Links to deprecated and outdated mailing archives
by Pavel Chikulaev 21 Jul '05

Hi all, There is a link to deprecated mail archive MailMan Archive http://lists.boost.org/MailArchives/boost/ (That page explicitly says that it's deprecated and there is no new messages since 2 April 2005) at http://boost-consulting.com/boost/more/mailing_lists.htm#main. Also page http://www.mail-archive.com/boost%40lists.boost.org/ mentioned at the same page at boost.org doesn't seem up to date (Last message dated 4 September 2003). These links should be removed isn't it? And search from the home page at doesn't look working good - it seems like it actually searching all the archives (they should be identical isn't?) and sometimes a search lead to these archives. This should be changed IMO. -- Pavel Chikulaev

Policy is type orthogonal. And > btw I don't think traits-based solution will work here. I most definitely > may want different threading policies for the same singleton type in > different circumstances. > why not simply pass the category as a template parameter: struct MyCategory ; namespace boost { namespace singleton { template < > struct threading_policy < MyCategory > { typedef multi_threaded type; }; } } // close namespace void test ( ) { singleton_ptr < MySingletonType,MyCategory > ptr; } you can have the same category for many type but also many category for one type. if you really want no policy in the type declaration, you can provide a default who would search for a type declared category as in your code (I am not very understandable I think, perhaps the following code while be more explicit): struct defaultcategory; tempate< class T, class category_param = defaultcategory > class singleton_ptr { typedef mpl::if< mpl::IsSame<category_param,defaultcategory>, category<T>::type, category_param>::type the_category; ... }; the syntaxe is perhaps not correct but it's the principe who count. so you can use: struct another_type; template<> category<another_type> { typedef MT_category type; }; int main() { singleton_ptr<MyType> a_defaut_singleton; singleton_ptr<another_type> a_MT_singleton; singleton_ptr<MyType,MT_category> another_MT_singleton; } perhaps it don't work, or it's stupid, but perhaps it can help you. My ports being scanned by boost.sourceforge.net?
by Pavel Chikulaev 21 Jul '05

21 Jul '05

Hi all, I've got a software firewall installed on my Windows XP machine, and while surfing www.boost.org I've received Attack detection report that said that boost.sourceforge.net(66.35.250.209) was scanning my ports (3953, 3943, 3889, 3881, 3835, 3826). What can it be? Any thoughts? -- Pavel Chikulaev

[serialization] Why can't hyphens appear in NVP's?
by Jonathan Turkanis 21 Jul '05

21 Jul '05

Hi, I'm using the serialization library for the first time. Everything works pretty nicely, but I'm a little surprised that I can't use hyphens in the first component of a name-value pair. What's the purpose of this restriction? As long as the hyphen is not the first character of a name, it should correspond to perfectly legal XML. Jonathan

I can only imagine there is an optimization issue here, but I don't have Windows and thus can't test the Windows compiler. :-/ Jens Maurer

[serialization] using non-intrusive load and save
by Jonathan Turkanis 21 Jul '05

21 Jul '05

Hi, What's the recommended way to spit non-intrusive serialization into two functions? It looks like I could use tag dispatch with the nested metafunction is_saving or is_loading, but I want to give a very simple example of non-intrusive serialization. Also, is there any reason that instances of these metafunctions aren't convertible to bool, like the boolean metafunctions from type_traits and mpl? Jonathan

Minor bug in shared_ptr documentation
by Joe Gottman 21 Jul '05

21 Jul '05

The documentation for the shared_ptr default constructor has the following sentence in the Effects clause: "Empty shared_ptr objects have an unspecified use_count." This is no longer true, since the default constructor now includes the postcondition that use_count() == 0. Joe Gottman

Re: [boost] Interest in a binary_int template for binary literals?
by Scott Schurr 20 Jul '05

20 Jul '05

Greetings, I've placed the binary_int template in the Boost sandbox at Sourceforge. I've also included a crude unit test and a rough shot at documentation. I'd like to thank Pavel Vozenilek for his improvements on the template and for his guidance through the Boost process. I'm going to be on vacation for the next week (until July 25th). So if you send comments I'll get back to you after I return. Thanks for your attention. Scott Schurr
