Initial Comment: We opened a VC6 project, that uses Boost libraries, in VS .Net 2003. It compiles properly, but fails to link. Hello, With the recent change to strict_ansi mode, Compaq C++ compiler is stumping into some problems. Currently, Boost.Serialization fails to build because of the following: http://tinyurl.com/7cacb This is a reduced form of the layout the compiler is having a hard time with (in boost/archive/impl/basic_xml_grammar.hpp): template<class CharType> class basic_xml_grammar { private: typedef std::basic_string<CharType> StringType; public: struct return_values { StringType object_name; }; }; The compiler complains that StringType, as used in the definition of object_name, is inaccesible. I'm no C++ guru, but I understand the construct is legal according to DR45. What puzzles me is that Compaq C++ is seemingly the only compiler failing on this, when the DR45 was approved well after the standard (in 2001, I think.) Anyway, I propose to make basic_xml_grammar::StringType public, as it can really do no harm and Compaq C++ will welcome it. Any objection? Do I commit the change? If I understand the problem right, dispatched implementation of push_front on tuples refers boost::fusion::meta::push_front, which is forward declared but never defined. Is it by design or was it left to add implementation later? Another thing you might want to check (not directly related to this) is that tuple iterator does not define iterator category, that was required by some mpl algorithms. I've got here GCC 3.4 (under Linux FC3) and boost 1.32 taken from boost CVS. [serialization] new STATIC_ASSERTION_FAILURE

I've just updated my Boost tree, and now get this: /space/NM/boost/boost/serialization/type_info_implementation.hpp:48: error: incomplete type `boost::STATIC_ASSERTION_FAILURE<false>' does not have member `value' The check in type_info_implementation.hpp was introduced in revision 1.4 of that file. I should also note that log message is "invoke auto-link only when necessary", which is clearly not accurate, given that the STATIC_ASSERT does not have anything to do with auto-linking. There's no comment why the STATIC_ASSERTION is there. So, what's that? If I add #include <boost/serialization/extended_type_info_typeid_fwd.hpp> to the top of the file (to grab definition of BOOST_SERIALIZATION_DEFAULT_TYPE_INFO), things start to look better, but I get: /space/NM/boost/boost/archive/detail/iserializer.hpp:113: error: incomplete type 'boost::serialization::extended_type_info_typeid<const boost::scoped_ptr<lvk::nm_model::runtime::BlockFormula::data> >' cannot be used to name a scope When I change the include to be: #include <boost/serialization/extended_type_info_typeid.hpp> I get this: /space/NM/boost/boost/archive/basic_archive.hpp:21:2: #error "no serialization headers my precede anyarchive headers" I don't understand this error. What if I have a header file MyClass.hpp that declares a serialize function. So, I might need to include <serialization/base_object.hpp>. I need to do that in the header, I believe. Now if I include archive headers in a .cpp file, will that trigger an error? Or the above rule has some exceptions? Ok, now to base_object.hpp. I get: /space/NM/boost/boost/serialization/base_object.hpp:75: error: parse error before `;' token because the header uses 'type_info_implementation' without including the appropriate header. So, to summarize: 1. Could the type_info_implementation.hpp header be fixed either by including #include <boost/serialization/extended_type_info_typeid.hpp> or in some other way. 2. Could base_object.hpp be fixed either by including the appropriate header, or in some other way. 3. What are the exact rules about relative order of serialization/ and archive/ includes? - Volodya

The program_options *dll tests all fail on gcc-3.3-darwin (Dirxion results), because of this error building the library: /usr/bin/libtool: for architecture: cputype (16777234) cpusubtype (0) file: -lSystem is not an object file (not allowed in a library) See http://tinyurl.com/dagol It looks like toolset misconfiguration. [filesystem] i18n branch committed to CVS

CVS now contains a branch "i18n" of the filesystem directories: * Class templates basic_path, basic_directory_iterator, etc, support narrow, wide, and user-defined path types. Typedefs path, directory_iterator, etc, are provided, so most existing code continues to work. * Name checking has been moved out of class basic_path, so it no longer gets in the way of those not using the name checking facility. Deprecated versions of various functions are provided to preserve existing code. * The need to explicitly identify native format paths via special constructors has been eliminated, simplifying casual use of the library. Deprecated versions of those constructors are provided to preserve existing code. More detailed documentation is available in the i18n CVS branch at <boost-root>/libs/filesystem/doc/i18n.html. Most of the other documentation has also been updated to reflect the changes. Current issues with the i18n branch include: * Testing has been limited to Intel 8.1, Metrowerks 9.3, and Microsoft 7.1 on Windows, and GCC 3.3 on Mac OS X. How much effort to put into broken compilers is going to be a real issue - internationalization may have to be disabled, and that is a lot of work. * Some tests (particularly in operations_test.cpp) are commented out. Minor issues need to be resolved and the tests reactivated. * Two or three of the less important doc files haven't been updated yet. * The convenience header and source code hasn't been converted yet. * The UTF-8 conversion facet header and source is duplicated. Need to identify and fix the issues that prevented the boost/detail version from being used. * The "// TODO" notes in the code need to be revisited, issues fixed, and the notes eliminated. * Testing on Windows 9X would be helpful, and issues fixed or documented. * Backed up issues and patches from the mailing list need to be addressed. * Windows tests need to be run on a FAT filesystem to see what issues arise. All of the Windows analysis and design effort so far has gone into NTFS, so there may be critical problems with filesystems that only support narrow paths. * The POSIX wpath implementation assumes that UTF-8 is always the operating system's preferred external path encoding. If any Boost users are concerned about other encodings, please let me know. * A timing test is needed, particularly for directory iteration. There is concern over excessive copying by basic_path conversion functions, so need to test if speed is a real problem in a realistic application. Any comments would be appreciated (but please look at the docs first, as a lot of effort went into rationale and trying to answer anticipated questions). My plan is to pause development for a while, both to allow time for comments to be made, and also so I can attack a backlog of non-Boost work that has been building up. --Beman

I used 'pof' (plain old functional, inspired by 'pod') in the naming to refer to what was previously called "function types".
