It's only error-prone for the person trying to capture a link to the section header. The person browsing who wants to see the current context doesn't try to grab that link, so there's no error. [Boost-bugs] [ boost-Bugs-1456780 ] ambiguous overloads in boost::variant source code

Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: ambiguous overloads in boost::variant source code Initial Comment: I cannot figure out, why the following little program does not compile. It simply typedefs a variant of a specific bounded type set and then derives a class from this type. I've tried to compile it with VC 2005. It does not compile because of ambiguous overloads within the boost::variant source. It would be very helpful if somebody could shed light on the issue. Best regards Peter PS: I intended to post this to the boost developers list, but I was unable to log onto the list today. ************************************************************* #include <boost/variant.hpp> typedef boost::variant<char, int, double> numeric_type_variant; class numeric_type : public numeric_type_variant { public: /// Default constructor. numeric_type() : numeric_type_variant() { } template <typename T> /// Converting constructor. numeric_type(T const& t) : numeric_type_variant(t) { } // some more code }; int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { char ba; int bb; double bc; numeric_type a; numeric_type b(ba); numeric_type c(bb); numeric_type d(bc); a = ba; a = bb; a = bc; return 0; } ************************************************************* This is the build log: ------ Build started: Project: test_variant, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------ Compiling... test_variant.cpp c:\_ngi\toolkits\boost_1_33_1\boost\variant\variant.hpp(1342) : error C2666: 'boost::variant<T0_,T1,T2>::convert_construct' : 2 overloads have similar conversions with [ T0_=char, T1=int, T2=double ] c:\_ngi\toolkits\boost_1_33_1\boost\variant\variant.hpp(1327): could be 'void boost::variant<T0_,T1,T2>::convert_construct<char,int,double,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_,boost::detail::variant::void_>(const boost::variant<T0_,T1,T2> &,long)' with [ T0_=char, T1=int, T2=double ] c:\_ngi\toolkits\boost_1_33_1\boost\variant\variant.hpp(1258): or 'void boost::variant<T0_,T1,T2>::convert_construct<const T>(T &,int,boost::mpl::false_)' with [ T0_=char, T1=int, T2=double, T=numeric_type ] while trying to match the argument list '(const numeric_type, long)' c:\_ngi\toolkits\boost_1_33_1\boost\variant\variant.hpp(1580) : see reference to function template instantiation 'boost::variant<T0_,T1,T2>::variant<T>(const T &)' being compiled with [ T0_=char, T1=int, T2=double, T=numeric_type ] c:\_ngi\toolkits\boost_1_33_1\boost\variant\variant.hpp(1590) : see reference to function template instantiation 'void boost::variant<T0_,T1,T2>::assign<T>(const T &)' being compiled with [ T0_=char, T1=int, T2=double, T=numeric_type ] c:\_schrott\test_variant\test_variant\test_variant.cpp(36) : see reference to function template instantiation 'boost::variant<T0_,T1,T2> &boost::variant<T0_,T1,T2>::operator =<numeric_type>(const T &)' being compiled with [ T0_=char, T1=int, T2=double, T=numeric_type ] Build log was saved at "file://c:\_schrott\test_variant\test_variant\Debug\BuildLog.htm" test_variant - 1 error(s), 0 warning(s) ========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ========== ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=107586&aid=1456780&group_… ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media. [Boost-bugs] [ boost-Feature Requests-1456429 ] make portable stdint.h from boost code

Category: config Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Assigned to: John Maddock (johnmaddock) Summary: make portable stdint.h from boost code Initial Comment: There appears to be an industry-wide need for a good, portable stdint.h library, compatible with the C99 standard. boost.org has the knowledge to create such a header, based on their current stdint.hpp header and associated code. However, what is needed is a C-compatible version that could be used in any environment. boost.org would be doing developers a big favor if it could adapt its existing stdint.hpp header to a C-compatible C99 compliant stdint.h header. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=357586&aid=1456429&group_… ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media. MPC support for Boost
by Kevin Heifner 22 Mar '06

22 Mar '06

After seeing some posts about people having difficulties building Boost with bjam and Dave Abrahams comment about wishing to add Microsoft solution files as an alternative build option. OCI decided to add MPC (http://www.ociweb.com/products/mpc) support to Boost. Chad Elliott the creator of MPC put together the zip file in Boost Vault under Miscellaneous which contains the necessary files to add MPC support to Boost. Here is a little description of the addition. It would be great if this could be added to Boost and something similar to this description added to the getting started web page. Building Boost using bjam is straightforward and easy to use for those used to building applications with make. However, for those who have little or no exposure to make may find building Boost with bjam somewhat confusing or difficult. The MPC application can be used to provide an alternate build mechanism for the Boost libraries. MPC (http://www.ociweb.com/products/mpc) can generate makefiles and projects for various build tools (make, Visual C++ 6.0, Visual Studio 7.1, etc.) Allowing users to choose their favorite build tool increases the appeal of Boost. We have put together boost.mwc (a workspace), a set of mpc files (projects) and a simple perl based configure script that allows MPC to generate a usable workspace (with projects) to build various libraries located in Boost. This perl based configure script is used to set up various required environment variables and then runs MPC. It takes a few options (most (coicide with the existing configure shell script), one of which is the --with-toolset option that converts the Boost toolset into the corresponding MPC options. The result of building Boost with MPC will leave the user with a set of libraries located in a "lib" directory at the top of the boost directory tree. The libraries are named as they would be when built with bjam. The current state of the .mwc file and perl based configure script only allows building multi-threaded versions of the Boost libraries. This is not meant to replace bjam, just provide an alternate way of building Boost. Thanks, KevinH -- Kevin Heifner heifner @ ociweb.com http://heifner.blogspot.com Object Computing, Inc. [iostream] How to compress & decompress wide stream
by Marc VIALA 22 Mar '06

22 Mar '06

Hi, I would like to manage the compression & decompression of wide stream. I have already implemented this functionality for narrow stream by using Boost.Iostream, see the code snippet hereafter, but I'm really too newbie with this library to generalize with wide stream. Any and all help appreciated? <\code snippet> // Compression of narrow stream void compress(std::istream& is, std::ostream& os) { io::filtering_streambuf<io::output> out ; out.push(io::gzip_compressor()) ; out.push(os) ; io::copy(is, out) ; } // Decompression of narrow stream void decompress(std::istream& is, std::ostream& os) { io::filtering_streambuf<io::input> in ; in.push(io::gzip_decompressor()) ; in.push(is) ; io::copy(in, os) ; } <\code snippet> Marc Viala mviala(a)acticm.com

[xpressive] Range-based interface (was: Re: How about other kinds of lists...)
by João Abecasis 22 Mar '06

22 Mar '06

[moving this thread to the the main Boost list, please don't reply to Boost-Docs.] For the benefit of those who are joining us now, I'm pursuing a range-based interface for Spirit (see my post on Spirit's list http://tinyurl.com/npvnz) Eric Niebler wrote: > João Abecasis wrote: >> Also what is the rationale for singling out std::basic_string (and >> Char const *) instead of going for the more general Range concept? > > Very off-topic here, but I'm just following the TR1 regex spec. Besides, > in the future, Range won't cover Char const *. A Range-based interface > might make for a nice extension to TR1, though. For Spirit, the situation is the same. To circumvent this, I'm locally extending the Range concept to include istreams, fstreams and, when Range drops support for those, string literals. To this end, there's an extensible as_range<T> class template that is specialized to offer automatic conversion of T to a real range. Working code is available through the link above. What do you think of this? Regards, João
