Nice idea. Unfortunately RPC's ( including Java RMI ) don't scale. Thats why CORBA and J2EE were created. Simple RPC mechanisms like this inevitably end up being extended piece by piece until you have reproduced most of the CORBA functionality. Therefore IMHO I don't think it is a good idea for boost. /ikh

(sorry if I got off base)- the question relevant to boost \ iostreams was this- Given a device which has different line termination than \n, how do you handle it in such a way that allows for that device to be able to interpret std::endl so it works as the user would expect. (and so the code you write using the sink makes sense to the user) I happen to be using win32's outputdebugstring, but the same issue applies for "printing" to a windows edit control. The same issue might also apply to a daisy wheel printer. And, personally, I think boost should support daisy wheel printers (grin)....

Maybe if you post a bit of code, which > represents what you are trying to accomplish, I can help... I'm using MS Visual C++ 6.0. This is what I'm doing: CBase { ... }; CDerived : public CBase { ... }; CSomething { public: CSomething( const CBase& base ) : m_Base( base ) {} CSomething& operator=( const CSomething& rhs ) { if ( typeid( m_Base ) != typeid( rhs.m_Base ) ) // This never fails. { throw exception(); } } private: CBase& m_Base; }; When I look at the type_info object's name(), it always returns "CBase", even if it's actually a CDerived object. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Select overload revisited
by Daniel James 01 Mar '05

01 Mar '05

I was thinking about the overload resolution functions suggested a while back by Arturo Cuebas[1] and had no idea why the compiler needs to be told the number of parameters in the first place. So I took his code and removed the numbers from functions, and it worked (in gcc). I guess that it didn't work for him because of his compiler. Well, it almost worked. Sometimes there is more than the one function that fits the template parameters. So I kept the numbered overloads to be able to match them. It might be possible to get these to work without the number of parameters by making the compiler prefer overloads for functions with less parameters. I've attached a demo. Added "restore" member functions to ios_state

See "BOOST_ROOT/boost/io/ios_state.hpp," CVS version 1.3, and "BOOST_ROOT/libs/io/doc/ios_state.html," CVS version 1.7, if they uploaded OK. (I had a temporary[?] wait on my own lock.) -- Daryle Walker Mac, Internet, and Video Game Junkie darylew AT hotmail DOT com

build boost1_32_0 lib on solaris 9.
by JIM WANG, BLOOMBERG/ SKILLMAN 01 Mar '05

01 Mar '05

Hi all, i am building build libraries for version 1_32_0 on solaris 9 but running into many errors. For example, there are similar errors like in compiling serialization/build/../src/xml_wgrammar.cpp:14: #error "wide char i/o not supported on this platform" The command i used is: bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" --with-python-root=/usr/local/Python2.3.2 install Are there any detailed procedures for build on solaris 9? Thanks

Is there any way to get typeid() to return the derived class name?
by Chris Just 01 Mar '05

01 Mar '05

Hi, I've been looking through the boost library and I haven't been able to find anything that works like typeid() that returns the exact (i.e. derived) class name instead of just the base class. I want to compare two derived classes to make sure that they are of the same class, but typeid() only returns the name of the base class. If there is a boost function that does this, or if someone has a way of doing it could you please point me in the right direction? Thanks, Chris Just __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? [mpl] sequence details
by Tobias Schwinger 01 Mar '05

01 Mar '05

Hi, What is the best way to convert the result of a mutating mpl intrinsic metafunction (such as 'mpl::push_back', for example) to numbered form ('vectorN<a1,a2,..>') ? I tried using the type-member (which only works on some compilers - not with GCC for example) and figure 'copy' could probably do the trick (but is a quite complex operation) so there might be a better recipe for this. In a library I'm currently working on, I use a decorator pattern to make a class model of a sequence it holds (i.e. give it a tag type member and specialize *_impl with delegate semantics). After applying the delegate metafunction I need the sequence in a form I can match with partial specialization. Thanks for your help, Tobias

[numeric/conversion] doc's example not up-to-date
by Samuel Krempp 01 Mar '05

01 Mar '05

Is the documentation for numeric/conversion finalized yet ? It seems that at least the code sample in numeric/conversion/doc/numeric_cast.html hasn't been kept up-to-date. This sample 1/ includes inexistent header 2/ uses boost::bad_numeric_cast instead of boost::numeric::bad_numeric_conversion and same for the other exception classes and most of all : 3/ // This works, because unsigned integral types cannot cause overflow. unsigned char c=numeric_cast<unsigned char>(l); But this line does raise an overflow exception (as it should, I guess). I guess the comment was about unsigned types implementing modulo-arithmetics, but in the end does numeric_cast check for unsigned overflows, or not ?? -- Samuel
