Not really. Changing boost library version is probably less painful than changing compiler version, but I wouldn't do either without compelling reason. VC6 users can use boost 1.33.1 (or perhaps even 1.34), and that isn't going to suddenly stop working just because 1.35 doesn't support VC6. [bug] Error in optional's converting assignment operator

There is an error in the implementation of the converting assignment operator for optional<T>. It is currently implemented as template<class U> optional& operator= ( optional<U> const& rhs ) { this->assign(rhs.get()); return *this ; } The problem with this is that if rhs is not initialized then rhs.get() asserts. This function should be rewritten as template<class U> optional& operator= ( optional<U> const& rhs ) { if (rhs.is_initialized()) this->assign(rhs.get()); else destroy(); return *this ; } Joe Gottman

[shmem] Shmem version 0.9 available

Hi boosters! I've just uploaded the latest stable version of Shmem to boost sandbox vault (http://www.boost-consulting.com/vault/index.php?&direction=0&order=&directo…) and boost sandbox cvs HEAD. This version finishes development changes previewed with the beta version posted the last day of December. Online documentation is available also as always here: http://ice.prohosting.com/newfunk/boost/libs/shmem/doc/html/index.html I would be glad if usual Shmem users could test it to see if there are portability problems, since I've tested it in linux/gcc-4.0.1 winxp/vc7.1. This version includes since the latest stable version (2005-10-12): -> Architecture and interface rework to allow future multi-segment shared memory support. -> Bug fixes and portability enhancements. -> Shmem iostreams to write/read formatted data directly to/from shared memory vectors/strings and memory buffers. -> Intrusive and scoped ptr for shared memory (I promise shared_ptr/weak_ptr for future versions, they are not ready yet). -> Better documentation, thanks to user suggestions. [tr1] test naming issue

Hello! The current CVS version of the TR1 library has two tests named "test_complex", as the following output demonstrates: $ bjam tr1_has_tr1_array_fail -n --dump-tests | grep test_complex boost-test(COMPILE) "tr1/test_complex" : "libs/tr1/test/test_complex.cpp" boost-test(COMPILE) "tr1/std_test_complex" : "libs/tr1/test/test_complex.cpp" boost-test(COMPILE) "tr1/test_complex" : "libs/tr1/test/test_complex.cpp" There are three tests reportedly using "test_complex.cpp", and two tests named "tr1/test_complex". However, regression results at: http://engineering.meta-comm.com/boost-regression/CVS-HEAD/developer/tr1.ht… mention only one test named "test_complex". Further, the first "test_complex" comes from this loop in Jamfile: for local file in [ GLOB $(BOOST_ROOT)/libs/tr1/test : test*.cpp ] { all_rules += [ compile $(file) : <include>$(BOOST_ROOT) ] ; and the second "test_complex" comes from this loop: for local file5 in [ GLOB $(BOOST_ROOT)/libs/tr1/test/std_headers : *.cpp ] { all_rules += [ compile $(file5) Note that the output of --dump-tests reports wrong name for the second "test_complex" -- libs/tr1/test/test_complex.cpp instead of libs/tr1/test/std_headers/test_complex.cpp I looks like there are two issues in regression system: 1. --dump-tests reports wrong file name 2. The reporting tools don't handle two tests with the same name. Finally, when using Boost.Build V2, instead of above silent issues I get loud complaint right away. Here is my quick review in hope to throw in some fresh thoughts... - What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? Strings with internal buffer are quite useful and it's plainly wrong to say they aren't IMO. The "eliminate buffer overrun"-motivation is not generic enough for my taste, though. Putting fixed_stringS into STL containers (which in turn could use a custom allocator, e.g. Boost.Pool) can significantly reduce the allocation costs (and would be my no.1 use case for such a library). Thinking the above use case a bit further I would also want a cached hash value (invalidated when the string gets modified). AFAICS I would currently have to overload the whole non-const interface to implement this behaviour... Brings me to: - What is your evaluation of the design? The scope of the library should be widened to provide a policy-based general purpose strings implementation. There are a lot of enhancements that can be made in terms of strings (and memory management) -- where to but the buffer, whether the buffer has a fixed size and what to do if a string gets larger than some limit are only three aspects of it. Lots of interesting specializations come to my mind, such as a variable sized string type built upon a static buffer plus an optional dynamic buffer, intrusive hashing (as mentioned above), copy-on-write, immutable string handles, an SGI-ropes-style backend, etc (not that all these features must be implemented by the library, but the extension points for them should exist). - What is your evaluation of the documentation? Jumping from the introduction straight to *_impl stuff (BTW. I don't like these names to be part of a public interface) seems like a pretty rough transition... Generally the documentation doesn't read as smooth as the documentation of other Boost libraries (based on subjective feeling), but after other reviewers' comments have been addressed I believe it will so I won't go into further detail here. - Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? - What is your evaluation of the implementation? Didn't use the library, yet and didn't do enough source reading to judge the implementation. - How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? A glance plus reading some of the discussion around the review. - Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? Security? Not really. - Should the library be accepted as a Boost library? Generally I welcome components that increase the control over memory access/management. I think the functionality provided by the library is Boost-worthy but as a policy of a more general solution. I'm confident the author can provide it, so I vote for another review when it's done ( *duck* ;-) ). Regards, Tobias

Warnings when building boost with MSVC 8.0

Hi Everybody, I noticed a lot of warnings when I tried to build boost (version from CVS) using vc-8_0 toolset. The warnings are either because _SCL_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE was not defined and library used some "unsafe" function, or because -Og compiler option was used (this option seems to be deprecated in 8.0). I understand that it is not possible to safeguard user code from warnings caused by not defining _SCL_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE, but boost libraries cpp files could be trivially fixed, so that they do not emit it during build. These warnings look quite untidy and because there are zillions of them it seems like the build is failing. -Og option should probably be fixed in boost-build. Serialization WinCE

Configuration: Pocket PC 2003, Boost 1.32.0, Visual Studio 2005 Serialization does not work with WinCE, as <locale> is not present. Is there a work around or has it been fixed in a later release? I have rejoined this group after a few years and I am not if this issue has been addressed. Googling on Boost mailing lists drew a blank on this subject.
