Compare the C file API. The simplest way to read and write a struct to a file, is with a simple call to fread/fwrite. That means too many people just read and writes structs to file as binary, and then hit problems when the next compiler release changes the struct layout. Otherwise it depends on: - sizeof(int) (16,32,64 bits) - endianness - representation of double (IEEE or IBM) ... and that's just the obvious, real-world, differences that can be encountered TODAY. The only safe datatype for transport over a socket is an array of unsigned char with a defined layout. Thus we would need somethink like: message* m = ...; std::vector<unsigned char> mbuf; mbuf.reserver(sizeof(m)+m->c_size); mbuf.push_back( m->a & 0xff ); mbuf.push_back( (m->a >> 8) & 0xff ); pushDouble( mbuf, m->b ); // pushDouble decodes the double and pushes // the bytes of a IEEE double onto mbuf. etc This looks like an application for something like serialization. For example, the result of right shifting a negative number is implementation defined and something more subtle is required for real portability. (Something like serialization, rather than the same as, because the user needs to specify "this field is 16 bits", "this field is 32 bits" independant of the size of the datatype used to store the field). http://www.boost.org/doc/html/program_options/overview.html#id1247613 has the line pd.add("output-file", 2).add_optional("input-file", -1); which is not supported. Only void add(...) exists. pd.add("output-file", 2) pd.add("input-file", -1); would be correct I think. matt.

I think what I'll want to do, for a first cut, is always produce 64-bit literals for 64-bit capable compilers. I'm going to wait until after the review period to start on fixing the 64-bit support. Since I don't have a local 64-bit compiler I'll be working blind and my first few efforts will be dead wrong. At an initial glance it looks like 64-bit support should be achievable without heroic efforts. But it certainly won't come along for free. Thanks again Reece. Scott Schurr

Futures

Hi, I uploaded a new version of the futures library to the boost vault. http://tinyurl.com/9lws4 Just a remainder, futures execute functions in separate threads. Later the future can be used to retrieve the result of the function. The major change is the addition of iterators over futures. Last time some people complained during the discussion that there were operators missing which they needed for combining futures. So instead of adding more operators I added iterators which can be used to implement almost any combination of futures. simple_future<int> f1 = bind(fac, 4); simple_future<int> f1 = bind(fac, 6); simple_future<int> f1 = bind(fac, 8); future<int> f = f1 || f2 || f3; for(future<int>::iterator it = f.begin(); f.end() != it; ++it){ cout << *it << endl; // prints fac(4), fac(6) and fac(8) if(*it > XXX) break; } That way, you can wait for as many futures to finish as you want and you can decide while waiting, for how many you want to wait. I've seen errors like this that were removed by changing all of the literals in the file to unsigned by appending a 'u'. I suspect that there's a problem with the size of the literals on the 64-bit compilers. Does one declare a 64-bit literal by appending a double L ('LL')? If so, then I'll give that a try. Thanks. [quickbook] chapters and sections

Hi, I just realized that quickbook does not have chapters! Looking at the boostbook.xml output, I see many chapters. In quickbook, a whole qbk is regarded as one whole chapter. I was wondering why we were generating a 2 level deep hierarchy of html pages. Deeper than that, the sub- sections are placed within it's parent section's html page. With chapters, we have more structure. Fortunately, this is easy to fix. I can easily add a [chapter title], [endchapter] markup built on top of the section mechanism. Actually, I can even do this without necessitating syntax change by simply assuming the outermost [section] as chapters. Your thoughts?
