[1.33.0] Partial thaw on branch for fixing the remaining failures
by Doug Gregor 02 Aug '05

02 Aug '05

The RC_1_33_0 branch is partially thawed so that we can fix the remaining failures for release. I've started the regression notifications again, this time on the release branch: when no more failures show up, we release. Library authors: for any failures that you will not fix, mark them as expected failures on the branch. If you believe there is a configuration problem on one of the test machines, write to the list to say what you think is going on and we'll try to get it fixed. The list of issues we need to fix before we can release is here: http://engineering.meta-comm.com/boost-regression/CVS-RC_1_33_0/ developer/issues.html Doug

[1.33.0] 300+ Broken links
by Jonathan Turkanis 01 Aug '05

01 Aug '05

Hi, I ran a shareware HTML link checker on release candidate 1, and found 334 broken links; I'm attaching the report. A few of them appear bogus ("Error: invalid syntax"), and some appear to reflect the temporary unavailability of news.gmane.org, but most appear legitimate. I'll volunteer to fix as many of them as I can, if it's not too late to make it into the relapse. Some I can't fix, because I don't know where they're supposed to point. Here are the affected areas of Boost: Libraries: - compatibility - conversion - crc - date_time - disjoint_sets - filesystem - format - function - graph - hash - iterator - math - minmax - multi_index - numeric/conversion - numeric/interval - numeric/ublas - parameter - preprocessor - property_map - ptr_container - python - random - range - rational - regex - serialization - smart_ptr - spirit - test - threads - timer - tuple - type_traits - utility - variant - wave Tools: - build (v1 + v2) - boostbook Misc: - index.htm - doc/html/index.html - doc/html/who_s_using_boost_.html - doc/html/who_s_using_boost_/open.html - more/discussion_policy.htm - more/mailing_lists.htm - more/test_policy.htm - more/background.html - more/bibliography.html - more/cpp_committee_meetings.html - more/error_handling.html - more/formal_review_schedule.html - more/generic_exception_safety.html - more/generic_programming.html - more/getting_started.html - more/regression.html - more/version_history.html - more/writingdoc/template/definitions.html - people/darin_adler.htm - people/dietmar_kuehl.htm - people/jonathan_turkanis.htm - people/mark_rodgers.htm - people/people.htm - people/ralf_w_grosse_kunstleve.htm - people/vesa_karvonen.htm Jonathan

Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Amir Taaki (genjix) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Perl style foreach iterating Initial Comment: somewhere in boost, there should be a perl style foreach iterator, like so #define ITERATOR(obj) typeof(obj.begin()) #define foreach(v,i) for(ITERATOR(v) i = v.begin() ; i != v.end() ; i++) genjix at gmail.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Duilio J. In fact, there is something much better, take a look at this article: http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=400651 About your submission, it's not a patch, is more like a feature request, so this is not the correct place to post it. VC8?
by Daryle Walker 01 Aug '05

01 Aug '05

I don't use Visual C++, but people here talk like VC8 is still in beta. So why are we treating it like a supported compiler? Shouldn't we wait for VC8 to be finalized? (That means telling users to wait until 1.34 or stay with VC7.1.) Aren't there several VC8 betas being used by people here? -- Daryle Walker Mac, Internet, and Video Game Junkie darylew AT hotmail DOT com

Re: [boost] singleton and thread safety

----Original Message---- From: Jason Hise [mailto:chaos@ezequal.com] Sent: 01 August 2005 02:35 To: boost(a)lists.boost.org Subject: [boost] singleton and thread safety > I need to ensure that certain objects (specifically the policy bundles > which manage singleton instances) are created in a thread-safe manner. > First question: Can two threads both initialize the same static > variable if they pass through the same function at the same time? Ex: > > void foo ( ) > { > static Thing t; > } > > Can t's constructor be called twice by two threads executing foo? The standard is silent on the issue (because it doesn't address threading). You would need to consult the documentation of each supported compiler. I can't find the documentation for VC7.1, but looking at the generated code, it appears that t's constructor CAN be called twice. > If so, I feel that I need to construct my policy bundles before > execution enters main, a time when it is pretty much guaranteed that > the application is operating in a single-threaded context. However, the standard appears to > say that initialization of such global variables can happen after main > is entered, so long as it happens before the global variable is used. # It does say that. In practise (and ignoring DLLs), no implementation takes advantage of that freedom. This is because it is quite easy to set up situations where A must be initialized before B, but B must also be initialized before A. (If the initialization occurs before main(), then the guarantees which cause the problem don't apply). > If the program starts > spawning threads before the global variable is constructed I would > still have the same problem. > > How can I ensure that initialization is performed before main is > entered? It is almost certainly safe to assume that globals are initialized before main is entered (ignoring dynamic libraries). If you don't want to ignore dynamic libraries, I am not sure how to proceed (except to say that it is tricky)! > If I cannot, is there some other way to make initialization > of static variables thread-safe?
