Let me sketch what I have in mind: The part of adding/removing indices at run time is not too hard: I haven't written any actual code, but the design of that feature seems reasonably straightforward to me. Some speed/space performance will be lost, but I guess this is expected. The hard part, IMHO, is how to gain access to such indices. Clearly some kind of runtime polymorhpisn is involved for a dynamic_multi_index_container to have any use: otherwise, the user code would have to know the exact type of the index it is retrieving. So we need something more powerful than the current static get<> interface. A possibility is to retrieve indices by mean of *interfaces* as defined in Jonathan Turkanis' BIL library: http://www.kangaroologic.com/interfaces/libs/interfaces/doc/ This interface concept provides the needed run-time polymorphism without having to cast the index classes into a rigid abstract hierarchy. This would allow the user to tune the polymorphic functionality exposed by indices from the most general (iteration) to the most concrete (for instance, set-like functionality, so restricting the type of acceptable indices that can go into the container) only by defining the interface to which the indices must conform. Of course, this is just a bunch of random thoughts and the BIL library is not part as of yet of Boost, so I don't think I'll be ready to provide something until mid 2006 or so. Moreover, it's still to be seen whether a dynamic_multi_index_container is of interest to the Boost community. > > I am working on something unrelated to this discussion that could > form a > good foundation for table<>. I'll be reading your table<> material as soon as you make it available. Soon I'll be on a three-week vacation, so I might have some time to write my ideas about a dynamic_multi_index_container in a more structured way. [1.33.0] Branch for release
by Doug Gregor 28 Jul '05

28 Jul '05

We've now branched for the 1.33.0 release. The branch is RC_1_33_0. The main trunk is open for changes, now, but I'd urge everyone to be somewhat cautious while we're dedicating our testing resources to the branch. Doug

MPL: for_each missing from ref manual
by Brian Braatz 28 Jul '05

sorry, (for the poor timing) I just noticed mpl::for_each does NOT seem to be in the MPL reference manual. it does appear in mpl_paper.pdf, but I could not find it anywhere else (grepped the html)

Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Build is very slow with VC6 Initial Comment: Since I start using boost libriaires in my project, it takes about 20 second to build each of my cpp file (less than 1 sec before using boost). I have included all needed headers in stdafx.h and nowhere else, and it is still so long. Can someone help me to build faster. [getting started] outdated info about Boost.Serialization
by JOAQUIN LOPEZ MU?Z 28 Jul '05

28 Jul '05

Hello, the section on autolinking in the getting started page, as it appears in http://boost-consulting.com/boost/more/getting_started.html#auto-link states that Boost.Serialization is not autolinkable nor dynamically linkable. I think this is no longer true starting with Boost 1.33. If so, maybe the release manager will accept that this bit be changed before packing up (I can't do the change myself, though.) [Regression Testing][1.33.0] Intel C++ 9.0?
by Aleksey Gurtovoy 28 Jul '05

The following message is a courtesy copy of an article that has been posted to gmane.comp.lib.boost.testing as well. Is there a reason why Intel C++ 9.0, being the latest released version of that compiler, is not on the list of the required toolsets? -- Aleksey Gurtovoy MetaCommunications Engineering

Re: [boost] Call for interest for native unicode character and string support in boost
by Graham 28 Jul '05

28 Jul '05

Hi, I enclose a basic set of headers [in a single file for simplicity at this stage] so that the set of functions to provide Unicode character data can be discussed. I believe that the core functions calls will probably end up using functions pointers so that different DLLs can use the same functionality and still have the implementation be transparent, and that the function pointers will the retrieved during an initialise call. Does anybody have any strong opinions on this? Once the Unicode.h contents are agreed then I hope - if it is agreed quickly - to implement the necessary data generators to implement it. Once that is done then a string implementation should be fairly quick to implement. I welcome comments. Yours, Graham Barnett BEng, MCSD/ MCAD .Net, MCSE/ MCSA 2003, CompTIA Sec+
