[Announce] Boost 1.33 released
by Douglas Gregor 06 Dec '05

06 Dec '05

Boost 1.33.1, the latest version of peer-reviewed, portable C++ libraries, has been released. This is a bug fix release addressing many small problems with the 1.33.0 release. It is a recommended upgrade for all users of Boost 1.33.0. Boost is available at http://www.boost.org Updated Libraries include: * Any Library: Cast to reference types introduced in 1.33.0 is now documented on any_cast documentation page. * Config Library: Don't undef BOOST_LIB_TOOLSET after use. * Boost.Python: o The build now assumes Python 2.4 by default, rather than 2.2 o Support Python that's built without Unicode support o Support for wrapping classes with overloaded address-of (&) operators * Smart Pointer Library: Fixed problems under Metrowerks CodeWarrior on PowerPC (Mac OS X) with inlining on, GNU GCC on PowerPC 64. * Regex Library: Fixed the supplied makefiles, and other small compiler specific changes. Refer to the regex history page for more information on these and other small changes. * Iostreams Library: Improved the interface for accessing a chain's components, added is_open members to the file and file descriptor devices, fixed memory-mapped files on Windows, and made minor changes to the documentation. * Functional/Hash Library: Fixed the points example. * Multi-index Containers Library: Fixed a problem with multithreaded code, and other minor changes. Refer to the library release notes for further details. * Graph Library: o Fixed a problem with the relaxed heap on x86 Linux (fixes bug in dijkstra_shortest_paths). o Fixed problems with cuthill_mckee_ordering and king_ordering producing no results. o Added color_map parameter to dijkstra_shortest_paths. * Signals Library: Fixed problems with the use of Signals across shared library boundaries. * Thread library: read_write_mutex has been removed due to problems with deadlocks. * Wave library (V1.2.1) Fixed a couple of problems, refer to the change log for further details. Supported Compilers Boost is tested on a wide range of compilers and platforms. Since Boost libraries rely on modern C++ features not available in all compilers, not all Boost libraries will work with every compiler. The following compilers and platforms have been extensively tested with Boost, although many other compilers and platforms will work as well. For more information, see the regression test results. New for this release: Support for building with the newest STLport-5.0 was added. The support includes building with MinGW Runtime 3.8 plus STLport-5.0 improved to support wide character operations. Apple GCC 4.0, HP Tru64 C++, and Microsoft Visual C++ 8.0 are supported platforms. We have added an experimental autoconf-like configure script for Unix-like systems: run configure --help for more information. * Apple GCC 3.3, 4.0 on Mac OS X. * Borland C++ 5.6.4 on Windows. * GNU C++ 2.95.3 (with and without STLport), 3.2.x., 3.3.x, 3.4.x, 4.0.x on Windows, Linux and Solaris. * HP C++ for Tru64 UNIX 7.1. * Intel C++ 8.1, 9.0 on Windows, Linux. * Metrowerks CodeWarrior 8.3, 9.4, 9.5 on Mac OS X and Windows. * Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 (sp5, with and without STLport), 7.0, 7.1, 8.0. Note: Boost does not support the non-standard "Safe" C++ Library shipping with Visual C++ 8.0, which may result in many spurious warnings from Boost headers and other standards- conforming C++ code. To suppress these warnings, define the macro _SCL_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE. Acknowledgements Douglas Gregor managed this release. A great number of people contributed their time and expertise to make this release possible. Special thanks go to Aleksey Gurtovoy and Misha Bergal, who managed to keep the regression testing system working throughout the release process; David Abrahams, Beman Dawes, Aleksey Gurtovoy, Bronek Kozicki, Rene Rivera and Jonathan Turkanis for greatly improving the quality of this release; Rene Rivera for the new Boost web page design; and Zoltan "cad" Juhasz for the new Boost logo.

How do we handle incompatible versions?
by Daryle Walker 06 Dec '05

06 Dec '05

Just glancing at the serialization documentation.... The (member) function templates for serialize or save & load include an argument for the version. Where does this number come from? I guess the core routines insert a zero for that argument, unless overridden by a BOOST_CLASS_VERSION statement with a new number for a particular type. A type can conditionally change how it serializes based on the given version number. The examples show how to conditionally work with older versions in a backwards compatible fashion. But how should a serialization routine act if the version number given is too high? There doesn't seem to be a special exception for it. (The "unsupported_version" exception refers to the edition of the core routines, not a specific type's serialization.) -- Daryle Walker Mac, Internet, and Video Game Junkie darylew AT hotmail DOT com

[date_time] patch for MSVC 6

Could we have some quick documentation for the automatic unit test macros?
by Daryle Walker 06 Dec '05

06 Dec '05

[I don't know if the 1.33.1 trial has changed anything here.] The automatic unit test macros look interesting. There are even mentioned in the release notes for the Test library in 1.33.0. Unfortunately, that mention is the _sole_ appearance of those macros in the documentation. Even if the author can't afford to write a 20 page dissertation on those macros, a quick & dirty usage guide as an e-mail on this list would be appreciated. At least then the next programmer can Goggle for help. The macros listed are: BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE_TEMPLATE BOOST_FIXTURE_TEST_CASE BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE_EXPECTED_FAILURES BOOST_AUTO_TEST_SUITE BOOST_AUTO_TEST_SUITE_END BOOST_AUTO_TEST_MAIN (and BOOST_AUTO_UNIT_TEST which is now a depreciated synonym for BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE). On a related note, what are the required files from Boost.Test needed to link these helpers with my test programs. The release notes mentioned a change in the included components but I don't think the page with the actual list changed. -- Daryle Walker Mac, Internet, and Video Game Junkie darylew AT hotmail DOT com

[boost.python] GCC >=4 "-fvisibility=hidden" patch
by Jason Kankiewicz 05 Dec '05

05 Dec '05

Boost.Python's sources only deal with GCC's "-fvisibility=hidden" option for versions [3.5 - 3.9]. It should also work properly when built with GCC 4 and higher. The attached patches to boost/python/detail/config.hpp and boost/python/module_init.hpp enable it to do so. Tested with GCC 4.0 (XCode 2.2) on OSX 10.4.3 (Tiger). -- Jason Kankiewicz Advanced Publishing Technology, Inc. [graph][1.33.1] Failure in layout_test
by Martin Wille 05 Dec '05

05 Dec '05

Hi, layout_test of Boost.Graph fails on all the toolsets for which I run tests. The exit status is 139, which means segmentation violation. ltrace shows that for gcc 3.4.4 and for gcc 4.0.2 operator new() gets called countless times before the crash, and that for gcc 3.3.6 std::__default_alloc_template<true, 0>::allocate(unsigned int) gets called similarly often.
