Simon, after investigating the recent kernel headers using LXR it seems that the problem may not be a recent change, but due to Linux being used on PowerPC. The FIONREAD and FIONBIO macros are not integer constants on that architecture, but the are on i386 (which is why I've never seen this before). Not sure yet of the best way to fix it, however I guess I just won't be able to use them as template parameters in portable code. Cheers, Chris

You simply use some "load balancing" technique like round-robin to allocate incoming connections to io_service objects. (Yes, it is ok to have the acceptor and the socket being accepted on different io_service objects.) Yep. Basically the approach Martin suggested is the one to use. So, in the client: - Spawn a background thread to call io_service::run() - When data arrives on the socket post it the GUI using a windows message - When you need to initiate an I/O operation, post a function object to the background thread by using io_service::post(). For the server, you can: - Use one thread per io_service object to call io_service::run(). - Allocate connections to io_services e.g. using round robin - When you want to initiate an unsolicited send on a particular connection, post a function object to that connection's io_service object. or: - Use on io_service object for all I/O, and another for managing a thread pool. - Use io_service::post() to send function objects between the objects that are associated with each io_service. I finally managed to get rid of the "intentional memory leak" that was present in the tss code. I used a reference counting technique, where the global data structures (containing boost::function objects and boost::mutex) are freed after last handler or destructor (whichever comes last) has been run. Since the order when they are run is not guaranteed, the ref counting approach should compensate for this. I have checked this in to HEAD awaiting regression results. I would be very glad if someone could do a review before commiting this to RC_1_34_0 too. I have to admit that the code does not look very beautiful, but my intent was to get it correct, without changing the logic too much to avoid introducing new bugs. N.b.: The memory leak was a major annoyance on Windows, since it makes debugging a lot harder there. Regards, Roland

Problems with default_iterator_policies

I am working on a project that foolishly embedded the first release of boost in to it's build tree and therefore has never updated boost as it evolved. Now due to an upgrade to the FreeBSD ports directory which forced a compiler upgrade on us, we have to use the current version of boost, which is no bad thing. Except, the old code made use of default_iterator_policies which does not seem to exist in the current version of boost. Is there a easy way of replacing the default_iterator_policies in our code with what ever we should now be using and if so, what is it? TIA, Pep.
