Hi all, The link to Boost Build 2 PDF documentation is broken. Has the file been generated? If yes, how to access it? If no, is it possible to start generating it? Regards, Arkadiy

Re: [boost] Interest in a statically initialized map?
by meadori＠bellsouth.net 29 Jun '06

> Quick quesiton would be, is this static or done during runtime? The creation of the map is all done at compile time. The queries on the map are done at runtime. So you can have maps like so: // namespace scope static static_map<const char*, int, 2> map = { "Will", 28, "Joe", 30 }; // class scope class foo { static static_map<const char*, int, 2> map; }; static_map<const char*, int, 2> foo::map = { "Will", 28, "Joe", 30 }; // function scope void bar() { static static_map<const char*, int, 2> map = { "Will", 28, "Joe", 30 }; } all of which are initialized with their key\value pairs at compile time. --Meador

Iterator facade < operation?
by Geoff Wedig 29 Jun '06

29 Jun '06

I have a question I'm hoping someone can answer. I've recently started using the iterator_facade class, and it's very useful, but it seems inefficient in some respects. Specifically, the < operator. According to the website docs, this uses the distance_to() function defined by the derived class. That works fine for some iterators, but not others. Often, it's possible to have much more efficient operations than that. Take for example, some data structure of sorted strings. It is not necessary to know how many elements are between two strings to know whether one is before the other. Like 'use empty() rather than size() == 0' in Meyer's _Effective STL_, it would seem that a more efficient solution can be created in many cases. So, is there a way to do this, to override iterator_facade's system, or am I missing something? I have read most of the documentation, but that doesn't mean there isn't something I overlooked. Thanks! Geoff Wedig

[any] numeric values that cast to same or more precision
by Chris Weed 29 Jun '06

29 Jun '06

Hi, It would be nice to have a custom cast for numeric values that could cast to the same or better precision. Something like the following wouldn't fail: boost::any a(3.3f) double higher_a = numeric_cast<double>(a); Chris

[system][timer] CPU timer first draft
by Beman Dawes 29 Jun '06

29 Jun '06

After years of procrastination, I've finally put together the CPU timer I've always wanted. It provides wall-clock time, user CPU time, and system CPU time. A time reporter class handles the details of display. Typical output would be: wall 0.50 s, user 0.03 s, system 0.05 s, total cpu 0.08 s, 15.6% The percentage is CPU utilization relative to wall clock. Note that I see a CPU timer as complementary rather than competitive to the high-precision timer component others are working on. I'm all for their effort to continue. My plan is to submit the CPU timer stuff as part of a Boost.System library, which packages small operating system dependent components together for convenience. There is an early version of Boost.System stuff in the vault. Go to the System directory at http://boost-consulting.com/vault/ to download system-0.1.zip. The preliminary CPU timer docs can be viewed online at http://mysite.verizon.net/beman/cpu_timer.html. Note that I did use Boost.Date_Time components. That was because I'm not very familiar with Boost.Date_Time, and wanted to initially concentrate on getting the desired results. Advice on how to best make use of Boost.Date_Time would be appreciated. Likewise, any other comments are welcome. --Beman

Interest in a checked array iterator?
by Sam Partington 29 Jun '06

29 Jun '06

Hi all, In a similar style to the 'small array count' utility that is being discussed on another thread, would people be interested in an array iterator that is bounds checked in debug builds? Similar to the STLPort debug iterators. In release builds the iterator is pointer type, and incurs no overhead. Its advantage over using boost::array is that that you don't need to specify the size of the array. It also makes using arrays with STL easier by providing begin() and end(), which I find can be error prone and unwieldy for arrays. So rather than : std::sort(&array[0], &array[size(array)]); we have : std::sort(begin(array), end(array)); Usage is shown below. Sam ---------- using namespace array; int notconst[8] = { 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 }; const int const_[8] = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 }; const int bigarray[] = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,}; std::cout << "bigarray[] has " << size(bigarray) << " ints in it.\n"; std::copy(begin(const_), end(const_), begin(notconst)); iterator<int>::type it(std::find(begin(notconst), end(notconst), 7)); if (it != end(notconst)) { *it = 8; } // this will assert on the last element output // - there are 9 elements being written into a 8 element array std::copy(begin(bigarray), end(bigarray), begin(notconst));

[1.34] Borland support status
by Nicola Musatti 29 Jun '06

29 Jun '06

Hallo, is anybody working on Borland specific issues or should all the corresponding failures be marked up as expected? On a related note: were Borland settings changed between BBv1 and BBv2? I'm under the impression that some tests pass with one but not with the other. I have to check this out more thoroughly though. Cheers, Nicola Musatti

Boost CVS not playing well with MSVC 8.0
by Dean Michael Berris 29 Jun '06

29 Jun '06

Hi Everyone, I've recently just got the courage to get the CVS source from sourceforge, and I had encountered numerous problems with building/installing it, and then actually using it -- in Windows after having working with boost for quite a while now in Linux. As the post suggests, I'm using MS Visual C++ 8.0 (the free one, which comes with the Express edition of the IDE) and here are two of the problems encountered while building: 1) Python is already installed in the system (C:\Python24) but the build system still complains about it -- tried defining PYTHON_ROOT to no avail and "--with-python-root=[]" but the flag is not recognized (and turns up an error using Boost.Jam v 2). 2) Tools not explicitly defined in documentation: I had to wade through errors and complaints from Boost.Jam to find out that I needed bison,flex,m4 among other stuff. I haven't seen any documentation requiring these tools, and it would be very much appreciated if they were conveniently expressed in documentation. (more a request/observation than anything) 3) Defaults for msvc 8.0 like directory paths, etc. had to be manually defined. Though this may be addressed with Boost.Build, I still don't have enough experience with it to actually propose a fix/workaround. The Platform SDK environment vars also had to be set, which which distributed apart from the MSVC 8.0 Express toolchain -- which might become a requirement in the future, but am too much of an MS noob to start figuring this out for now. When building, there are a lot of deprecated complaints, and even template warnings. This might have something to do with the changes from 7.1 to 8.0, though they are mostly warnings than anything else. I had encountered installation and usage issues that might be specific to MSVC 8.0, and I've summarized them below: - libs build alright, and are copied to the specified location. However, when a project built using the unit_testing_framework for example is about to link to the .lib, MSVC 8.0 looks for a file named "libboost_unit_test_framework-vc80-mt-gd-1_35.lib" but only "boost_unit_test_framework-vc-gd-1_35.lib" is available. - headers don't get copied fully when installed: I had to manually copy over a lot of the preprocessor library and the mpl library into the install directory. Any tips and pointers (and other information that you think might be helpful) will be most appreciated. I still have to figure out Boost.Jam to be able to contribute to the installation and usage problems outlined above, although I hope the above report helps. NOTE: I only uncommented "using msvc ; " in user-config.jam -- please let me know if there are other things that might be helpful to make sense of the stuff posted above. Have a great day everyone, and hope this helps! -- Dean Michael C. Re: [boost] GIL - Breeze presentation posted
by Reece Dunn 28 Jun '06

28 Jun '06

Lubomir wrote: > FYI - we just posted a 55 minute Flash presentation regarding GIL. You > may find watching it more convenient than reading the tutorial. Wow! The presentation was very informative and easy to understand. I agree with Andy, however, about locators being renamed cursors. That said... I haven't been following the GIL discussions on the mailing list, nor have I had the chance to look at the source code and try writing code in it. That said, I feel like I could start processing images in about half an hour and I don't know anything about image transformations! The presentation keeps comparing GIL to the STL and this is true. Knowing how STL works helped me understand the GIL concepts. I would really like to see this library in the next version of the standard, but I believe it is too late for C++0x. It might not be too late for TR2, and by getting GIL reviewed and in Boost (and considering it is part of the Adobe open source), having a reference implementation isn't a problem. Going on the standard alone, C++ is seen as a console/text based programming language, and this is the way that it is usually studied. Java is considered to be easier than C++ and has a standard graphical framework, allowing students to learn hte language from a graphical perspective. Now, if/when GIL becomes a part of the standard, imagine learning C++ and the first thing you do is use GIL to rotate a JPEG image, or crop it, or apply the gradient transform, ...! - Reece _________________________________________________________________ Try Live.com - your fast, personalized homepage with all the things you care about in one place. http://www.live.com/getstarted
