Boost binary serialization, patch proposal for cross architectures compatibility
by Steve Gury 11 Feb '07

11 Feb '07

Hi, I'm a user of boost serialization and I've detected a small lack in inter-architecture compatibility. Issue: The C and C++ programming languages have different native storage of standard type depending on the architecture of the operating system. For example: On a Linux 64bits (LP64), a long variable is stored with 8 bytes but on a Windows 32bits (ILP32) that same variable will be stored with 4 bytes. Using boost binary serialization as common format for data exchange between those different systems won't work fine. I've written a small patch to fix this issue. Change: _ Detect if binary serialized data come from a system with different native architecture by reading the header. Even if archive is created with the flag "no_header", the architecture signature is stored. _ Change the way how std::string (char*, and other) are stored. We have to store the string's length as a fixed size type (I've chosen unsigned int) and not size_t (which is an unsigned integer of 64bits on 64bits architecture and of 32bits on 32bits architecture). _ Change the way how long and unsigned long are stored by specializing template function for saving and loading. _ All those changes have been protected by a "#define BOOST_CROSS_ARCHITECTURE_COMPATIBLE" I've compiled and tested this patch, on Windows XP 32bits, Debian Linux 64bits (x86_64), compiled with Visual Studio 2005 ( 8.0) and gcc 4.1 Best regards, Steve Gury PS:You can find the patch as attachment.

[Boost-bugs] [ boost-Bugs-1657243 ] Implicit graph not implement

Bugs item #1657243, was opened at 2007-02-11 14:34 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=107586&aid=1657243&group_… Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Alexey Kuznetsov (axet) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Implicit graph not implement Initial Comment: In page http://www.boost.org/libs/graph/doc/astar_search.html, say : "A* is particularly useful for searching implicit graphs". But in astar_search.hpp you can see MutableQueue with fixed element size. As result use astar search for implicit graph - imposible. MutableQueue Q(num_vertices(g), icmp, index_map); ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=107586&aid=1657243&group_… ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? If exponents of 4 are the highest you've seen, shouldn't you consider the size of (2*3*5*7*11*13*17)^4, which requires 76 bits? Also, I may want to extend the list - some people have requested a "money" unit, for example, which would be assigned the value 19 in your system. Then I can't even represent all powers of 3. I suspect this idea, while clever, does not cover the problem domain sufficiently well to be superior to lists. - James Jones Administrative Data Mgmt. [BGL] Double free error (?)
by Heiko Bauke 10 Feb '07

10 Feb '07

Hi, since a day I was fighting with a strange bug in my program. Finally, I think, I could trace down this error to a problem in the Boost graph library. The following test program crashes, in a call to boost::clear_vertex. #include <cstdlib> #include <boost/tuple/tuple.hpp> #include <boost/graph/adjacency_list.hpp> typedef boost::adjacency_list<boost::vecS, boost::vecS, boost::undirectedS> graph_t; typedef boost::graph_traits<graph_t>::vertex_descriptor vertex_descriptor; typedef boost::graph_traits<graph_t>::vertex_iterator vertex_iterator; int main() { graph_t G(8); vertex_iterator vi, vi_end, ui, ui_end; for (boost::tie(vi, vi_end)=boost::vertices(G); vi!=vi_end; ++vi) for (boost::tie(ui, ui_end)=boost::vertices(G); ui!=ui_end; ++ui) // if (*vi!=*ui) boost::add_edge(*vi, *ui, G); for (boost::tie(vi, vi_end)=boost::vertices(G); vi!=vi_end; ++vi) boost::clear_vertex(*vi, G); return EXIT_SUCCESS; } It seams to me, there is a double free error, that occurs if the adjacency_list has self-loops. If the if-statement is not commented out, the program does not crash. I am using Boost 1.33.1. [thread] patch for FAQ entry why no void* parameter
by Ulrich Eckhardt 10 Feb '07

10 Feb '07

Hi! The attached patch adds an entry to the FAQ for Boost.Thread why it doesn't take a void* or anything similar like other threading libraries do. On a related note, that file is a mixture of tabs and spaces used for prettyprinting. Uli

tr1 unordered containers
by Noah Roberts 10 Feb '07

10 Feb '07

Is anyone already working on these? I was at a class by Scott Meyers a while back and it sounded like no. It's something I am interested in doing if there is interest in getting it done and someone else isn't already there.

boost_unit_test_framework cannot be built as DLL with msvc-6.5
by Roland Schwarz 09 Feb '07

09 Feb '07

I am trying to get the regressions straight for msvc-6.5. I discovered, that some of the test's test are failing with msvc-6.5. I tracked this down to the fact, that the boost_unit_test_framework cannot be built as a DLL. In fact the compilation of compiler_log_formatter faults with error C2504 : test_suite : base class undefined altough the base class is being properly declared. I suspect that the problem is, that the base class contains some template classes which are not exported. Trying to export them unfortunately doesn't resolve the problem. I further suspect, that it isn't possible to export templated classes with msvc-6.5. But I am not sure on that. Is this a known issue? Are there any work-arounds possible? If not: 1) Should the tests be omitted for msvc-6.5? 2) Are other boost regression test affected? Roland

[interprocess] problem in boost/interprocess/detail/atomic.hpp
by Glenn Schrader 09 Feb '07

09 Feb '07

I ran across this bug while running on a 2.6.9 Linux kernel. Since that kernel version doesn't have native interprocess mutexes and condition variables the interprocess library uses some emulation code. The x86 verion of the emulated semaphore uses atomic_dec32() from atomic.hpp but that function wasn't behaving properly. The following change in oost/interprocess/detail/atomic.hpp made things work properly: BEFORE: inline boost::uint32_t atomic_dec32(volatile boost::uint32_t *mem) { unsigned char prev; asm volatile ("lock; decl %1;\n\t" "setnz %%al" : "=a" (prev) : "m" (*(mem)) : "memory", "cc"); return prev; } AFTER: inline boost::uint32_t atomic_dec32(volatile boost::uint32_t *mem) { boost::uint32_t prev; // acts like an atomic 'return (*mem)--;' asm volatile ("movl $-1, %0;\n\t" "lock; xaddl %0, %1" : "=r" (prev) : "m" (*(mem)) : "memory", "cc" ); return prev; } -glenn
