Bug in boost::rational, no Boolean conversion; an operator template suggestion
by Daryle Walker 22 Aug '05

22 Aug '05

I'm writing a class template where the template parameter is a type that should represent real numbers. It started choking when using boost::rational when I needed Boolean conversion, e.g. template < typename T > void my_class<T>::my_func() { if ( this->s_ ) //... } Looking at boost::rational, I noticed that it does NOT have a Boolean conversion operator (i.e. an unspecified numeric/pointer type). Before anyone says that's proper, realize that boost::rational DOES have "operator not()" defined! This is a surprise to the typical C++ programmer. Either both should be defined, or neither. I think that boost::rational should add a Boolean conversion. (It's a quick fix, and it is critical, so it should be done for this release.) Incidentally, maybe we should define another helper template for <boost/operators.hpp>. If a type supports default construction and equality via "operator ==()", then a Boolean conversion and "operator not()" will be added. (It's up to the user to make sure the type is numeric and the default value is equivalent to zero.) -- Daryle Walker Mac, Internet, and Video Game Junkie darylew AT hotmail DOT com

Re: [boost] Should we add two simple character-to-Unicode converters?
by Graham 22 Aug '05

22 Aug '05

Hi, Both: int_fast32_t char_to_Unicode( char c ); int_fast32_t wchar_to_Unicode( wchar_t c ) will require processing of surrogates on order to be Unicode 4 compliant. A Unicode library is currently under development that will give access to the surrogate ranges directly from the ucd to allow this to be done properly. Please bear with us. [Repost][RFC] Alternative any design
by Pablo Aguilar 22 Aug '05

22 Aug '05

I posted this the same day 1.33 was released, but got no reply, I'd like to think it was due to bad timing rather than lack of interest. Any comments are welcome... ---- Original post ---- Hi, First of all, thanks to everyone who's commented on the proposed any alternative. Given that the alignment issue doesn't seem to be easy to solve, I'm thinking of giving up on trying to align correctly, and just skip the "in place storing of value" optimization when it might be an issue. So I'm wondering, is the following a proper way to detect alignment problems? <code> typedef void* any_buffer_base_type; // could be customized int const ANY_BUFFER_SIZE = sizeof(any_buffer_base_type); union object_holder { char buffer[ANY_BUFFER_SIZE]; void* pointer; any_buffer_base_type alignment_dummy_; }; template<typename T> struct optimize { enum { T_size_ = sizeof(T) , base_size_ = sizeof(any_buffer_base_type) , size_ok_ = (T_size_ <= base_size_) , T_align_ = alignment_of<T>::value , base_align_= alignment_of<any_buffer_base_type>::value , align_ok_ = ((base_align_ % T_align_) == 0) , value = size_ok_ && align_ok_ }; }; </code> I looked at Optional's alignment tecnique, and couldn't come up with how to use it, given that the stored type for any changes at runtime. If there's something I missed about this, any help would be welcome. My current solution is to use the above shown code (assuming it works, of course!), and fall back on heap based storage when optimization is deemed not possible. The 2nd question I had to ask is, how should any's alignment type be specified, with a configuration macro or through a template parameter? I haven't posted an updated version, given that there's some issues (other than alignment) still requiring attention. Thanks in advance for any help you might provide, Pablo Aguilar

Suggestion for serialization
by Scott Woods 21 Aug '05

21 Aug '05

Hi, I've been using a small family of templates that simplify the use of serialization. It's nothing tricky but it has a nice effect on application-level code. Rather than (from serialization tutorial); int main() { // create and open a character archive for output std::ofstream ofs("filename"); boost::archive::text_oarchive oa(ofs); // create class instance const gps_position g(35, 59, 24.567f); // write class instance to archive oa << g; // close archive ofs.close(); // ... some time later restore the class instance to its orginal state // create and open an archive for input std::ifstream ifs("filename", std::ios::binary); boost::archive::text_iarchive ia(ifs); // read class state from archive gps_position newg; ia >> newg; // close archive ifs.close(); return 0; } It could instead be expressed; int main() { // create and open a character archive for output // create class instance // write class instance to archive // close archive persistent<gps_position>( "filename", gps_position( 35, 59, 24.567f ) ); // ... some time later restore the class instance to its orginal state // create and open an archive for input // read class state from archive persistent<gps_position> g( "filename" ); // do something with g return 0; } Basic technique goes like; template<typename T> struct persistent : public T { typedef T persistent_type; std::string name; persistent( const std::string &s ) : name( s ) { load(); } persistent( const std::string &s, const persistent_type &initial ) : persistent_type( initial ), name( s ) { save(); } virtual ~persistent() { save(); } bool load() { std::ifstream ifs(name.c_str(), std::ios::binary); boost::archive::text_iarchive ia(ifs); ... } bool save() { std::ofstream ofs(name.c_str()); // Binary flag? boost::archive::text_oarchive oa(ofs); ... } }; I haven't listed my own code as it is much more lengthy. It includes finer control over the loading+saving automation (the implementation above is simplistic) and adds to the set of methods available, e.g. "blank" (delete the underlying file image). Its also non-boostified. This is just syntactic sugar for serialization (that would be caramelization?). Its also seems to be a useful example of generic coding. If anyone is interested in my header just mail me directly. Cheers, Scott ps: Some typos in serialization docs; 1. Strange grammar? "Depending on this context, this might used implement object persistence" 2.Spelling "are needed to associate a data item name with the correspoding xml tag"

[bjam] Trouble With Getting Started
by Rob Stewart 21 Aug '05

21 Aug '05

Like some others writing recently, I found that http://www.boost.org/more/getting_started.html doesn't paint the whole picture. In step five, the table describing the actions was a bit confusing. Some options were described with "<something>" values and others with "SOMETHING" values. I thought the latter were e-var references at first. Also in that table, there is mention of cygwin as a special case. Elsewhere, only *nix and windows are mentioned. Is cygwin considered *nix or windows in those other contexts? Another confusing aspect is where one should "install" boost. Upon downloading the tarball, where should one expand it? Once done, where should one tell bjam to install the files and how does that relate to where the tarball was expanded? There is no mention of the possible to simply install the header-only libraries. Perhaps that's not a supported option, but it should be. At the very least, there should be a way to install just the headers, without building any libraries, even if that includes headers for libraries that require a library. Then, folks can "install" Boost quickly, start using the header-only libraries and then, if desirable, go back and build the needed libraries. This would avoid the need to specify a toolset I think, so invoking bjam would be much simpler. Now for the real problem: When I ran bjam -sTools=gcc --prefix=d:/dev/boost install, I was surprised to find that bjam wouldn't create that directory. I created the directory and reran the command. Much to my chagrin, it then couldn't create d:/dev/boost/lib. I created that directory and reran the command. Finally, I thought, it needed but couldn't create "bin." Not "d:/dev/boost/bin" or some other fully qualified directory, but "bin." I tried creating d:/dev/boost/bin, but that didn't help. I didn't try creating $PWD/bin because I didn't really want files there. Since http://www.boost.org/more/getting_started.html doesn't mention a bin directory, I didn't know where else to create it. So, I could't seem to get bjam to build anything and it wasn't helping me to understand what was wrong. The error message was simple: MkDir1 bin spawn: No such file or directory This was in cygwin, so perhaps there's some confusion as to what should be on my path. At present, it's pretty simple: ~/bin:/bin:/usr/bin. Does bjam need more than that? If so, what? I don't know what MkDir1 is, so I was at somewhat of a loss. On a lark, I decided to set --builddir and rerun the command. I set it to d:/tmp/build and tried again. Lo and behold! It almost worked. The error then read: MkDir1 d:\tmp\build\bin spawn: No such file or directory That immediately made me wonder three things: 1. Why couldn't bjam create the bin subdirectory? 2. Why did bjam need to create a bin subdirectory instead of just using the directory I specified using --builddir? 3. Why didn't the error message indicate that "bin" was the --builddir value so I could know which parameter to manipulate? Well, the dance wasn't over yet. The next directory bjam wanted, but couldn't create was d:/tmp/build/bin/boost! Yes, I created that directory and tried again. Next I had to create d:/tmp/build/bin/boost/libs. Then it was d:/tmp/build/bin/boost/libs/date_time. I created that directory, too. Finally, I got this message: MkDir1 d:\tmp\build\bin\boost\libs\date_time\boost_date_time.dll spawn: No such file or directory At that point, I gave up. (No doubt I should have given up sooner!) Adding insult to injury were the interminable waits while bjam figured out over and over what needed to be done. Clearly, this isn't how things are supposed to work. Boostbook Trouble Again

I updated from the latest CVS today and I am having trouble building docs. I get the same errors from a fresh checkout. I followed the steps for automatic setup at http://www.boost.org/doc/html/boostbook/getting/started.html Still trying to build NTP docs. I got through most of my syntax errors before hitting this. I was having difficulty with getting Doxygen invoked for the reference portions and thought the auto-setup would help.
