining and slow compiles. This technique doesn't work for very simple data types since it still incurs the pimpl's dynamic memory allocation overhead on construction. Jody -- re: boost build, I'd recommend checking out their specific mailing list. It's hard to get started, and error messages are frequently very misleading, but it's the best C++ build tool I've seen yet. Regards, Matthew Herrmann

[ANN] Testing Boost: a Design and Planning Sprint
by David Abrahams 04 Apr '07

04 Apr '07

At BoostCon'07, Rene Rivera is going to be leading a sprint sesion on improving Boost's testing systems http://www.boostcon.com/program/sessions#rivera-testing-sprint I'm really, really excited about this session. There's a lot we can (and need to) accomplish, and IMO this is just the right way to get started. [Review] Quantitative Units
by K. R. Walker 04 Apr '07

04 Apr '07

Hello, This review of Quantitative Units is by Shaun Bloom and K. R. Walker of Stellar Science Ltd. Co. We have been following this library for approximately two months as we are developing a new scientific application and have committed to using compile-time dimensional analysis where possible. > What is your evaluation of the design? We believe the design is good. We understand the basic concepts of systems, dimensions, units, and quantities and could manipulate these items. > What is your evaluation of the implementation? We have been happy with the implementation. Some of our template-metaprogrammers have been able to dig into the source to figure out what's going on without spending much time. > What is your evaluation of the documentation? It's been a while since we thoroughly looked over the documentation. We tend to prefer looking over the source code and examples. A brief look at the current documentation revealed no surprises. > What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? This library performs compile-time dimensional analysis along with helping to clarify and enforce API parameters and elements: function( const quantity< length > & ) is better than function( const double & ) At an early stage, we discovered a minor error in our software after starting to use this library. This library provides greater confidence in calculations making the pervasive use of this library highly desirable. Our application domain involves working with vectors in different frames-of-reference. We have recently discussed the possibility of defining our own unit systems for these frames to prevent vectors in one frame from being incorrectly used with vectors of another. e.g., an Earth-Centered-Inertial (ECI) vector should not be added to an Orbital-frame vector. > Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? > Did you have any problems? We have been using version 0.7.2 of this library with Visual Studio 2005 (sp1) and gcc 4.0.1 on Mac OS X. We have defined our own custom units and found their use to be identical to those provided by the library. We would like to see quantities defined using derived SI units printed using the derived units instead of the base units (W/m^2 instead of Kg/s^3). We had a problem with the 'pascal' symbol with Visual Studio 2005. It's since been resolved. The only other problems have involved mistakes in unit arithmetic when defining values. > How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? > A quick reading? In-depth study? We looked closely at this library in it's early state and decided that even in alpha, it was worth integrating into our software. Our evaluation has been much more than a quick reading, but a bit less than an in-depth study. > Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? Yes, we have experience writing scientific software applications and understand and can perform dimensional analysis. > Do you think the library should be accepted as a Boost library? > Be sure to say this explicitly so that your other > comments don't obscure your overall opinion. Yes. We would very much like to see this library become part of Boost. In the unfortunate event it were not accepted, we intend to continue to use the library. Thank you, -- Shaun Bloom <sb(a)stellarscience.com> K. R. Walker <krwalker(a)stellarscience.com> Stellar Science Ltd Co - Stellar Scientific Software Solutions
