I may not have time for review, but just one simple question: what are the advantages/disadvantages/differences in usage with stl_container<boost::variant>? Gennadiy

[Range] Expected complexity constraints
by David Abrahams 09 May '06

09 May '06

I note that the range library still supports the following: * treating null-terminated strings as Ranges where the complexity of end(s) is O(N) * treating pairs of non-random-access iterators as Ranges where the complexity of size(p) is O(N) In my view both of these would ideally be eliminated. The argument for the latter is slightly weaker because of prcedent in the std, although the LWG is considering removing it. Possible alternatives distinguish the ranges that actually give the expected complexity: a. Provide separate concepts for O1EndRange and O1SizeRange b. Provide traits to detect has_o1_end and has_o1_size Probably you'd want to do both. By the way, you can get back O(1) for end(s) where s is a null-terminated string if you allow the end iterator to have a different type from the begin iterator... but those ranges don't play well with the standard algorithms. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting www.boost-consulting.com

Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Cannot access boost::filesystem namespace Initial Comment: Hi. I am quite new to programming, however, I decided to install the boost library as it looks very good. The first two lines of my program are: #include "boost/filesystem/operations.hpp" #include "boost/filesystem/fstream.hpp" Yet when I include the statement: using boost::filesystem; just after, I get an error message saying: "error C2873: 'boost::filesystem' : symbol cannot be used in a using-declaration" I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. Where could I have gone wrong? I have tried to find documentation that will help, but I haven't found anything. I have followed the installation to the letter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=207586&aid=1484570&group_… ------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Help! SoC registration down!
by Bernhard Reiter 09 May '06

09 May '06

Having almost finished my SoC 2006 application for boost, I notice that Google's SoC registration page gives me a 502 server error. This looks rather permanent atm; what should I do? Deadline's less than 5 hours from now! Regards, Bernhard Reiter

[intrusive_ptr] atomic ref counting?
by Eric Niebler 09 May '06

09 May '06

I'm thinking about replacing some uses of shared_ptr with intrusive_ptr, but I've got questions. One of the nice things about shared_ptr is the lock-free thread-safe ref counting. I want my intrusive_ptr to have the same safety and efficiency, but I don't see how to get it. I see $boost_root/detail/atomic_count.hpp, but shared_ptr doesn't use it. Why not? And why is it in detail/? Should I not consider using it? Taking in the bigger picture, intrusive_ptr requires people to write their own add_ref and release functions, most of which will probably end up using ++ and -- on a plain integer. This is totally broken in multi-threaded applications, right? Isn't it dangerous to not provide complementary utilities for correctly managing reference counts? It seems to me intrusive_ptr is impossible to use safely and portably. What have I missed? -- Eric Niebler Boost Consulting www.boost-consulting.com

To the release manager: Setting HEAD to 1.35 possible?
by Roland Schwarz 08 May '06

08 May '06

Would it be possible to already set the HEAD to version 1.35? Once the branch for release of a version has been made the head automatically should target the next number. Or I am missing something? Perhaps I am misunderstanding the general policy. What is the rationale for having HEAD and the latest branch for release pointing to the same version? Having different numbers would make it more comfortable having the development and release candidates in the same (install) place. Regards, Roland

[Range] suggestion
by David Abrahams 08 May '06

08 May '06

You could considerably simplify range_size by removing half of the specializations and adding this one: template <class T> struct range_size<T const> : range_size<T> {}; -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting www.boost-consulting.com
