OS X Link Problems
by Alan 08 Jan '05

I built boost thus: bjam "-sTOOLS=darwin" -sBUILD="debug release <runtime-link>static/dynamic" After hacking around the xml_grammar.cpp problems, I get the link errors where the following functions cannot be found. (Removed a lot of extra stuff to try and display only the library and missing function. If you'd like to see all 183 lines that is possible.) I'm wondering if some test functions that are not meant to be in the library are referenced by something included in the library. darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_prg_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/debug/runtime-link-static/shared-linkable-true/libboost_prg_exec_monitor-sd-1_32.dylib ld: Undefined symbols: cpp_main(int, char**) darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_prg_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/debug/shared-linkable-true/libboost_prg_exec_monitor-d-1_32.dylib ld: Undefined symbols: cpp_main(int, char**) darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_prg_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/debug/shared-linkable-true/libboost_prg_exec_monitor-d-1_32.dylib ld: Undefined symbols: cpp_main(int, char**) darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_prg_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/release/runtime-link-static/shared-linkable-true/libboost_prg_exec_monitor-s-1_32.dylibld: Undefined symbols:cpp_main(int, char**) darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_prg_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/release/shared-linkable-true/libboost_prg_exec_monitor-1_32.dylib ld: Undefined symbols: cpp_main(int, char**) darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_test_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/debug/runtime-link-static/shared-linkable-true/libboost_test_exec_monitor-sd-1_32.dylibld: Undefined symbols:test_main(int, char**) darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_test_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/debug/shared-linkable-true/libboost_test_exec_monitor-d-1_32.dylibld: Undefined symbols:test_main(int, char**) darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_test_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/release/shared-linkable-true/libboost_test_exec_monitor-1_32.dylibld: Undefined symbols:test_main(int, char**) darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_unit_test_framework.dylib/darwin/debug/runtime-link-static/shared-linkable-true/libboost_unit_test_framework-sd-1_32.dylibld: Undefined symbols:init_unit_test_suite(int, char**) -- Alan Gutierrez - alan(a)engrm.com

Any interest in a library for supporting program reuse?
by christopher diggins 08 Jan '05

Hi all, the compulsive coder here again, I've just written in a working prototype of a library for writing C++ programs which can be treated in C++ code like Unix filters, i.e. redirected to and from streams, and other programs. For instance: fstream f("c:\\tmp.txt"); stringstream s; HelloWorldProgram() > f > UpperCaseProgram() > s; Is there any interest in this kind of library, for boost? I am using it for writing test and demonstration programs of libraries, but I think it has a lot of other uses. The source code and a more detailed explanation is at http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/program-objects.asp Christopher Diggins http://www.cdiggins.com http://www.heron-language.com

Try: > bind(Base::ReturnAString); > or: > bind(&Base::ReturnAString,this); > [Brian Braatz] THANK YOU BOTH REECE AND DANIEL :) (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) That fixed it. What is STRANGE is that "sometimes" bind(Base::ReturnAString) works ironically, I have about 40 calls that use that syntax that work just fine. I noticed in the docs, when you have a inline functor, the docs use > bind(Base::ReturnAString); But when you have something that was not inline (??) you use: > bind(&Base::ReturnAString); I was never clear on when you and when you do NOT use the "&" with the bind() syntax..... I will convert everything in my "real code" to using the & always. Question: Does anyone know when you should and should not use the & in a bind call? Or is this is compile time checking hole that exists due to the mechanisms bind relies upon? OR Am I a complete idiot? (I find it important to always hold open this option as a possibility in everything)

Bizarre Lambda bind() problem with Base class types

With the following code, If you UNCOMMENT the "// public : Base" line, you get compiler errors (????) I have tested this with MS VC 7.1 against both 1.31 and 1.32 versions of boost with the same results. Any idea why this is happening? (full sample code I wrote is attached) using namespace boost::lambda; namespace Tests { class Base { public: std::string ReturnAString() { std::cout << "hi"; } }; class Derived // : public Base // UNCOMMENT ME to see the errors { public: void Func() { bind(Base::ReturnAString,_1); } }; }; // namespace Tests My Compiler errors are this: ------ Build started: Project: Test_LambdaProblem, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------ Compiling... thread lib patch
by François Dumont 08 Jan '05

08 Jan '05

Using MSVC6, STLport 5.0 beta, february 2003 SDK under Windows XP I failed to build thread library because of a missing include. In read_write_mutex.cpp, tchar.h contains _sntprintf macro definition but not the functions definition hidden behind this macro. Those are in stdio.h. Maybe this file was included in a previous version of STLport but it is not anymore. I am also surprised that those files are included if BOOST_HAS_WINTHREADS is defined and symbos coming from them are used if WINVER is defined. Isn't there a little inconsistency? Bests

[gui] Shoulders of Giants
by Alan Gutierrez 08 Jan '05

I'd like to take some time and study what has gone before. If I think of a list of successful windowing libraries the following come to mind. http://www.torjo.com/win32gui/ http://www.wxwindows.org/ http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/ http://www.tcl.tk/ http://www.trolltech.com/ http://developer.apple.com/cocoa/ I plan on having the documentation for these windowing libraries on hand, as well as the source code, where available. I've advocated the use of a CSS layout component to render the View-Controller aspect in fashion that is cross-platform and i18n. This is my pet, so I'm interested in reading through existing web browser work. http://mozilla.org/ http://www.konqueror.org/features/browser.php http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/webcore/ https://xhtmlrenderer.dev.java.net/ I'm sharing these thoughts to see if anyone has must see, must consider projects to suggest. Maybe by looking at these lists someone can tell me if I'm totally missing a concept. -- Alan Gutierrez - alan(a)engrm.com

Property
by Jason Hise 07 Jan '05

The following is a class to emulate C# properties using C++: www.ezequal.com/chaos/libs/property.h example code: template < typename T > class Coord { private: T x, y; T get_X ( ) const { return x; } T get_Y ( ) const { return y; } void set_X ( const T & value ) { x = value; } void set_Y ( const T & value ) { y = value; } public: utils::GetSetProperty < Coord < T >, T > X; utils::GetSetProperty < Coord < T >, T > Y; Coord ( ) : X ( this, get_X, set_X ), Y ( this, get_X, set_X ) { } Coord ( T X, T Y ) : X ( this, get_X, set_X ), Y ( this, get_X, set_X ) { this->X = X; this->Y = Y; } }; The compiler appears to optimize out any calls between the property's use and the get/set functions. Any thoughts or suggestions for improvement? -Jason

program objects and iostreams filters
by christopher diggins 07 Jan '05

There has been some questions posed to me as to the difference between Jonathan's iostreams library filter concept ( http://home.comcast.net/~jturkanis/iostreams/libs/iostreams/doc/ ). The iostreams library and it is the correct choice if you are writing a relatively simple filter, but writing an even more sophisticated program as an iostreams filter, is non-trivial. For instance the following code would require some significant rewriting in order to make it a single filter object. public Avg : Program { virtual void Main() { double dSum = 0; int nCnt = 0; while (!cin.eof()) { double d; std::cin >> d; dSum += d; } std::cout << dSum << std::endl; } } This is primarily because a filter involves a series of calls to a single function such as put or get (see: http://home.comcast.net/~jturkanis/iostreams/libs/iostreams/doc/tutorial.ht… ) . The point of the Program class is that I want to be able to write a C++ programs as naturally as possible, and still redirect it, or chain them together simply. The above program can be redirected to a stream, or to another file by simply writing: Avg() > fstream("c:\\tmp.txt"); Just so I am clear. I am not at all suggesting that what I propose is replacement for any part of the iostream library. It is designed as an alternative to using main(). [Boost-bugs] [ boost-Support Requests-1098070 ] Spirit does not compile on aCC
by SourceForge.net 07 Jan '05

Support Requests item #1098070, was opened at 2005-01-07 10:46 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=207586&aid=1098070&group_… Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Spirit does not compile on aCC Initial Comment: I am really interested in using boost, and especially spirit, for a project on HP-UX, but it seems the aCC compiler has got some issues with the template resolutions, even though it is a decent compiler, and very fast, compared to gcc at least. I tried to compile some of the spirit tests and here are the kind of errors I get: >aCC -AA -I../../boost_1_32_0/ +W823 chset_tests.cpp Error 619: "../../boost_1_32_0/boost/spirit/core/primitives/primitives.hpp", line 40 # The definition of template result<boost::spirit::anychar_parser> contains typename qualification 'ScannerT::value_t', yet generation of specialization struct result<boost::spirit::anychar_parser> implies that 'ScannerT' is 'tentative struct anychar_parser', which does not contain a type named 'value_t'. typename parser_result<self_t, ScannerT>::type ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Error 617: "../../boost_1_32_0/boost/spirit/core/primitives/primitives.hpp", line 40 # The definition of template result<int> contains typename qualification 'ScannerT::value_t', yet generation of specialization struct result<int> implies that 'ScannerT' is 'int', which is not a class type. typename parser_result<self_t, ScannerT>::type ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ It seems it does not use the proper parameters. note that aCC does not have issues usually with template, even when using several level of nesting or specialisations. any kind of help towards resolution of this issue would be greatly appreciated, thanks, maudouy(a)amadeus.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=207586&aid=1098070&group_… ------------------------------------------------------- The SF.Net email is sponsored by: Beat the post-holiday blues Get a FREE limited edition SourceForge.net t-shirt from ThinkGeek.
